KEY GAME INFORMATION
NEW YORK: GUARDS: A huge upgrade over Raymond Felton, JOSE CALDERON's shooting and low turnover rate make him a good fit in the triangle offense. Defense will be an issue . . . His shot selection will always be laughable, but J.R. SMITH will still have the occasional blow-up game . . . IMAN SHUMPERT never looked right last season. He won't get bumped from the rotation, but he's in danger of getting just part-time minutes . . . He'll defend, and if his strong shooting as a rookie wasn't a fluke, TIM HARDAWAY JR. will push his way into the starting five . . . PABLO PRIGIONI is a poor man's Calderon . . . SHANE LARKIN has some long-term upside, but is unlikely to contribute this season. FORWARDS: The triangle offense should play to CARMELO ANTHONY's strengths and open things up a bit more than the iso-heavy system they ran under Mike Woodson. He'll be in the running for another scoring title . . . It's another year of ANDREA BARGNANI. The Knicks are too thin to not play him, but his defense is atrocious and he hasn't shot it well in years . . . AMAR'E STOUDEMIRE's monster deal expires after this season, and a trade is a possibility. In a best-case scenario, he can be effective for 20 minutes or so per night . . . Second-rounder CLEANTHONY EARLY has a chance to break into this rotation. He'll defend and pick up some hustle points . . . QUINCY ACY and TRAVIS OUTLAW will provide some much needed depth and energy for a team that can sometimes be lackadaisical on the court. CENTERS: With Tyson Chandler gone, it will be up to SAMUEL DALEMBERT to pick up the defensive slack. He's a capable rim protector and could be in for as much playing time as he's gotten in years . . . JASON SMITH is another defensive-minded big man. He's good in space but is not a polished shot blocker . . . COLE ALDRICH was good enough late last season to earn a bench spot in the 2014-15 campaign.
DETROIT: GUARDS: New head coach Stan Van Gundy's system is perfect for BRANDON JENNINGS, as it is heavy on high pick-and-rolls, which is where Jennings is most dangerous. He'll never be an efficient scorer . . . Detroit gave a good chunk of change to JODIE MEEKS, so he's likely to start as a spot-up shooter when he returns from a back injury in January . . . A Tskitishvili Award-winner as one of the stars of Summer League, KENTAVIOUS CALDWELL-POPE has a shot to carve out sixth-man minutes . . . After a mini-breakout with Chicago, D.J. AUGUSTIN is the insurance policy behind Jennings. He's also a great fit for Van Gundy's system . . . WILL BYNUM has been downright solid with the second unit, but he'll have to play his way back into the rotation . . . This is a redshirt season for SPENCER DINWIDDIE as he comes back from a torn ACL. FORWARDS: They'll keep shopping JOSH SMITH, who is miscast as a 3 on this roster . . . KYLE SINGLER will continue to see solid part-time minutes. He can play both wing spots and has become a good enough threat on corner threes . . . CARON BUTLER joins a crowded frontcourt. He's evolved into a three-point specialist in the latter part of his career . . . Van Gundy is a JONAS JEREBKO believer. The stretch-4 fell out of favor the past two seasons, but he has a chance to earn a big role off the bench . . . CARTIER MARTIN gives them another athletic wing who can shoot the three . . . Euro import LUIGI DATOME was a big disappointment last season. He'll have a tough time breaking into this rotation . . . TONY MITCHELL might be looking at another year in the D-League . . . GREG MONROE is an everyday double-double threat. He'll fill the stat sheet as he plays for a contract for next season. CENTERS: ANDRE DRUMMOND is a monster on the boards with Defensive Player of the Year upside once he improves in space. Offensively, he can dunk but not much else . . . AARON GRAY is here to fill out the roster once he's cleared to return from his heart problems.

*Knicks-Pistons Preview* ========================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

New York (10-46) at Detroit (23-34), 7:30 p.m. EDT

One of several clubs vying for the Eastern Conference's final playoff spot, the Detroit Pistons are hoping it doesn't take long to find some cohesion in the wake of last week's trades.

There might not be a better time to get into a groove than in a home matchup with the New York Knicks.

The new-look Pistons go for their seventh victory in 11 games Friday night against the league-worst Knicks, losers of eight straight.

With Tayshaun Prince playing for the first time and Reggie Jackson starting his second game since being acquired, the Pistons were still trying to get used to one another in Tuesday's 102-93 home loss to surging Cleveland.

Prince, who played his first 10 1/2 seasons in Detroit before being dealt to Memphis in January 2013, had seven points in his first start since heading back to Auburn Hills in a deal with Boston.

"Got thrown into the fire there, playing 30 minutes, so hopefully this will get me ready for the back to back Friday and Saturday," Prince told the team's official website.

The new backcourt of Jackson and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope has given the Pistons reason for optimism after they led by nine at halftime before the Cavaliers outscored them 49-31 over the final two quarters.

Jackson finished with 22 points, nine assists and eight rebounds, while Caldwell-Pope scored 21. Jackson has totaled 39 points since arriving in a trade from Oklahoma City and is averaging 20.1 points and 7.7 assists in 15 starts this season.

"We're improving and we'll continue to improve," coach Stan Van Gundy said. "We've just got some things we've got to work on."

Van Gundy would like to see his squad cut down on its 15 turnovers, improve its 18 of 30 free-throw shooting and tighten up defensively on the perimeter after allowing a season-high 14 3-pointers.

The Pistons (23-34) now look to ensure a winning five-game homestand as they try to move up in a pack of five teams separated by one game in the race for the East's final playoff spot.

The Knicks (10-46), who have lost by an average of 14.0 points since last winning Feb. 1, have gone 5 for 40 from 3-point range in their last two games. They've also forced 17.3 turnovers per game over their last four, but have given up an average of 109.0 points and allowed opponents to shoot 41.7 percent from long distance in their last three.

"We have lineups on the floor that haven't played together very much," coach Derek Fisher said. "Some of it is who our guys are in terms of youth and understanding how to play defense."

Andrea Bargnani had 17 points in Wednesday's 115-94 loss at Boston.

Langston Galloway, averaging 15.3 points in his last three games, could get more time at point guard with starter Jose Calderon doubtful due to an Achilles injury.

New York has averaged a league-low 88.7 points on 41.0 percent shooting in 12 games since Jan. 24 and has scored 88.0 per game in two losses to the Pistons.

Detroit's Andre Drummond has totaled 33 rebounds and Greg Monroe has pulled down 28 in the season series. The Pistons have outrebounded the Knicks 104-90, winning 98-95 in Detroit on Nov. 5 and 97-81 at New York on Jan. 2.
