KEY GAME INFORMATION
MINNESOTA: LAST SEASON: 36-46, finished 11th in Western Conference.
COACH: Ryan Saunders (second season, 17-25 as interim coach last season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Jeff Teague (12.1 ppg), G Andrew Wiggins (18.1), F Jake Layman (7.6), F Robert Covington (14.5), C Karl-Anthony Towns (24.4).
KEY LOSSES: G Derrick Rose, G Tyus Jones, F Taj Gibson, F Dario Saric, F Anthony Tolliver, G Jerryd Bayless, F Luol Deng.
KEY ADDITIONS: Layman, G Jarrett Culver, G Shabazz Napier, G/F Treveon Graham, F Noah Vonleh, F Jordan Bell, G Jaylen Nowell, C Naz Reid.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Towns is as versatile of a big man as there is in the league, but he can't carry the scoring load alone so the pressure will be on Wiggins to take a step forward under Saunders in the second year of his max contract extension carrying a $27 million salary cap hit. Having a healthy Covington, the team's best defender who arrived in the Jimmy Butler trade from the Sixers last season but missed the last 45 games because of a bone bruise on his knee, will be a critical factor. Culver, the sixth overall pick in the draft out of NCAA runner up Texas Tech, ought to provide more of that valuable perimeter defense along with Josh Okogie off the bench. Either of them could crack the starting lineup at some point, too.
OUTLOOK: The Timberwolves have started fresh, yet again, with Saunders, the youngest coach in the league, beneath an overhauled front office headed by new president of basketball operations Gersson Rosas. With Towns and Wiggins, they have a pair of under-25 standouts locked in, and a quiet offseason relative to the rest of the NBA yielded some useful role players in Layman, Vonleh, Bell, Napier and Graham. The first steps are to establish themselves as a far more consistent and efficient team on defense and shooting from the outside. With the Western Conference even more loaded than before, though, it will be tough to measure progress in the standings. Increasing their win total will be a tall order.
DETROIT: LAST SEASON: 41-41, lost in first round of Eastern Conference playoffs.
COACH: Dwane Casey (second season, 11th NBA season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Reggie Jackson (15.4 ppg), G Bruce Brown (4.3 ppg), G Tony Snell (6.0 ppg), F Blake Griffin (24.5 ppg), C Andre Drummond (17.3 ppg).
KEY LOSSES: G Wayne Ellington, G Ish Smith.
KEY ADDITIONS: G Derrick Rose, G Tony Snell.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: There are no illusions about Rose still being an MVP candidate, but he averaged 18 points a game last season and could be a real X-factor for Detroit. The Pistons have relied on the trio of Griffin, Drummond and Jackson for a while now, and Jackson has been the most erratic member of that group. If Rose gives Detroit more production at point guard, that could be a big plus for the Pistons, although his health is always a concern.
OUTLOOK: Griffin was simply terrific last season, re-establishing himself as one of the game's stars, but his injury woes popped up again right around playoff time. Detroit would love to manage his minutes in a way that keeps him fresh for the end of the season, but that won't be easy if the Pistons are on the playoff bubble like last season. Another postseason berth is certainly possible, and if things break right, maybe Detroit can get a more favorable seed and win a round, but the gap between the Pistons and the conference's top teams remains formidable.
PREVIEW
Pistons to get Griffin back for clash with Wolves

Blake Griffin will make his season debut for the Detroit Pistons on Monday.

The All-Star power forward missed the first 10 games this season due to a sore left hamstring and posterior left knee soreness. Griffin was cleared for all basketball-related activities on Thursday.

"I'm playing tomorrow," he said after Sunday's practice.

Griffin will have a minutes restriction in the home game against Minnesota, though it's uncertain how much he can play. That will be determined by the medical, training and coaching staffs.

"Before the game, I'll know," he said. "I'll put that in my mind and do what I can in those minutes."

Griffin averaged 35 minutes a game last season, but it will be awhile before the coaching staff allows him to return to his normal workload.

"I'm going to be forced to be eased into it," he said. "Probably don't know what to expect, sort of going in with an open mind. I don't know if I've ever been on this type of restriction before."

Griffin carried the Pistons into the playoffs last season while averaging 24.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 5.4 assists over 75 games.

The offense revolved around him, and he eventually wore down and required knee surgery after the season. He doesn't believe he'll be relied upon to score as much this season due to the improvement of Luke Kennard and Bruce Brown and the additions of Tony Snell, Markieff Morris and Derrick Rose.

"It's my job to fit in to all that and help make these guys better," Griffin said. "Each season is different. Last season, I felt I had to take on more of a scoring role. This year, we have guys who are primed to score a little bit more in a variety of different ways. I don't see that being as big of a role for me this year as it is facilitating and picking and choosing times (to score) down the stretch."

Rose has missed the last four games with a hamstring injury, but he practiced Sunday and is also close to returning.

Minnesota lost 100-98 in overtime to Denver on Sunday despite a frantic push late in regulation. The Timberwolves were plagued by poor shooting, as they went 6-for-45 on 3-point attempts.

The Wolves rallied from a 16-point deficit in the final seven minutes of regulation.

"A lot of in-and-outs, a lot of great looks that we had," forward Robert Covington told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "Definitely it felt (like) there was a lid (on the basket). That's part of what happened, what allowed us not to come out with this win."

The Timberwolves have lost three of their last four games.

"It's disappointing," coach Ryan Saunders said to the Star Tribune. "I always say I'm going to take positives from the game, even losses. ... We said with about six minutes left, 'We're going to make one push here.' These guys came back. They fought."

The Pistons won both meetings last year, edging the Timberwolves 129-123 in overtime at Minnesota and thumping them 131-114 in Detroit.

Griffin led the way in the first game with 34 points and eight rebounds, while Andre Drummond stood out in the rematch with 31 points and 15 rebounds. Minnesota's star player, Karl-Anthony Towns, was limited to an average of 20 points and six rebounds in those contests.
