KEY GAME INFORMATION
NEW ORLEANS: GUARDS: He's set to return from shin surgery, and the Pelicans need JRUE HOLIDAY to rescue this backcourt. He'll play as many minutes as he can handle . . . ERIC GORDON seems to be playing at half-speed. While his defense is atrocious, he's still an efficient scorer . . . Sixth man TYREKE EVANS will play solid minutes. He has the aggressiveness of an alpha, but he never developed a complete offensive game . . . The Pels seem just about done with AUSTIN RIVERS. He's still overmatched . . . RUSS SMITH could have a future as a scoring sixth man. He'll need injuries in front of him to crack this rotation . . . JIMMER FREDETTE can shoot, but can't stay on the court as arguably the league's biggest defensive liability. FORWARDS: The lone bright spot on this team, ANTHONY DAVIS is a bona fide star. He has improved defensively in space and as a rim protector, and his offensive game is coming along nicely . . . RYAN ANDERSON returns after missing most of last season with a back injury, which could potentially linger. If healthy, he'll play big minutes as a much-needed floor spacer . . . JOHN SALMONS will look to earn a rotation spot after being scooped up off waivers . . . After a few decent moments late last season, LUKE BABBITT will try to reinvent himself as a stretch-4. Unfortunately, he still can't guard anyone . . . DARIUS MILLER is still hanging around as a practice player. CENTERS: OMER ASIK provides a bodyguard for Anthony Davis. He'll also help clean up the many mistakes of this horrendous perimeter defense . . . ALEXIS AJINCA did enough late last season to warrant a look as the Pelicans No. 2 center . . . JEFF WITHEY can protect the rim, and might be able to carve out a role in his second season in head coach Monty Williams' system.
GOLDEN STATE: GUARDS: New head coach Steve Kerr doesn't figure to tweak this system much, so expect STEPHEN CURRY to keep doing his thing. He's added elite playmaking skills to his already outstanding deep shooting . . . The Warriors are reluctant to part with KLAY THOMPSON in part because of his three-point shooting, but mostly because of his defensive value alongside Curry . . . SHAUN LIVINGSTON will back up both guard spots. He's also the only proven point guard on the roster besides Curry . . . BRANDON RUSH will look to revive his career in Oakland. He'll have to prove his knees are healthy enough before he earns a rotation spot . . . It's a make or break year already for NEMANJA NEDOVIC, who was severely overmatched as a rookie. FORWARDS: ANDRE IGUODALA is a defensive specialist and no more than a role player on offense. His main job is to take some of the playmaking duties away from Curry . . . Kerr seems resigned to the fact that he's stuck with DAVID LEE. He has some value on offense, but remains one of the league's worst defensive frontcourt players. Expect him to lose some minutes under Kerr . . . HARRISON BARNES will play a bit of power forward in some small lineups, but mostly he'll play a wing spot. Barnes will have to regain his confidence early if he's going to be an impact sixth man . . . Kerr has hinted at a bigger role for DRAYMOND GREEN, who will play some stretch-4 this year . . . MARREESE SPEIGHTS gives them an offense-only big man off the bench. CENTERS: Kerr has hinted at a bigger offensive role for ANDREW BOGUT. But monitoring the Aussie's minutes may be the bigger goal, to ensure he's actually available for the postseason . . . Back-up center FESTUS EZELI should be ready to return from his knee injury, though he was having shin problems during Summer League.

*Pelicans-Warriors Preview* ===========================

New Orleans At Golden State, Game Two, 10:30 p.m. EDT

(AP) - The Golden State Warriors did a lot right in their playoff-opening win, but they also found out that Anthony Davis and the New Orleans Pelicans won't be easy to put away.

Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is Monday night in Oakland, where the top-seeded Warriors have won 19 straight and 40 of 42 this season. If the Pelicans have any hope to win a game, let alone the series, they'll need Davis at his best from start to finish each time they take the floor.

Davis knows this, and he said he's comfortable and confident in that role. But he wasn't when Game 1 began in front of a roaring sellout crowd of 19,596 dressed in a sea of golden yellow shirts.

"It's definitely a different level, different atmosphere," Davis said. "Calls are different. Guys been scouting you, they know your moves. It's very different. But this is what you come to the league for, to get playoff experience and eventually get to the Finals and win a ring. But it starts here.

"My first playoff experience, it was pretty hectic. So much going on, it was so loud I couldn't hear my teammates, my coaches. We started off bad as a team and picked it up as a team when we all got calm."

Indeed, Davis did his best to bring the Pelicans back from 25 points down.

He had 15 points and one rebound in the first three quarters. He had 20 points and six rebounds in the fourth, finishing with 35 points and seven rebounds.

Davis acknowledged he felt nervous and out of sync early on. Warriors center Andrew Bogut and versatile forward Draymond Green also had plenty to do with that, forcing him to take jump shots and contesting everything near the rim.

The Warriors said one of the reasons Davis got going is because they had a big lead and wanted to guard against 3-pointers. Pelicans coach Monty Williams said Davis calmed down and "figured some things out," though he didn't offer specifics.

Which side has the other solved is the biggest question heading into Game 2.

Either way, it leaves all the expectations on Davis, especially with the Pelicans facing the prospect of playing without point guard Tyreke Evans, who is questionable with a deep bone bruise in his left knee. Of course, Williams said the one thing he never worries with Davis is how he'll handle pressure.

"Late-game situations, if I'm out there in the huddle, he's looking me in the eyes the whole time," Williams said. "If I look up, he's looking at me. Because he just wants to tell me like, `OK, give me the ball. I'll do it."'

But there's a learning curve for everybody in the playoffs. Warriors point guard Stephen Curry said he had first-game jitters two years ago in Denver, and now he's a possible MVP on the NBA's best team.

Golden State looked the part for the first 35 minutes Saturday, building an 84-59 lead late in the third quarter before New Orleans finished on a 40-22 run. Curry finished with 34 points, going 9 of 12 from 2-point range but just 4 of 13 from 3.

"I was locked in and focused the whole night," Curry said. "In those situations, you want to get the crowd back into it. There's a weird kind of tension, especially in the second half when they made a couple runs. But in the playoffs, you have to expect anything. And whenever you're on the floor, just try to make an impact."

Green did just that on both ends, stuffing the stat sheet with 15 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists, three steals and two blocks while posting a team-best plus-23 in his 42 minutes. Bogut had 12 points, 14 boards and five assists.

"I thought Bogut and Draymond were brilliant," coach Steve Kerr said. "There's a reason Bogut's one of the top defensive players in the league and same with Draymond. They were really good (Saturday)."

If Evans can't go, the Pelicans will need bigger minutes out of Jrue Holiday. New Orleans' point guard missed 41 games with a stress reaction in his right leg before returning in the final week of the regular season, and had five points and five assists in 21 minutes in Game 1.
