KEY GAME INFORMATION
LA LAKERS: GUARDS: Coach Mike Brown will reportedly turn the offensive gameplan over to STEVE NASH, but it's tough to picture a smooth transition after so many years of iso-heavy play in L.A. Don't be surprised if Nash has a tough adjustment . . . KOBE BRYANT will also have to learn to play with the ball out of his hands more often. He still figures to force some hold-and-wait basketball when he can . . . STEVE BLAKE will be in the old Derek Fisher role, coming off the bench to shoot corner threes . . . CHRIS DUHON and DARIUS MORRIS will battle for that No. 3 point guard spot . . . JODIE MEEKS will back up Bryant and provide some long-range shooting off the bench . . . The young guys, ANDREW GOUDELOCK and second-rounder DARIUS JOHNSON-ODOM, will bounce between the bench and the D-League. FORWARDS: If L.A. redesigns their offense to fit Nash, PAU GASOL should thrive. He's adjusted his game to fit with Kobe's iso play, but Gasol can make the passes and cuts to create quick buckets in a Euro-style offense . . . METTA WORLD PEACE looked done early last season but rebounded for a solid second half. He's a distant fifth option on offense, but can still defend . . . ANTAWN JAMISON will likely fill a sixth-man role. His skill set is too narrow to play a lot of minutes with the starters . . . JORDAN HILL is in the rotation. He did a nice job rebounding and clearing out space last year . . . DEVIN EBANKS figures to be bumped out of the rotation by Jamison. CENTERS: DWIGHT HOWARD's back remains a bit of a concern, and it wouldn't be a shock to see him sit out a handful of regular season games. But when he plays, he'll put up the same kind of monster production that he had in Orlando . . . ROBERT SACRE will be lucky to make the roster.
INDIANA: GUARDS: The Pacers went 7-2 during the regular season and won a playoff series with GEORGE HILL in the starting five. He averaged 13.9 PPG and 5.3 APG in those regular season starts . . . PAUL GEORGE is a defensive stopper who is making strides on the offensive end. If he can find the touches, his scoring average will rise . . . D.J. AUGUSTIN has a skill set similar to Hill's. Maybe he'll push him for minutes later in the year, but more likely he'll shoot corner threes off the bench . . . GERALD GREEN is another athlete for their second unit . . . LANCE STEPHENSON has a chance for a bigger role, but he's been atrocious to this point of his career. FORWARDS: DANNY GRANGER's touches dropped last season, but his shot selection improved as last year went on. He'll continue to be a borderline All-Star . . . DAVID WEST's knee should be fully recovered from his torn ACL in late 2010-11. He was their best player in the postseason and should be a star this season with his ability to knock down shots . . . TYLER HANSBROUGH looks like he's settling in as a career second unit player. His lack of athleticism really limits his upside . . . JEFF PENDERGRAPH may or may not hold on to a roster spot in a 12th-man role. CENTERS: They're paying ROY HIBBERT like a franchise player, and he has the ability to control both ends of the court. The question is whether they'll now play him 30-plus minutes, or continue to use him as more of a part-time player . . . IAN MAHINMI should step in as a decent backup center . . . Rookie MILES PLUMLEE was a part-time player at Duke and is highly unlikely to contribute in his first season.

*Lakers-Pacers Preview* =======================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

Los Angeles (34-32) at Indiana (40-24), 7:00 p.m. EDT

The Los Angeles Lakers have looked much more promising in recent weeks as they've made a push for the playoffs. Amid all the challenges they have faced in a tumultuous season, though, the latest might be the most difficult yet.

After a stunning injury to Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles will play its first game without its superstar guard Friday night when they visit the Indiana Pacers.

Bryant is out indefinitely with a severely sprained left ankle suffered on a missed game-tying shot in the closing seconds of a 96-92 loss to Atlanta on Wednesday. He landed on Dahntay Jones' foot and there is no timetable for his return.

The Lakers have 16 games remaining.

"I'll just do what I have to do," said Bryant, among the league leaders with 27.5 points per game.

Jones wasn't called for a foul on the play, which Bryant felt was dirty because Jones slid under him.

"I can't get my mind past the fact that I have to wait a year to get revenge," he said, as Los Angeles won't face Atlanta again until next season. "It's just a very, very dangerous play, especially when I'm fading away."

The Lakers (34-32) have recently found their stride in a season marked by lack of chemistry, occasional discord and injury, winning four straight and 17 of 23 prior to Wednesday. They own a half-game lead over the Jazz for eighth place in the Western Conference.

Jodie Meeks would likely figure to start in place of Bryant. Meeks is averaging 8.0 points in 19.1 minutes per game.

With Bryant out, the Lakers will almost certainly lean more heavily on center Dwight Howard, who has finally returned to form with 21.8 points and 16.2 rebounds over his last five contests. He averaged 15.9 points and 12.1 boards in his first 55 games.

Indiana center Roy Hibbert, like Howard, has been surging lately after some inconsistent play. Hibbert has scored 16.8 points per game while shooting 56.3 percent in his last six, compared to 10.0 and 42.0 in the previous 57.

He scored a season-high 27 with 12 rebounds in a 107-91 home win over Minnesota on Wednesday.

"You could see in his body language, he's just playing more confident," coach Frank Vogel told the team's official website. "We said all along that it was going to be a process and that he would snap out of it. He's playing well, not just tonight, but over the last few weeks."

The Pacers (40-24) need Hibbert to continue his strong production with Danny Granger out at least two more games due to knee soreness. Granger, who will have the knee re-evaluated at the end of the week, has missed all but five games and sat out four straight since that brief five-game return.

Granger didn't play in the teams' first meeting, a 79-77 Pacers road win Nov. 27. Bryant had 40 points and 10 rebounds, but the Lakers shot 31.9 percent. George Hill led Indiana with 19 points and David West added 16, 10 boards, eight assists and two blocks.

The Lakers have won three of the teams' last four matchups in Indianapolis, but that was with Bryant averaging 30.0 points in those contests.
