| |  | CLEVELAND: GUARDS: KYRIE IRVING is the real deal, a heady playmaker and near-elite shooter. He should emerge as the NBA's next great point guard this season . . . Rookie DION WAITERS has a chance to step right into the starting lineup. He can get to the rim and generally makes good choices withthe ball. The only thing holding him back is defense after playing college ball in Syracuse's lazy zone . . . C.J. MILES will reportedly start at either the two or three spot, but he really needs to find the range on his shot again for him to stick in the starting lineup . . . Gunning combo guard DANIEL GIBSON is looking like he'll be their sixth man . . . The Cavs are still trying to figure out their second unit. JEREMY PARGO figures to be Irving's backup, but DONALD SLOAN is a better defender and could eventually pass him for this role, which doesn't mean many minutes unless Irving gets injured again. FORWARDS: TRISTAN THOMPSON is trying to add a perimeter shot to his repertoire. Don't count on him becoming David West, but he should improve offensively to go along with his rebounding and shot-blocking . . . ALONZO GEE returns as the starting small forward, excelling on the defensive end, but without a polished enough offensive game to earn 35 minutes per night . . . OMRI CASSPI was in and out of the rotation late in the year as he battled knee issues. It's getting close to make-or-break time for him . . . JON LEUER is a solid stretch four who has a real chance at a rotation spot . . . SAMARDO SAMUELS reportedly dropped some weight in his effort to find some minutes . . . LUKE WALTON is an unofficial member of the coaching staff . . . Undrafted rookie KEVIN JONES could make some noise with his work on the offensive boards . . . LUKE HARANGODY is more of a D-League talent. CENTERS: ANDERSON VAREJAO's wrist should be 100 percent, and Sideshow Anderson should be the same relentless, double-double threat he's always been . . . Rookie TYLER ZELLER is a 7-footer with some nice offensive skills -- he can knock down a jump shot in the half court, and run the floor. He'll struggle to defend in space, but made a living drawing charges at UNC, and should be able to play 20+ minutes as a rookie. | | HOUSTON: GUARDS: Houston has gutted its roster, and this is JEREMY LIN's team now. Coach Kevin McHale will use the same pick-and-roll offense he used with Goran Dragic, and Lin should do what he did in New York a year ago . . . KEVIN MARTIN is on the trade block. As long as he's in Houston, he'll be in and out of McHale's doghouse, especially seeing that he's not in the long-term plans . . . JEREMY LAMB should push Martin for minutes early. Lamb will have some defensive issues, but he's a cagey scorer who should mesh well with Lin . . . CARLOS DELFINO replaces Chase Budinger as the team's most reliable marksman from three-point range . . . TONEY DOUGLAS' defensive ability puts him in the running for a rotation spot . . . SHAUN LIVINGSTON can give them 12 to 15 minutes a night . . . Rookie SCOTT MACHADO, an outstanding passer, will back up Lin . . . GARY FORBES will have trouble finding minutes. FORWARDS: CHANDLER PARSONS was a nice surprise a year ago. He's a fifth option offensively but does the hustle/energy thing well . . . 2011 first-rounder DONATAS MOTIEJUNAS is a skilled 7-footer who fits with Lin. Expect him to grab a starting job by midseason, but he can also play center when required . . . This might be the year PATRICK PATTERSON makes an impact. His game is limited, but he can rebound and score around the basket . . . ROYCE WHITE is a 270-pounder with point guard skills. He needs the ball in his hands though, which is why he's not a great fit with Lin in the starting lineup . . . TERRENCE JONES has a tweener skill set. At this point, he's better suited for the second unit . . . Speaking of 'tweeners, MARCUS MORRIS looks to be nowhere near contributing. CENTERS: OMER ASIK earned his reputation as a defensive stud in Chicago, and he'll get a little more offensive freedom in Houston. He is quite foul-prone though, and he'll be tested on the free-throw line early and often . . . His backup, GREG SMITH, has more fouls (17) than points (14) in his 69-minute NBA career. |

The Houston Rockets hoped their longest homestand of the season would allow them to avoid the inconsistency that's plagued them at times, and they've played well in three of four thus far.
Houston, though, can't afford to take short-handed Cleveland lightly - particularly after the Cavaliers' latest effort.
The Rockets look for a 10th win in their last 12 home games as they continue this seven-game stretch at the Toyota Center on Friday night.
While the up-and-down Rockets haven't won more than three in a row or lost more than two straight since mid-January, they seem to be taking advantage of an opportunity to build some momentum on their home floor.
Houston has won nine of 11 at the Toyota Center, and on Wednesday bounced back from one of their worst losses of the season. After getting trounced by 30 against Golden State on Sunday, the Rockets (37-31) built a 26-point lead before hanging on for a 100-93 win over Utah.
James Harden had 29 points and hit 17 of 18 from the foul line, while Jeremy Lin added 24 on 9-of-13 shooting.
The Rockets, who hold the No. 7 spot in the Western Conference, extended their lead to 1 1/2 games over the eighth-place Los Angeles Lakers and three games over the ninth-place Jazz. They also moved to within one game of the Warriors for sixth place.
Now Houston will try to keep it going against the Central Division-worst Cavaliers (22-46) before wrapping up the homestand with a pair of first-place clubs in San Antonio and Indiana.
"We're still not locked into the playoffs yet, so every game counts," Harden said. "We have to bring our attention to detail to every game. (Friday) is a very big game for us."
Playing without top scorers Kyrie Irving, Dion Waiters and Anderson Varejao, Cleveland led by as many as 27 points in the third quarter on Wednesday before Miami stormed back for a 98-95 victory to extend its winning streak to 24 games.
Wayne Ellington finished with a team-high 20 points and Tristan Thompson added 18 and eight rebounds in the team's fourth straight loss.
The Cavs won't have any of their top three scorers Friday, which doesn't bode well considering they've lost 20 of 23 in Houston - including five straight by an average of 15.4 points. Cleveland also has lost 11 of its last 12 on the road versus West opponents.
"When we line up, we expect to go out there and win, regardless of who is out there," coach Byron Scott said.
Harden, who leads the NBA in free-throw makes (8.8) and attempts (10.2) per game, hit 14 of 15 from the line on the way to 29 points and added a career-high seven steals in a 112-104 victory at Cleveland on Jan. 5.
The Rockets are averaging a league-best 110.0 points at home and may be able to maintain that pace against the Cavaliers, who have allowed 105.8 points per game in their last 14 road contests.
Irving finished with 30 points, Alonzo Gee had 18 and Thompson added 14 and 16 rebounds in the first meeting, but Cleveland shot just 39.6 percent from the floor.
Thompson is playing well heading into this contest, totaling 38 points on 17-of-31 shooting and 19 boards in his last two games.
