KEY GAME INFORMATION
DALLAS: LAST SEASON: 33-49, finished tied for 12th in Western Conference.
COACH: Rick Carlisle (12th season with Mavericks, 470-416; 18th season overall, 751-627).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Luka Doncic (21.2 ppg), G Delon Wright (12.2 with Memphis), G-F Justin Jackson (8.2), F Kristaps Porzingis (sidelined by knee injury), C Dwight Powell (10.6).
KEY LOSSES: F Dirk Nowitzki, G Devin Harris, C Salah Mejri.
KEY ADDITIONS: Wright, G Seth Curry, F Isaiah Roby.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: The world will be watching the Euro pair of Doncic and Porzingis, literally. The Mavericks are headliners internationally now that the 20-year-old rookie of the year from Slovenia and the 7-foot-3 Latvian are finally getting to play together. Dallas held Porzingis out for the last two months last season after the blockbuster trade that brought him from New York, even though he could have played. Their debut together is even more intriguing since it's Dallas' first season without Nowitzki, the German superstar who retired after setting an NBA record by playing all 21 seasons with the same franchise. The biggest question is who among the role players will emerge. Keep an eye on Wright. The Mavericks liked him in the 2015 draft. AD
OUTLOOK: The Mavericks wanted to sign a significant piece in free agency after the trading-deadline addition of Porzingis, who had just been named a 2018 All-Star before the knee injury that sidelined him for 20 months. They had to settle on Wright as a restricted free agent in a sign-and-trade with Memphis, so Dallas will lean heavily on Doncic and Porzingis while trying to get back to the playoffs after missing three straight seasons. It's the longest stretch without the postseason for the franchise since it was among the worst in sports coming out of the 1990s. It won't be easy in the West. The Mavericks will exceed expectations if they contend for a playoff spot.
DETROIT: LAST SEASON: 41-41, lost in first round of Eastern Conference playoffs.
COACH: Dwane Casey (second season, 11th NBA season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Reggie Jackson (15.4 ppg), G Bruce Brown (4.3 ppg), G Tony Snell (6.0 ppg), F Blake Griffin (24.5 ppg), C Andre Drummond (17.3 ppg).
KEY LOSSES: G Wayne Ellington, G Ish Smith.
KEY ADDITIONS: G Derrick Rose, G Tony Snell.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: There are no illusions about Rose still being an MVP candidate, but he averaged 18 points a game last season and could be a real X-factor for Detroit. The Pistons have relied on the trio of Griffin, Drummond and Jackson for a while now, and Jackson has been the most erratic member of that group. If Rose gives Detroit more production at point guard, that could be a big plus for the Pistons, although his health is always a concern.
OUTLOOK: Griffin was simply terrific last season, re-establishing himself as one of the game's stars, but his injury woes popped up again right around playoff time. Detroit would love to manage his minutes in a way that keeps him fresh for the end of the season, but that won't be easy if the Pistons are on the playoff bubble like last season. Another postseason berth is certainly possible, and if things break right, maybe Detroit can get a more favorable seed and win a round, but the gap between the Pistons and the conference's top teams remains formidable.
PREVIEW
Pistons, Mavs tip off NBA's visit to Mexico

Two teams venture south of the border expecting to have an enjoyable experience, but only one will return a winner when the Dallas Mavericks and Detroit Pistons square off in Mexico City on Thursday night.

The Mavericks have had three days off since their last game while the Pistons have enjoyed two, allowing both teams to turn their attention to the site of the game rather than the NBA standings as the league prepares for its 12th-ever regular-season game in the Mexican capital.

The San Antonio Spurs and Phoenix Suns will make it 13 when they clash Saturday night at Mexico City Arena.

"I think it's great that we do this," Mavericks guard J.J. Barea, one of his club's Spanish-speaking players, said earlier this week. "I've been there a bunch of times with the Puerto Rico national team and with the NBA, and every time we go, it's a great time.

"The people are great. The fans love basketball, love the NBA. So I think it's important we go down there and do a good job."

The Mavericks were doing great north of the border until seeing a five-game winning streak come to an end with a home loss to the Sacramento Kings on Sunday.

Dallas and the Houston Rockets were the first NBA teams to play a regular-season game in Mexico City in December 1997. The Mavericks lost that game to their Southwest Division rival.

The Mavericks returned to pick up a win over Phoenix in January 2017.

The Pistons, meanwhile, have never played a regular-season game in Mexico, but they did travel to London to face the New York Knicks and take a 102-87 loss in January 2013.

Despite being at a geographical disadvantage, Detroit has been designated as the home team in the international affair.

Make no mistake, Detroit vice chairman Arn Tellem boasted this week, the Pistons are proud to be invited.

"It's a great association with us and our neighboring country, and to me, a feel-good opportunity for the Pistons, using sports to bring two countries together -- especially in the times we're living in -- it's more important than ever," he said. "It's a very important market where they love basketball."

Mexican basketball fans will get an opportunity to see two of the NBA's marquee talents.

Mavericks guard Luka Doncic, who speaks fluent Spanish after having spent time playing for Real Madrid, rates as an early candidate for NBA Most Valuable Player after having scored 20 or more points in each of his past 19 games. He ranks among the league leaders with averages of 30 points and 9.2 assists per game.

Pistons forward Blake Griffin, meanwhile, is averaging 18.2 points in 12 games since returning from season-opening hamstring and knee issues.

Griffin was held to five points in Detroit's most recent outing, but Derrick Rose produced a 105-103 win at New Orleans with a buzzer-beating 14-footer that capped a 21-point night.

The meeting will be the first of the season between the Mavericks and Pistons. Their past three matchups -- all won by the home team -- have been decided by a total of 16 points, one game in overtime.
