| |  | NEW ORLEANS: GUARDS: This offense will belong to ERIC GORDON. He'll get over the fact that the Hornets matched his offer from Phoenix, and as long as his surgically-repaired knee holds up, he's one of the most complete young scorers in the NBA . . . The Hornets reached for AUSTIN RIVERS with the 10th pick because Monty Williams wants to coach him and thinks he can be an NBA point guard. Rivers has the handle, but his athleticism is ordinary and, more importantly, he has never shown a PG mentality at any level . . . GREIVIS VASQUEZ is the closest thing to a true point guard on this roster. He'll see solid minutes assuming Rivers' adjustment is a tough one . . . Well-rounded ROGER MASON JR. will also provide point guard depth . . . XAVIER HENRY hasn't lived up to his reputation as a shooter, but the Hornets can be patient with him . . . Rookie BRIAN ROBERTS has had a strong enough preseason to likely earn a roster spot. FORWARDS: ANTHONY DAVIS should step right in as a starter. His offensive game is further along than he gets credit for, and on the defensive end he's an absolute force from the basket out to the perimeter . . . He'll probably miss having Dwight Howard drawing in defenses, but RYAN ANDERSON has always been a very good three-point shooter. He and Davis are unique enough talents to share the court even if they're both power forwards . . . AL-FAROUQ AMINU made some strides on the defensive end late last season, which is what will get him minutes under Williams. He's underwhelming on the offensive end . . . If HAKIM WARRICK couldn't succeed as Steve Nash's pick-and-roll partner, it seems unlikely he'll ever help in New Orleans . . . Rookie DARIUS MILLER is looking to establish some kind of role with the team . . . LANCE THOMAS is doubtful to earn a salary to pay off his jewelry debts. CENTERS: ROBIN LOPEZ has always had the ability to protect the rim and does a decent job in space. Look for him to end up grabbing the bulk of minutes in the middle . . . JASON SMITH gives the Hornets a more offensive-minded option off the bench. | | DETROIT: GUARDS: RODNEY STUCKEY was hampered by nagging injuries a year ago. If he's healthy, he's the best offensive weapon they have . . . BRANDON KNIGHT is more of a combo guard running the point. He can shoot, but doesn't bring much else to the table . . . With Ben Gordon gone, WILL BYNUM has a chance to regain a significant role . . . The Pistons' two second-round picks have a chance to carve out big roles. KIM ENGLISH has a skill set similar to Gordon's, capable of heating up and scoring in bunches . . . KHRIS MIDDLETON is more of a spot-up, catch-and-shoot threat only . . . Former No. 6 overall pick JONNY FLYNN agreed to a non-guaranteed contract in October, as he is no guarantee to even make this sorry roster. FORWARDS: TAYSHAUN PRINCE is still hanging on as the Pistons' best all-around player . . . JASON MAXIELL should be able to reclaim his starting spot early. He rebounds and takes up space . . . JONAS JEREBKO showed flashes but looked rusty in his first year back from an Achilles injury . . . 2011 2nd-rounder KYLE SINGLER has a good chance to step into the rotation after a solid year in Spain . . . COREY MAGGETTE was acquired in a Ben Gordon salary dump. He'll see limited minutes . . . AUSTIN DAYE regressed big-time last year. Unless he gets off to a hot start, he'll be on the outside looking in at the rotation . . . TERRENCE WILLIAMS is seeking a new lease on life, but could be too much of a head case to realize he's wasting his talent . . . The Pistons are counting down the days left on CHARLIE VILLANUEVA's contract (two years). CENTERS: GREG MONROE is a solid fit in Frank's system. He's not a great athlete, but he can score and move the ball on offense, as well as rebound . . . ANDRE DRUMMOND could one day be a perfect fit alongside Monroe. But for now, he'll watch and learn as a raw, boom-or-bust prospect . . . VIACHESLAV KRAVTSOV is an athletic big who will bring energy, but little offense in limited minutes. |

The All-Star break may not be coming soon enough for No. 1 overall pick Anthony Davis, who has shown signs of hitting "the wall."
Davis and the New Orleans Hornets try to wrap up a three-game road swing with a winning mark Monday night when they play the Detroit Pistons.
While Davis - averaging 12.8 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in 37 games - was selected to participate in the Rising Stars Challenge during All-Star weekend, the 19-year-old has slowed of late by averaging 6.0 points and 4.7 rebounds while shooting 37.5 percent in his last three games.
He had a season-low two points on 1-of-6 shooting in 19-plus minutes Sunday when the Hornets (17-34) were denied a third straight victory in their 102-89 defeat at Toronto. Robin Lopez had 19 points for New Orleans, which allowed Toronto to shoot 51.3 percent and score 50 points in the paint.
"AD just didn't have it for whatever reason," Hornets coach Monty Williams said. "Guys are coming after him and he's got to accept the challenge."
Davis has totaled 10 points on 5-for-17 shooting in the first two legs of this trip and failed to get to the foul line in either game. The forward, though, has shown some resiliency on the back end of consecutive nights, averaging 13.7 points and 7.4 rebounds on 51.0 percent shooting in nine such occasions.
He'll face a formidable low-post tandem at Detroit, where Jason Maxiell and Greg Monroe will offer the most resistance for the Pistons (20-32), who have made adjustments to win both their games since rookie forward Andre Drummond suffered a small fracture in his lower back.
The ninth overall pick had averaged 7.3 points and 7.5 rebounds off the bench in 50 games before the injury, but Monroe has been playing some of his best basketball of the season and enters this game with a career-high six straight double-doubles. The Pistons pivot had 14 points and 13 rebounds on Saturday in a 105-100 victory at Milwaukee, and Charlie Villanueva has proven a capable replacement for Drummond, hitting a tiebreaking 3-pointer late against the Bucks and totaling 39 points and 21 rebounds in the last two games.
"As a team, we definitely did a good job of staying poised," said Monroe, who has averaged 19.0 points and 12.8 rebounds while shooting 54.0 percent during his six-game surge. "Obviously, Charlie hit a big shot, but we got some stops late."
Detroit hasn't won three straight since its season-high four-game run from Dec. 28-Jan. 4, with all the victories coming at home. The Pistons have won their last seven games when scoring at least 100 points and have dropped their last nine when failing to reach the century mark.
Monroe had 24 points and 16 rebounds in the only meeting between the teams last season, an 89-87 Pistons victory at home. Detroit has won its last three home games over the Hornets by a combined 11 points, with the two victories before the 2011-12 season coming in overtime.
