|
| | | CHICAGO: GUARDS: After playing it very safe and sitting out all of last spring, DERRICK ROSE should pretty much be his old self. Of course, he'll have to knock some rust off early in the year . . . JIMMY BUTLER was an iron man during last year's playoffs, and his role will only grow this season. His defense and energy, as well as ability to get to the line, could make Luol Deng expendable . . . MIKE DUNLEAVY is in line for the sixth man role, primarily as a long-range threat . . . With Rose's return, KIRK HINRICH slides back to the bench. His playing time will be especially limited with Dunleavy taking up minutes at the two . . . MARQUIS TEAGUE will continue to be used only in garbage time unless Hinrich ends up getting hurt or traded. FORWARDS: LUOL DENG is back on the trading block, as the Bulls learned life isn't so bad without him now that Jimmy Butler has emerged. His offensive role could be slightly reduced . . . CARLOS BOOZER will likely be amnestied next summer, so for all intents and purposes this is a contract year. He's likely to still be a disaster defensively, which means he's a part-time player under defensive-minded head coach Tom Thibodeau . . . TAJ GIBSON will finish games and likely take over Boozer's spot a year from now. He's a superior defender and, while he doesn't have Boozer's range, he's a capable finisher around the rim . . . Rookie TONY SNELL is a Thibodeau kind of player, a long-armed, athletic perimeter defender. He's unlikely to ever do much on offense though. CENTERS: JOAKIM NOAH may be consistently banged up, but he's capable of playing through the pain. Depending on the Bulls' playoff position, he might sit some games late in the year, but Thibodeau isn't shy about playing him 35 minutes per night . . . NAZR MOHAMMED is back as a designated screener on offense and hacker on defense.. | | HOUSTON: GUARDS: JAMES HARDEN is a franchise player, and as one of the league's elite pick-and-roll threats, he and Dwight Howard have the potential to be dominant . . . Trade rumors will continue to circle JEREMY LIN, who isn't an off-the-ball threat to fit alongside Harden. He is, however, clearly a starting-caliber point guard . . . PATRICK BEVERLEY really shined in back-up minutes last year, and he's part of the reason that Lin is expendable. He's strong defensively, and he proved capable of running the second unit. He'll be one of the league's top back-up PGs if Lin stays . . . Rookie combo guard ISAIAH CANAAN will be developed as a spot-up shooter . . . REGGIE WILLIAMS is a roster filler . . . AARON BROOKS is around as a reclamation project . . . RONNIE BREWER provides a much-needed athletic perimeter defender. FORWARDS: CHANDLER PARSONS is an elite role player. He entered the league with the reputation as a pure athlete, but it's his ability to knock down the corner three that's made him so valuable in Houston . . . GREG SMITH looks like another great find for the Rockets. He's an athletic banger who can allow Dwight Howard to roam a bit on defense . . . DONATAS MOTIEJUNAS showed flashes as a rookie, but the stretch four looks like a situational role player for the foreseeable future . . . FRANCISCO GARCIA will lend a veteran presence to the second unit . . . Versatile TERRENCE JONES could be in for more minutes as the Rockets look for the right role players . . . OMRI CASSPI might be getting his last chance at the NBA. CENTERS: DWIGHT HOWARD should be much happier in Houston, though the Rockets still have to convince him that he can dominate as a pick-and-roll player. He should make everyone forget about his season with the Lakers . . . The fact is OMER ASIK just doesn't fit alongside Howard. But if he stays somewhat happy in Houston, he could be a valuable second-unit player . . . MARCUS CAMBY has latched on to chase a ring. |

*Bulls-Rockets Preview* =======================
By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer
Chicago (9-14) at Houston (16-9), 9:30 p.m. EDT
Injuries have stripped the Chicago Bulls into one of the NBA's worst offensive clubs, which doesn't bode well heading into a matchup with one of the league's highest-scoring teams.
The Houston Rockets, however, may not be as prolific without leading scorer James Harden.
With Harden's status up in the air, the Rockets seek their ninth win in 10 home games Wednesday night while the visiting Bulls try to avoid their 12th loss in 15 games.
It's uncertain whether Harden will be able to play after rolling his ankle in the third quarter of a 106-91 loss at Sacramento on Sunday. He limped to the locker room, but returned to finish with 25 points in Houston's second loss on a three-game trip.
Assistant coach Kelvin Sampson, who is filling in for Kevin McHale following the death of the coach's mother, admitted he "probably should not have put" Harden back in the game.
Fellow guard Jeremy Lin also could be out for the Rockets (16-9) because of back spasms.
"It's very, very painful," Harden said. "I am trying to get through this, stay positive and focus on getting back."
Harden, averaging a team-high 24.7 points, has missed four games this season because of a foot injury. Houston has gone 3-1 in those contest, including a pair of home wins by a combined 40 points.
The All-Star guard totaled 54 points on 15-of-27 shooting to help Houston take both games from Chicago in last season's series.
Chandler Parsons contributed 41 points and hit 16 of 28 from the field in those meetings, while Dwight Howard has averaged 22.7 points and 14.3 boards in his last seven against the Bulls dating back to his time with Orlando.
The Rockets are going for their fourth straight victory over Chicago (9-14), which still ranks near the top of the league in points allowed (92.4 per game) and defensive field-goal percentage (42.4).
It's been a much different story offensively for the reeling Bulls. Luol Deng and Jimmy Butler have both missed a chunk of games, and now Kirk Hinrich could be out for a third straight game with a back injury.
Since sitting out 11 games because of a turf toe injury, Butler has totaled 31 points while shooting 9 for 29 in his last three. He missed 10 of 11 from the field on the way to four points in an 83-82 loss to Orlando on Monday.
Carlos Boozer hasn't fared much better, averaging 9.3 points on 12-of-44 shooting over his last three.
Since Dec. 7, the Bulls have put up 79.5 points per game, a 36.1 field-goal percentage and 26.3 3-point percentage - the NBA's lowest marks over that span.
"It's not pretty right now," said Mike Dunleavy, averaging 16.7 points in his last six games. "We are battling, we are trying, we just keep coming up short."
One Bull the Rockets will have to keep an eye on is Deng, who led Chicago with 26 points in his second game back from an Achilles injury but missed a potential game-tying layup in the closing seconds Monday. The forward has averaged 25.7 points on 53.2 percent shooting in the last six games he's played.
The Bulls hope to generate enough scoring to avoid their worst record over a 15-game stretch since opening the 2004-05 season 2-13.
That's likely to be difficult against Houston, which ranks near the top of the league with 107.0 points per game and has won eight of nine home games by an average of 13.7 points.
