KEY GAME INFORMATION
BROOKLYN: GUARDS: Even after Paul Pierce came to Brooklyn, JOE JOHNSON remained the clear-cut No. 1 option in Brooklyn. Their offense figures to feature Johnson backing down defenders frequently again this year . . . DERON WILLIAMS seems to be deteriorating rapidly, struggling to stay healthy and losing confidence . . . JARRETT JACK figures to take Shaun Livingston's old role, playing alongside Williams often to take ball-handling duties off his plate . . . ALAN ANDERSON will see time at both wing spots as a defensive specialist who shoots some corner threes . . . SERGEY KARASEV has some long-term upside, but will do little this year . . . MARQUIS TEAGUE figures to have the edge on MARKEL BROWN for the No. 3 PG job. FORWARDS: With Paul Pierce gone, MIRZA TELETOVIC has a chance to take on a bigger role. He held his own defensively last year and provides another deep threat to space the floor . . . There's no telling what, if anything, they'll get out of ANDREI KIRILENKO this season. He seems to be at a point in his career when he's just not going to be able to stay healthy . . . BOJAN BOGDANOVIC should give Brooklyn some additional offensive firepower off the bench. He'll likely be a regular in the rotation by midseason . . . KEVIN GARNETT figures to play a bit more at the 4 alongside Brook Lopez, but there's pretty much no gas left in the tank for this 38-year-old player . . . Second-round pick CORY JEFFERSON is likely ticketed for the D-League. CENTERS: The Nets desperately need a healthy BROOK LOPEZ if they're going to win the Atlantic Division, but they'll have to monitor his minutes closely after another season lost to injury . . . With Lopez healthy, MASON PLUMLEE will resume his natural role as an energy guy off the bench.
HOUSTON: GUARDS: The postseason was a different story for JAMES HARDEN, but he was a dominant all-around performer during the past two regular seasons. He'll do the bulk of the ball-handling for the up-tempo Rockets . . . After looking for an upgrade during the offseason, it's back to PATRICK BEVERLEY at the point. He's the No. 4 or 5 option on offense, but his defense will keep him on the floor . . . There's little backcourt depth, so rookie NICK JOHNSON has a shot at the rotation. He's NBA-ready as a defender, but his offensive game is shaky . . . ISH SMITH will push for that back-up point guard job . . . ISAIAH CANAAN will have to shoot the lights out early to get a look in the rotation . . . FRANCISCO GARCIA is still here as a 3-and-D option. FORWARDS: TREVOR ARIZA slides into Chandler Parsons' old role, providing defense and three-point shooting. He has a chance for a career-best output offensively . . . The Rockets know they need an upgrade over TERRENCE JONES, but they struck out during the offseason. He's a hustle guy, but he's too much of a defensive liability at the 4-spot . . . After disappearing last season, DONATAS MOTIEJUNAS has a chance to play himself into a thin frontcourt rotation. He's a potential 7-foot floor spacer . . . JEFF ADRIEN will be a "little things" guy in the second unit . . . They wanted to leave CLINT CAPELA overseas, but he'll be in Houston. He might be the future at the 4-spot, but he's years away . . . KOSTAS PAPANIKOLAOU has potential as a versatile bench option. CENTERS: DWIGHT HOWARD looked healthy again and was, at times, dominant. His game still has obvious flaws, namely free-throw shooting and an inability to step away from the basket, but there's no reason he can't flirt with 20-10 nightly while being among the league leaders in blocks . . . Ex-Rocket JOEY DORSEY returns after a strong stint in Spain. He'll bring some muscle (and six fouls) behind Howard.

*Nets-Rockets Preview* ======================

Brooklyn (23-32) at Houston (39-18), 8:00 p.m. EDT

Houston Rockets star James Harden managed to play through some immense pain his last time out.

The NBA's leading scorer will be a game-time decision when the Rockets look for a fourth straight win Friday night against the visiting Brooklyn Nets.

Harden scored 21 points on 4-of-13 shooting in Wednesday's 110-105 win over the Los Angeles Clippers. He twisted his right ankle late in the game, but remained in as he finished with 10 assists.

The superstar was limping after the game, but said he hopes he can play Friday. Coach Kevin McHale kept him out of Thursday's practice.

"He's swollen today and he's sore today but I watched him run (Wednesday) and I was like OK, he's got enough gait If you can't run, you can't play," McHale said. "We'll see tomorrow, I'll see how he feels."

Rockets guard Patrick Beverley is also uncertain after missing two straight games with flu-like symptoms. He was limited Thursday.

"Pat feels better, he was not throwing up anymore so he's feeling better," McHale said.

McHale said his team did nothing specific to prepare for the Nets (23-32), who have dropped their last seven visits to Houston. That's in stark contrast to how the Rockets got ready for a Clippers team they had gone 0-2 against before Wednesday.

"We gotta execute our stuff, today was about us and tomorrow night is about us too," McHale said. "We gotta execute our stuff, run our defensive principles. That's how the regular season goes on.

"The Clippers was a game we really prepared hard for to try to beat the Clippers. Today we prepared to be a better Houston Rockets team."

Houston (39-18) got 30 points from Harden and 18 and 11 rebounds from Donatas Motiejunas to beat Brooklyn 113-99 on the road Jan. 12.

The Rockets had a healthy Dwight Howard and Beverley in that contest while Terrence Jones was out. Jones has been back in the starting lineup the last two games, totaling 29 points and 23 rebounds.

That first meeting featured a scuffle between Howard and Kevin Garnett, who was ejected. Neither will be in this contest since Garnett has been dealt to Minnesota.

Mason Plumlee had a career-high 24 points on 10-of-11 shooting to go with 10 rebounds in the first meeting for the Nets, though the center had his second scoreless effort of the season in Wednesday's 102-96 defeat at New Orleans.

Deron Williams remained the starter at point guard, making 4 of 14 shots for 10 points, even though Jarrett Jack returned from a two-game absence due to a sore left hamstring. Jack had 15 points in 28 minutes.

These teams employ very different styles. Houston is third in the league in average pace at 99.16 possessions per 48 minutes while Brooklyn is sixth-lowest at 94.42.

The Rockets average a league-best 33.9 3-point attempts compared to 20.5 for the Nets. Brooklyn is the league's fourth-worst 3-point shooting team at 32.1 percent.

"It's imperative to attack and make shots," coach Lionel Hollins said. "I'd like to make 3s. We're in an era where everybody's shooting 3s and we made 7 for 21 (Wednesday) so we shot the analytic average of 33 so we were good, when you look at that."
