| |  | SACRAMENTO: GUARDS: MARCUS THORNTON is the only one guaranteed a consistent role on the perimeter . . . ISAIAH THOMAS was the story of the second half for the Kings. He can fill up the box score, but at 5-foot-9 (at best) he's too much of a defensive liability and not a point guard . . . AARON BROOKS is the most talented guard on this team. He's had attitude problems in the past, but he could, and should, lead this team . . . Now that he remained in Sacto, TYREKE EVANS will be playing off the ball at the three against his wishes . . . The Kings will keep on trying to unload JOHN SALMONS, who's not a useful NBA player . . . JIMMER FREDETTE should have a role off the bench, but his ball-handling is not where it has to be for an NBA point guard . . . FRANCISCO GARCIA's chance seems to have passed him by. FORWARDS: THOMAS ROBINSON should emerge as a starter early in his rookie year. He has his flaws on both ends of the floor, but he brings energy and doesn't need a lot of touches to get his points . . . Even if Robinson knocks him to the bench, JASON THOMPSON should play the five at times and see close to starter's minutes . . . JAMES JOHNSON should also play big minutes soon considering his ability to make positive contributions without a lot of touches . . . CHUCK HAYES should continue to play second-unit minutes as a glue guy . . . TRAVIS OUTLAW has regressed to the point that he's lucky to have a roster spot . . . TYLER HONEYCUTT has an intriguing skill set as a defensive-minded point forward, but he's likely ticketed for the D-League again. CENTERS: DeMARCUS COUSINS came on strong late last season. There's no doubt he has All-Star potential, but between his awful shot selection and occasional attitude problems, he just hasn't lived up to his potential. After Team USA passed on him this summer because of reported maturity problems, he might still not get it. | | DETROIT: GUARDS: RODNEY STUCKEY was hampered by nagging injuries a year ago. If he's healthy, he's the best offensive weapon they have . . . BRANDON KNIGHT is more of a combo guard running the point. He can shoot, but doesn't bring much else to the table . . . With Ben Gordon gone, WILL BYNUM has a chance to regain a significant role . . . The Pistons' two second-round picks have a chance to carve out big roles. KIM ENGLISH has a skill set similar to Gordon's, capable of heating up and scoring in bunches . . . KHRIS MIDDLETON is more of a spot-up, catch-and-shoot threat only . . . Former No. 6 overall pick JONNY FLYNN agreed to a non-guaranteed contract in October, as he is no guarantee to even make this sorry roster. FORWARDS: TAYSHAUN PRINCE is still hanging on as the Pistons' best all-around player . . . JASON MAXIELL should be able to reclaim his starting spot early. He rebounds and takes up space . . . JONAS JEREBKO showed flashes but looked rusty in his first year back from an Achilles injury . . . 2011 2nd-rounder KYLE SINGLER has a good chance to step into the rotation after a solid year in Spain . . . COREY MAGGETTE was acquired in a Ben Gordon salary dump. He'll see limited minutes . . . AUSTIN DAYE regressed big-time last year. Unless he gets off to a hot start, he'll be on the outside looking in at the rotation . . . TERRENCE WILLIAMS is seeking a new lease on life, but could be too much of a head case to realize he's wasting his talent . . . The Pistons are counting down the days left on CHARLIE VILLANUEVA's contract (two years). CENTERS: GREG MONROE is a solid fit in Frank's system. He's not a great athlete, but he can score and move the ball on offense, as well as rebound . . . ANDRE DRUMMOND could one day be a perfect fit alongside Monroe. But for now, he'll watch and learn as a raw, boom-or-bust prospect . . . VIACHESLAV KRAVTSOV is an athletic big who will bring energy, but little offense in limited minutes. |

After consecutive wins over a pair of first-place teams, the Detroit Pistons are beginning to play with some confidence on their home floor.
The short-handed Sacramento Kings have also turned it around at home, but they've been woeful on the road as they begin a four-game trip.
The Pistons seek their fourth straight victory at The Palace on Tuesday night when they open 2013 against the Kings, one of the NBA's worst teams away from home.
Detroit (11-22) has won four of five after beating Southeast Division leader Miami and then-Central leader Milwaukee in back-to-back home games.
"We've just got keep taking advantage of these games at home while we have this streak," forward Tayshaun Prince told the league's official website.
Seemingly forgotten until recently, forward Charlie Villanueva has played a key role in the past four contests, averaging 15.5 points and shooting 55.8 percent from the field. He averaged 6.8 points in his first 19 games.
Center Greg Monroe could also be factor against the Kings, having averaged 26.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in the last two meetings. Monroe posted his first career triple-double with 21 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists in a 105-103 loss at Sacramento on Nov. 7.
With guard Rodney Stuckey questionable because of a left ankle sprain, Will Bynum looks to continue his recent surge. He's scored 21.3 points and shot 52.9 percent - going 7 of 11 from 3-point range - in his last three contests.
The Pistons have made 46.7 percent from beyond the arc while averaging 104.0 points in their last five.
Detroit should have a good chance to keep rolling against a Sacramento team that has allowed 106.2 points per contest during its six-game road losing streak. The Kings (11-19) have won four straight at home, but their 1-12 road record is worst in the conference.
With Sacramento's backcourt banged up, Isaiah Thomas made the most of his second straight start Sunday with a season-high 27 points in a 118-96 win over Boston.
"What he's been able to do is kind of give us a little injection of the steam that we need," coach Keith Smart said. "He's done that, plus he's making his shots."
Thomas is expected to get another start Tuesday with guards Aaron Brooks and Tyreke Evans sidelined due to injury. The Kings could also be without guard Marcus Thornton after he suffered a sprained left ankle Sunday.
DeMarcus Cousins will try to build off his 12-point, 10-assist, 10-rebound effort in Sunday's 118-96 victory over Boston. Cousins had 21 points and 11 rebounds to help Sacramento snap a five-game losing streak to the Pistons in November.
Sacramento has recorded at least 28 assists in four straight games, its best such streak of the season.
Detroit, though, has been tough defensively on its home floor, allowing 87.4 points in its last five games.
