| |  | MINNESOTA: GUARDS: RICKY RUBIO is a fine ball-handler and creative passer, but it would be nice if he knocked down some shots . . . The Wolves are still trying to move KEVIN MARTIN's contract. He has devolved into more of a spot-up shooter . . . ANDREW WIGGINS should immediately contribute for this team. He'll be an elite defender, sooner rather than later, and should be able to produce points as well . . . Shoot-first combo guard MO WILLIAMS will head up the second unit . . . J.J. BAREA is also likely to be moved. He can still do the Mighty Mouse, sixth-man thing . . . On paper, CHASE BUDINGER is a great fit alongside Rubio due to his shooting and movement off the ball. He has to stay healthy though . . . Head coach Flip Saunders is high on ZACH LaVINE, a pure athlete who didn't do much of anything as a freshman at UCLA. FORWARDS: THADDEUS YOUNG is now the best player in this Timberwolves frontcourt. He'll lead the team in scoring and eats up rebounds as well . . . ANTHONY BENNETT should play some significant minutes with this team. He's a good scorer and will try to prove that he was just not ready to come into a bad situation last season . . . COREY BREWER has established himself as a solid defender on the wing who can knock down some threes and run the floor well . . . GLENN ROBINSON III should earn immediate minutes due to his defense . . . SHABAZZ MUHAMMAD gets new life with a new coaching regime coming in. He could be a crafty second-unit scorer . . . RONNY TURIAF is a big body who can protect the rim. CENTERS: NIKOLA PEKOVIC is a big part of this offense without needing plays designed for him. He's arguably the top offensive rebounder in the NBA . . . GORGUI DIENG impressed late last season and should be ready for a bigger role. He and Pekovic might be in a timeshare by the season's second half. | | GOLDEN STATE: GUARDS: New head coach Steve Kerr doesn't figure to tweak this system much, so expect STEPHEN CURRY to keep doing his thing. He's added elite playmaking skills to his already outstanding deep shooting . . . The Warriors are reluctant to part with KLAY THOMPSON in part because of his three-point shooting, but mostly because of his defensive value alongside Curry . . . SHAUN LIVINGSTON will back up both guard spots. He's also the only proven point guard on the roster besides Curry . . . BRANDON RUSH will look to revive his career in Oakland. He'll have to prove his knees are healthy enough before he earns a rotation spot . . . It's a make or break year already for NEMANJA NEDOVIC, who was severely overmatched as a rookie. FORWARDS: ANDRE IGUODALA is a defensive specialist and no more than a role player on offense. His main job is to take some of the playmaking duties away from Curry . . . Kerr seems resigned to the fact that he's stuck with DAVID LEE. He has some value on offense, but remains one of the league's worst defensive frontcourt players. Expect him to lose some minutes under Kerr . . . HARRISON BARNES will play a bit of power forward in some small lineups, but mostly he'll play a wing spot. Barnes will have to regain his confidence early if he's going to be an impact sixth man . . . Kerr has hinted at a bigger role for DRAYMOND GREEN, who will play some stretch-4 this year . . . MARREESE SPEIGHTS gives them an offense-only big man off the bench. CENTERS: Kerr has hinted at a bigger offensive role for ANDREW BOGUT. But monitoring the Aussie's minutes may be the bigger goal, to ensure he's actually available for the postseason . . . Back-up center FESTUS EZELI should be ready to return from his knee injury, though he was having shin problems during Summer League. |

Christmas in Los Angeles didn't come with a Hollywood ending for the Golden State Warriors, but a homestand that will extend well into the new year could re-establish plenty of the team's cachet.
The six-game stay in Oakland begins Saturday night against the Minnesota Timberwolves, a prime target to contribute to the Warriors' eight-game home winning streak.
The streak is Golden State's longest since stringing 10 together from Feb. 15-March 24, 1994, but it's unlikely to be the topic of locker-room conversation after losses to the Lakers and Clippers.
Tuesday's 115-105 defeat came against a last-place team resting Kobe Bryant, while Thursday's 100-86 loss to the Clippers featured the Warriors' lowest scoring output of the season. Their only other game under 95 points was a 91-86 win in Oklahoma City on Nov. 23.
It was also their worst 3-point shooting game of the season at 21.4 percent (6 of 28). The Warriors (23-5), who have dropped three of five, are in danger of losing three straight for the first time this season.
"We're not invincible," point guard Stephen Curry said. "We have to play the way we're supposed to play - at our highest level - in order to win games. It you don't, you're susceptible to getting beat. But we're a good team. These last two games haven't shown our full potential, but it's important not to overreact to losing two games in a row."
Klay Thompson scored a team-high 15 points in the loss but has gone cold with a 12-for-33 shooting mark in the last two games.
David Lee's progress remains slow with the power forward yet to surpass 19 minutes in his three games back from a hamstring injury, but he was 5 for 5 against the Clippers.
There have been plenty of points to go around against the Timberwolves (5-23), who have allowed 109.3 while losing seven straight overall. They've also dropped seven straight on the road and are allowing a ridiculous 115.0 points in 14 away games this season. The last team to hold that pace for an entire season was the 1992-93 Dallas Mavericks (115.6).
Friday's 106-102 loss in Denver established Minnesota's longest losing streak of the season and its worst since an 11-game slide from March 30-April 17, 2012. The Timberwolves dropped nine straight on the road from Feb. 22-March 21, 2013.
Against the Nuggets, they shot 39.8 percent and were 3 of 15 from 3-point range, but that hasn't been too far off what they've produced from the perimeter lately. They last made more than six 3s in a game on Nov. 28 and are shooting 27.0 percent with an average of 3.1 makes in 14 games since - easily the worst numbers in the league in that time.
Thaddeus Young had 23 points in Denver and has become the injury-plagued team's leading scorer (14.4 points per game) with Kevin Martin out, but he's shot 38.8 percent over four games.
Andrew Wiggins contributed 22 points and is averaging 24.5 in his last two following three games in single digits.
Minnesota had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but Chase Budinger stepped out of bounds after a timeout.
"We're a young team and sometimes it happens like that at the end of the game," Young said.
The Warriors opened the season series with a 102-86 win in Minnesota on Dec. 8, giving them nine wins in the last 10 meetings. Lee missed that game but averaged 23.3 points while shooting 71.1 percent in three games against the Timberwolves last season.
Minnesota's Martin (broken wrist), Ricky Rubio (sprained ankle) and Nikola Pekovic (sore foot, sprained wrist) remain out.
