KEY GAME INFORMATION
INDIANA: LAST SEASON: 48-34, lost in first round.
COACH: Nate McMillan (fourth season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Malcolm Brogdon (15.6 ppg), G Jeremy Lamb (15.3 ppg), F Domantas Sabonis (14.1 ppg), F T.J. Warren (18.0 ppg), C Myles Turner (13.3)
KEY LOSSES: F Thaddeus Young, F Bojan Bogdanovic, G Darren Collison, G Cory Joseph, G Tyreke Evans
KEY ADDITIONS: Brogdon, Lamb, Warren, G T.J. McConnell, F Justin Holiday
PLAYERS TO WATCH: The big question heading into this season is when will two-time All-Star Victor Oladipo return from a ruptured quad tendon in his right knee? He's not expected back until at least December and when he does start playing, it's unclear how long it will take him to return to form. Until then, this will be Turner's team and everyone will be watching how this new starting lineup plays together. Indiana expects Brogdon to play like the $85 million man while Sabonis moves from a valuable backup role into the starting lineup for the first time. Sabonis and Turner being paired together give the Pacers a more traditional two big-man look.
OUTLOOK: The Pacers know it will take time for all the new faces to get acclimated in sync, and they expect some rough patches early. But the offseason moves should give Indiana more scoring punch and better balance offensively. Defensively, it will be interesting to see how Sabonis or Turner defends the perimeter. But if the Pacers have a solid start and Oladipo is back to full strength before the All-Star break, they could become a surprise contender in the Eastern Conference.
HOUSTON: LAST SEASON: 53-29, lost 4-2 to Golden State in Western Conference semifinals.
COACH: Mike D'Antoni (fourth season with Rockets, 173-73; 16th season overall, 628-499).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Russell Westbrook (22.9 ppg with Oklahoma City), G James Harden (36.1), F Eric Gordon (16.2), F P.J. Tucker (7.3), C Clint Capela (12.0).
KEY LOSSES: G Chris Paul, G Iman Shumpert, C Kenneth Faried
KEY ADDITIONS: Westbrook, C Tyson Chandler, F Thabo Sefolosha, F Ryan Anderson, F Ben McLemore.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: All eyes will be on Westbrook and Harden as the Rockets try to prove that these two ball-dominant guards can coexist after Houston sent Paul to Oklahoma City in exchange for Westbrook. Harden and Westbrook are longtime friends and played together in Oklahoma City at the beginning of Harden's career when he was the sixth man for the Thunder and insist that things will work out because they want them to. But things have changed a lot since their Oklahoma City days and it will be interesting to see how Westbrook will adjust to playing a supporting role to Harden after being the face of the Thunder for years.
OUTLOOK: The addition of Westbrook to this team starring Harden gives the Rockets two of the league's most dynamic scorers and playmakers a year after Houston lost to Golden State in the Western Conference semifinals. If the pairing of is successful it could help the Rockets become an offensive juggernaut in the stacked Western Conference. While Harden and Westbrook will drive Houston's success, players like Eric Gordon and center Clint Capela will have to continue to improve if the Rockets hope to finally get over the hump and compete for their first title since winning back-to-back championships in 1994-95.
PREVIEW
Streaking Pacers to test Rockets' improving defense

The Rockets had talked up their defensive improvement for more than a week prior to Wednesday but, considering the quality of their previous opponents, that chatter rang hollow.

Following their gritty 102-93 win against the Los Angeles Clippers, the Rockets collectively had reason to puff their chests.

The Clippers were by far the toughest foe during the Rockets' recent stretch of defensive advancement. After earning their first win against a team with a winning record, Houston will try to maintain that level of defensive focus when the Indiana Pacers visit Toyota Center on Friday.

"Our communication, our rotations," Rockets guard James Harden said. "Obviously they made some big shots. Kawhi (Leonard) made some tough mid-range shots, JaMychal Green made some corner threes, but they're a good team, so you've got to live with something.

"We knew how great their bench is ... that was a big emphasis right there. Overall, we did an unbelievable job as a team."

Smothering the likes of the Grizzlies, Bulls and Pelicans doesn't quite earn the same recognition as making things difficult for Leonard and Clippers reserve guard Lou Williams. That duo combined for 46 points on 18-of-46 shooting. The Clippers shot just 38.8 percent overall, marking the third time in four games that Houston held an opponent to sub-40 percent shooting from the floor.

When P.J. Tucker wasn't locked on Leonard, the Rockets sent multiple defenders his direction. They employed a similar tactic against Williams, who started the second half after Houston limited the Clippers to 37 points at the break -- their best defensive effort for any half this season.

After stating a need for more vigorous defensive play following their ragged start to this season, the Rockets are executing that mandate.

"We just played hard," Tucker said. "We were getting into the ball, we were making them make tough twos, trying to get them off the line and make their threes really, really tough. We boxed out pretty well. We just played hard. At the end of the day, that's what won it."

Like Houston, the Pacers required an extended stretch of games for things to materialize, with their quality depth coming to the forefront during their current four-game winning streak.

Four different players have scored in double figures off the bench during the streak: Doug McDermott, T.J. McConnell, Justin Holiday and rookie Goga Bitadze. Contributions from up and down the roster have helped to offset ankle injuries to Myles Turner and Jeremy Lamb, who both missed Tuesday's 111-85 home win against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

"Everyone has done a great job of sharing the ball," McConnell said. "It gives us more confidence as a team to know that we'll share the ball, and everyone is looking to score and can score.

"I think (coach) Nate (McMillan) is doing a great job with the subs. We don't have any guys with egos here that are complaining about minutes and how they're being used. That's great for our locker room and the way we want to do things here. It speaks volumes about the people we have here."
