KEY GAME INFORMATION
BOSTON: GUARDS: This offense now belongs to RAJON RONDO, and that should be especially true during the regular season . . . Even if he comes off the bench, JASON TERRY figures to see the bulk of the minutes at shooting guard. He provides some much-needed outside shooting after Ray Allen left and should challenge Paul Pierce for the team lead in shot attempts . . . Adding COURTNEY LEE was more of a move for the future. He's a fine young second-unit player for now and should be an heir apparent on one of the wings . . . AVERY BRADLEY could be out until December after shoulder surgery. As Boston's best perimeter defensive player, he could reclaim his starting job in the season's second half . . . The addition of LEANDRO BARBOSA gives Boston another veteran who can create his own offense in the second unit, something that was sorely missing in last year's playoff run. FORWARDS: PAUL PIERCE quietly had a great regular season last year. Though with some improved depth behind him, Rivers might have his 35-year-old All-Star wing rest more often . . . BRANDON BASS gives them another scoring option, even if he does struggle on the defensive end. He'll get full-time minutes only in certain matchups as long as the frontcourt is healthy . . . JEFF GREEN's heart condition is no longer a concern, but the tweener's role in Boston after a year off is cause for worry . . . There are already question marks surrounding rookie JARED SULLINGER's back. He's very similar to Bass: He can score out to mid-range but doesn't play much defense. Expect him to be strictly a second-unit player in his first NBA season . . . CHRIS WILCOX will provide fouls off the bench when healthy. CENTERS: The Celtics are prepared to go with KEVIN GARNETT in the middle, which was the case when they were at their best last season. His role on offense is still knocking down mid-range jumpers, and he's still an elite defensive player . . . Professional flopper JASON COLLINS will fill in nicely for the departed Greg Stiemsma . . . FAB MELO is years away from being ready to contribute (if he actually is ever ready to contribute) and DARKO MILICIC was also added via free agency for more frontcourt depth.
HOUSTON: GUARDS: Houston has gutted its roster, and this is JEREMY LIN's team now. Coach Kevin McHale will use the same pick-and-roll offense he used with Goran Dragic, and Lin should do what he did in New York a year ago . . . KEVIN MARTIN is on the trade block. As long as he's in Houston, he'll be in and out of McHale's doghouse, especially seeing that he's not in the long-term plans . . . JEREMY LAMB should push Martin for minutes early. Lamb will have some defensive issues, but he's a cagey scorer who should mesh well with Lin . . . CARLOS DELFINO replaces Chase Budinger as the team's most reliable marksman from three-point range . . . TONEY DOUGLAS' defensive ability puts him in the running for a rotation spot . . . SHAUN LIVINGSTON can give them 12 to 15 minutes a night . . . Rookie SCOTT MACHADO, an outstanding passer, will back up Lin . . . GARY FORBES will have trouble finding minutes. FORWARDS: CHANDLER PARSONS was a nice surprise a year ago. He's a fifth option offensively but does the hustle/energy thing well . . . 2011 first-rounder DONATAS MOTIEJUNAS is a skilled 7-footer who fits with Lin. Expect him to grab a starting job by midseason, but he can also play center when required . . . This might be the year PATRICK PATTERSON makes an impact. His game is limited, but he can rebound and score around the basket . . . ROYCE WHITE is a 270-pounder with point guard skills. He needs the ball in his hands though, which is why he's not a great fit with Lin in the starting lineup . . . TERRENCE JONES has a tweener skill set. At this point, he's better suited for the second unit . . . Speaking of 'tweeners, MARCUS MORRIS looks to be nowhere near contributing. CENTERS: OMER ASIK earned his reputation as a defensive stud in Chicago, and he'll get a little more offensive freedom in Houston. He is quite foul-prone though, and he'll be tested on the free-throw line early and often . . . His backup, GREG SMITH, has more fouls (17) than points (14) in his 69-minute NBA career.

*Celtics-Rockets Preview* =========================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

Boston (12-9) at Houston (10-11), 8:00 p.m. EDT

The Boston Celtics have made significant strides defensively. They'll need that improvement to continue as they begin a stretch of three straight games on the road - the first two coming against a pair of the NBA's top offensive teams.

The Celtics go for their third consecutive win and fourth in five games when they face the Houston Rockets on Friday night.

Boston (12-9) will take on a Rockets squad that's averaging 104.2 points before squaring off with a San Antonio club that's scoring 105.5 the next night. The Celtics, though, appear better equipped to handle those challenges than they were a few weeks ago.

Boston allowed an average of 100.1 points through the first 14 games, giving up 100-plus seven times in regulation. It then gave up 88.7 over the next six contests without allowing 100 points before a 117-115 double-overtime victory over Dallas on Wednesday.

The Mavericks shot 51.1 percent, but the Celtics managed to force 28 turnovers - their most since forcing 29 against Atlanta on Feb. 6, 2004.

Boston scored 34 points off Dallas' giveaways.

"We've been trapping," coach Doc Rivers said. "I've been talking about it a lot and over the past seven games it's been paying dividends for us. It's been terrific."

Paul Pierce's shooting has been inconsistent, as he's hitting 41.7 percent from the field and 35.0 percent from 3-point range for his lowest marks since 2002-03. However, he scored a season-high 34 points versus Dallas - 12 in the overtimes.

Rajon Rondo, averaging a league-high 12.9 assists, had 15 to go along with 16 points and nine rebounds in a career-high 52 minutes, 30 seconds Wednesday.

"We ask him to do a lot," Pierce said. "We ask him to push it up, score and rebound. We ask him to do a lot because he can do it."

While the Rockets (10-11) score a lot of points, they also give up more than anyone else at 104.8 per game. Houston had lost three in a row, allowing 121.3 points in that stretch, before limiting Washington to 39.4 percent shooting in a 99-93 on Wednesday.

It was the first time in nine games that the Rockets gave up fewer than 101 points.

James Harden returned after missing one game with a sprained ankle and scored 31, with 17 coming in the first quarter as Houston jumped out to a 27-17 lead.

Harden leads the team with 25.0 points per game, while all the other starters are averaging at least 10.6.

"(Harden) came out on fire, and we rode his scoring for a while," point guard Jeremy Lin said. "It's not just me and him - there's five of us out there. We're just trying to figure it all out and find a happy medium where we kind of maximize everybody."

Pierce scored 30 as the Celtics beat the Rockets 97-92 in overtime at Boston on March 6, ending a three-game skid in the series.
