KEY GAME INFORMATION
PORTLAND: GUARDS: Portland will turn point guard duties over to rookie DAMIAN LILLARD. The leap from Big Sky Conference to NBA will be a big one, but Lillard is an efficient scorer who can manage the offense . . . WESLEY MATTHEWS is more of a glue guy. He can't create his own offense, but he can heat up as a streaky catch-and-shoot guy . . . RONNIE PRICE should emerge as Lillard's top backup, a role he's filled at numerous stops . . . Second-rounder WILL BARTON could emerge as a rotation player. He's a versatile wing who must prove he can play off the ball . . . SASHA PAVLOVIC will play both the two and three, and can still stroke it from long distance . . . NOLAN SMITH, a misstep of the last regime, is a fringe roster player . . . ELLIOT WILLIAMS, a defensive-minded combo guard, tore his Achilles in mid-September and expects to miss the entire season. FORWARDS: LaMARCUS ALDRIDGE had a couple of health scares over the past six months, but he should enter the season 100 percent. He's clearly Portland's best player . . . NICOLAS BATUM felt rightly disrespected by his secondary role in Portland. All signs point to a bigger role in 2012-13 . . . VICTOR CLAVER is an athletic scrapper who won't do much offensively even if he does get big minutes . . . JOEL FREELAND could become their first big man off the bench . . . JARED JEFFRIES is still relevant as a defensive specialist . . . The highlight of LUKE BABBITT's career might be that mention on Onion:Sportsdome. CENTERS: J.J. HICKSON is a black hole on offense and a liability on defense, but he can score and rebound, which is good enough to be the starting center in Portland's weak frontcourt . . . MEYERS LEONARD might not be quite ready for 30-plus minutes, but he'll have to learn on the fly due to Portland's lack of veteran bigs. He has some long-term upside as a 7-footer with some nice athleticism and touch inside 10 feet.
DETROIT: GUARDS: RODNEY STUCKEY was hampered by nagging injuries a year ago. If he's healthy, he's the best offensive weapon they have . . . BRANDON KNIGHT is more of a combo guard running the point. He can shoot, but doesn't bring much else to the table . . . With Ben Gordon gone, WILL BYNUM has a chance to regain a significant role . . . The Pistons' two second-round picks have a chance to carve out big roles. KIM ENGLISH has a skill set similar to Gordon's, capable of heating up and scoring in bunches . . . KHRIS MIDDLETON is more of a spot-up, catch-and-shoot threat only . . . Former No. 6 overall pick JONNY FLYNN agreed to a non-guaranteed contract in October, as he is no guarantee to even make this sorry roster. FORWARDS: TAYSHAUN PRINCE is still hanging on as the Pistons' best all-around player . . . JASON MAXIELL should be able to reclaim his starting spot early. He rebounds and takes up space . . . JONAS JEREBKO showed flashes but looked rusty in his first year back from an Achilles injury . . . 2011 2nd-rounder KYLE SINGLER has a good chance to step into the rotation after a solid year in Spain . . . COREY MAGGETTE was acquired in a Ben Gordon salary dump. He'll see limited minutes . . . AUSTIN DAYE regressed big-time last year. Unless he gets off to a hot start, he'll be on the outside looking in at the rotation . . . TERRENCE WILLIAMS is seeking a new lease on life, but could be too much of a head case to realize he's wasting his talent . . . The Pistons are counting down the days left on CHARLIE VILLANUEVA's contract (two years). CENTERS: GREG MONROE is a solid fit in Frank's system. He's not a great athlete, but he can score and move the ball on offense, as well as rebound . . . ANDRE DRUMMOND could one day be a perfect fit alongside Monroe. But for now, he'll watch and learn as a raw, boom-or-bust prospect . . . VIACHESLAV KRAVTSOV is an athletic big who will bring energy, but little offense in limited minutes.

*Trail Blazers-Pistons Preview* ===============================

By SANTOSH VENKATARAMAN STATS Senior Writer

Portland (6-6) at Detroit (3-10), 7:30 p.m. EDT

The Detroit Pistons have lost 12 straight to Western Conference opponents, but could be catching a break in their bid to end that skid.

The Portland Trail Blazers may be without All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge as they visit the Pistons on Monday night.

Aldridge, averaging 19.7 points and 5.8 rebounds, missed his first game Sunday when he sat out a 98-85 loss at Brooklyn with a stiff back. Portland (6-7) was competitive throughout a contest that was tied after three quarters before falling to 2-4 on the road.

"To be without our best player and come to Brooklyn and then have a chance down the stretch. Just to be in that position without LaMarcus says a lot about our team," rookie guard Damian Lillard said.

There is no word on Aldridge's status for Monday. He received pre-game treatment from the training staff and was in uniform, but rookie Meyers Leonard received his second start.

The big man averaged 24.8 points and 7.7 rebounds during a six-game win streak over the Pistons (3-11), who snapped that slide in the series with a 94-91 win Jan. 21 in the lone matchup last season. Aldridge led Portland with 25 points while Rodney Stuckey scored a game-high 28 for Detroit.

That was a rare victory for the Pistons over a West foe. Detroit went 5-13 against Western opponents in 2011-12 before losing their first eight to the other conference this season.

While Portland took positives from its Sunday defeat in the New York area, that wasn't the case for the Pistons in their 121-100 road loss the Knicks on Sunday. Detroit fell behind 64-44 at halftime and finished with 19 turnovers.

"How many minutes of defense did we play? I don't know, but I know it's not nearly good enough to do and we've got to take care of the ball," coach Lawrence Frank said.

Brandon Knight, who made the winning layup in Friday's 91-90 victory over Toronto, matched a season high with 21 points and Charlie Villanueva added a season-best 17.

None of that mattered as the Pistons allowed the Knicks to make 17 3-pointers - the second-highest total yielded by the club over the last 26 seasons.

"We have to give a better effort as far as not giving up those 3s," Knight said. "That's what they do best, that's what we came into the game trying to do. We did a poor job defensively."

Knight will get his first chance to match up with Lillard, who leads all rookies in scoring at 19.6 points per game. Lillard, thrust into a leadership role for Portland, had a poor effort Sunday with 13 points on 4-of-12 shooting.

"I think we have multiple leaders on the team," Lillard said. "I wouldn't say that I am the leader of the team. There are times when something needs to be said and I will say it, but we have multiple guys on our team that lead."

Wesley Matthews scored 20 points and J.J. Hickson had 19 and 10 rebounds for the Trail Blazers, who were outrebounded 48-34 without Aldridge.
