| | | WASHINGTON: GUARDS: JOHN WALL has improved tremendously over the past two seasons. His physical skills are off the chart, and now he's significantly cut back on head-scratching mistakes . . . It appears that BRADLEY BEAL is becoming the perfect running mate for Wall in the short and the long term. He continues to develop off-the-dribble skills to go along with his shooting. His broken wrist is expected to fully heal by late November . . . ANDRE MILLER is in more of a mentor role in Washington. He's 38 and averaged less than 17 minutes per night last season . . . GLEN RICE JR. tore up Summer League, but it's unlikely the gunner will become an efficient scorer . . . GARRETT TEMPLE gives them a defense-first option off the bench, but his playing time will be minimal again. FORWARDS: PAUL PIERCE takes Trevor Ariza's spot at the 3. He'll have much more space to work in, not that he's ever needed it . . . The Wizards will likely play it safe with NENE HILARIO's minutes during the regular season again. They'll need him fresh for the playoffs, and they have enough frontcourt depth to do it . . . Back surgery is going to keep MARTELL WEBSTER out for a huge chunk of the season. He's a question mark even after he returns . . . After a lost rookie season, OTTO PORTER should be able to break into this rotation, especially with Webster out . . . KRIS HUMPHRIES will provide some rebounding and energy behind Nen' . . . It's incredible that DREW GOODEN is still employed. CENTERS: MARCIN GORTAT made beautiful pick-and-roll music with Wall last year. There's no reason that shouldn't continue. Gortat is a fringe All-Star . . . DeJUAN BLAIR can mix it up for 20 minutes per night, especially against smaller 5's. | | HOUSTON: GUARDS: The postseason was a different story for JAMES HARDEN, but he was a dominant all-around performer during the past two regular seasons. He'll do the bulk of the ball-handling for the up-tempo Rockets . . . After looking for an upgrade during the offseason, it's back to PATRICK BEVERLEY at the point. He's the No. 4 or 5 option on offense, but his defense will keep him on the floor . . . There's little backcourt depth, so rookie NICK JOHNSON has a shot at the rotation. He's NBA-ready as a defender, but his offensive game is shaky . . . ISH SMITH will push for that back-up point guard job . . . ISAIAH CANAAN will have to shoot the lights out early to get a look in the rotation . . . FRANCISCO GARCIA is still here as a 3-and-D option. FORWARDS: TREVOR ARIZA slides into Chandler Parsons' old role, providing defense and three-point shooting. He has a chance for a career-best output offensively . . . The Rockets know they need an upgrade over TERRENCE JONES, but they struck out during the offseason. He's a hustle guy, but he's too much of a defensive liability at the 4-spot . . . After disappearing last season, DONATAS MOTIEJUNAS has a chance to play himself into a thin frontcourt rotation. He's a potential 7-foot floor spacer . . . JEFF ADRIEN will be a "little things" guy in the second unit . . . They wanted to leave CLINT CAPELA overseas, but he'll be in Houston. He might be the future at the 4-spot, but he's years away . . . KOSTAS PAPANIKOLAOU has potential as a versatile bench option. CENTERS: DWIGHT HOWARD looked healthy again and was, at times, dominant. His game still has obvious flaws, namely free-throw shooting and an inability to step away from the basket, but there's no reason he can't flirt with 20-10 nightly while being among the league leaders in blocks . . . Ex-Rocket JOEY DORSEY returns after a strong stint in Spain. He'll bring some muscle (and six fouls) behind Howard. |

*Wizards-Rockets Preview* =========================
By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer
Washington (21-8) at Houston (21-7), 8:00 p.m. EDT
Back on track following a pair of losses, the Washington Wizards will have to pick up a rare win in Houston to extend their season-best road winning streak to four.
The Wizards open a tough five-game Western trip Monday night looking to win for only the fifth time in their last 25 road games against the Rockets.
Since dropping back-to-back contests for only the second time this season with home losses to Phoenix and Chicago, Washington has responded with a 102-91 victory at New York on Christmas Day followed by Saturday's 101-88 home win over Boston.
The Wizards (21-8) shot a combined 50.6 percent - including 12 of 29 from 3-point range - in those victories after posting a 41.9 mark and shooting 8 of 23 from beyond the arc in the two defeats. They've also shot 50.4 percent during their road streak.
John Wall has played better away from home of late, averaging 20.5 points and 11.5 assists while shooting 54.4 percent over his last four. Wall and the Wizards, however, haven't had much success at Toyota Center. The star point guard has averaged 16.3 points while shooting 35.9 percent over his last three at Houston (21-8).
He finished with 19 points and 14 assists in the most recent meeting Feb. 12, but missed 13 of 19 shots in a 113-112 loss that dropped Washington to 4-24 in Houston dating to Jan. 11, 1986. Wall sank two free throws in the waning moments to put the Wizards ahead in that contest before James Harden hit the winning layup with 0.7 seconds to play.
Washington may have to keep shooting the ball well to keep pace with the Rockets, who have averaged 111.0 points over their last three games. The Wizards also take on Dallas, Oklahoma City, San Antonio and New Orleans on the road swing.
"We get a chance to some of the upper echelon Western Conference teams," forward Paul Pierce said. "It will be a great measuring stick of where we are. We know we're one of the upper-echelon teams in the East."
The Rockets will try to tighten things up defensively after giving up their second-highest point total in regulation in Sunday's 110-106 loss at San Antonio. They also committed a season-high 25 turnovers in their third loss in five games.
"We weren't really sharp all night," coach Kevin McHale said. "They beat us on back cuts. They beat us on cuts and we weren't as sharp as we needed to be and the turnovers just killed us."
Harden finished with 28 points and has averaged 34.7 while making 27 of 30 from the free-throw line over his last three games. The two-time All-Star has scored 29.5 per game in his last four against the Wizards.
Dwight Howard had 24 points and 17 rebounds Sunday, while Corey Brewer scored a season-high 25 with six 3-pointers in his second game since being acquired from Minnesota.
Josh Smith, another recent addition, finished with five points and five fouls in his first start. Former Wizards forward Trevor Ariza also looks to bounce back after averaging 9.7 points on 32.2 percent shooting in his last three games.
The Rockets had won 19 consecutive home games against East opponents before falling 104-97 to Atlanta on Dec. 20.
