KEY GAME INFORMATION
PORTLAND: LAST SEASON: 53-29, lost 4-0 to Golden State in the Western Conference finals.
COACH: Terry Stotts (eighth season with Trail Blazers, 325-249; 12th season overall, 440-417).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Damian Lillard (25.8 ppg), G CJ McCollum (21.0), F Rodney Hood (11.2), F Zach Collins (8.6), C Hassan Whiteside (12.3 with Miami).
KEY LOSSES: F Al-Farouq Aminu, F Evan Turner, F Maurice Harkless, C Meyers Leonard.
KEY ADDITIONS: Whiteside, C Pau Gasol, F Anthony Tolliver, G Kent Bazemore.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: The Blazers will count on Whiteside at center while Jusuf Nurkic recovers from a broken leg he suffered during a game in March. Nurkic probably won't return until January, at the earliest. The Blazers added some insurance at the position by signing Pau Gasol, who is also making his way back from surgery. Portland will look to Zach Collins to take the next step in his third season in the league. Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum form one of the best backcourt duos in the league.
OUTLOOK: In the loaded Western Conference, the revamped Trail Blazers, with a total of seven new players, will have to come together sooner rather than later. A key will be how Whiteside gels with the rest of the team. The 7-footer was acquired in a trade with the Miami, where his production fell off last season after three strong seasons. The Blazers will again emphasize defensive improvement going into the season, something Stotts has routinely preached each fall camp. Lillard signed a supermax extension in the offseason, and appears to be a Blazer for the long haul. Expectations are high for Portland after making the Western Conference finals last season, and players say they're not going to be satisfied with simply making the playoffs, the goal now is to go deep into the postseason.
INDIANA: LAST SEASON: 48-34, lost in first round.
COACH: Nate McMillan (fourth season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Malcolm Brogdon (15.6 ppg), G Jeremy Lamb (15.3 ppg), F Domantas Sabonis (14.1 ppg), F T.J. Warren (18.0 ppg), C Myles Turner (13.3)
KEY LOSSES: F Thaddeus Young, F Bojan Bogdanovic, G Darren Collison, G Cory Joseph, G Tyreke Evans
KEY ADDITIONS: Brogdon, Lamb, Warren, G T.J. McConnell, F Justin Holiday
PLAYERS TO WATCH: The big question heading into this season is when will two-time All-Star Victor Oladipo return from a ruptured quad tendon in his right knee? He's not expected back until at least December and when he does start playing, it's unclear how long it will take him to return to form. Until then, this will be Turner's team and everyone will be watching how this new starting lineup plays together. Indiana expects Brogdon to play like the $85 million man while Sabonis moves from a valuable backup role into the starting lineup for the first time. Sabonis and Turner being paired together give the Pacers a more traditional two big-man look.
OUTLOOK: The Pacers know it will take time for all the new faces to get acclimated in sync, and they expect some rough patches early. But the offseason moves should give Indiana more scoring punch and better balance offensively. Defensively, it will be interesting to see how Sabonis or Turner defends the perimeter. But if the Pacers have a solid start and Oladipo is back to full strength before the All-Star break, they could become a surprise contender in the Eastern Conference.
PREVIEW
Pacers look to extend Blazers' road struggles

The Indiana Pacers answered their worst loss in 33 years with their largest margin of victory of the season.

Now the Pacers aim to record their fourth win in five outings and snap a five-game losing skid in the series with the Portland Trail Blazers on Thursday when the clubs meet in Indianapolis.

All-Star forward Domantas Sabonis helped Indiana recover following a 127-81 shellacking at Toronto on Sunday, recording 21 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists two nights later in a 119-80 romp over Charlotte.

"From the first possession, we just made them feel us (defensively)," Sabonis said via FOX Sports Indiana. "We were on every catch pursuing them and that kind of set the tone for everybody else then the second unit followed. It just went smoothly."

Sabonis, whose father Arvydas played for the Trail Blazers, registered his second career triple-double with 27 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists in the Pacers' 139-129 setback in Portland on Jan. 26. The younger Sabonis has since notched two more triple-doubles before nearly collecting his fifth on Tuesday.

Indiana, which had six players post double-digit point totals, shot 57.0 percent from the floor and led the Hornets by as many as 43 points in the fourth quarter to put the rout by the Raptors in its rear-view mirror.

"I didn't see the Toronto game coming, where we never really established ourselves," Pacers coach Nate McMillan said. "I really felt that we were going to go up there and win that game. I felt we could beat that team, but they totally smacked us.

"But I loved our response (Tuesday). We were all about business and we put together a really solid 48-minute game and I thought we were connected out there at both ends of the floor and it looked like they were having some fun but without trying to embarrass anyone."

The Trail Blazers haven't been having much fun on the road, losing four straight away from the Rose City and 20 of 30 on the season entering the opener of a three-game trek on Thursday.

Portland fell for the fourth time in its last five outings overall with a 118-106 setback to Boston on Tuesday.

"It's our reality, so we've got to figure out how to get as many wins as possible, starting in Indiana and progressing forward," guard CJ McCollum said.

McCollum has stepped up in the absence of injured All-Star Damian Lillard (groin), averaging 32.0 points, 10.7 assists and 6.3 rebounds in his last three games -- including 28, 10 and four against the Celtics.

The 28-year-old McCollum had 28 points in the previous encounter with the Pacers while Hassan Whiteside had 21 and 14 rebounds. Whiteside had 18 and 19, respectively, versus Boston for his seventh straight double-double.

Lillard's availability for the team's three-game road trip has yet to be decided, according to coach Terry Stotts. He is not expected to play Thursday.

"At this point, I'm not sure. I think we're discussing that," Stotts said of the 29-year-old Lillard, who averages team-best totals in points (29.5) and assists (7.9).
