KEY GAME INFORMATION
HOUSTON: GUARDS: The postseason was a different story for JAMES HARDEN, but he was a dominant all-around performer during the past two regular seasons. He'll do the bulk of the ball-handling for the up-tempo Rockets . . . After looking for an upgrade during the offseason, it's back to PATRICK BEVERLEY at the point. He's the No. 4 or 5 option on offense, but his defense will keep him on the floor . . . There's little backcourt depth, so rookie NICK JOHNSON has a shot at the rotation. He's NBA-ready as a defender, but his offensive game is shaky . . . ISH SMITH will push for that back-up point guard job . . . ISAIAH CANAAN will have to shoot the lights out early to get a look in the rotation . . . FRANCISCO GARCIA is still here as a 3-and-D option. FORWARDS: TREVOR ARIZA slides into Chandler Parsons' old role, providing defense and three-point shooting. He has a chance for a career-best output offensively . . . The Rockets know they need an upgrade over TERRENCE JONES, but they struck out during the offseason. He's a hustle guy, but he's too much of a defensive liability at the 4-spot . . . After disappearing last season, DONATAS MOTIEJUNAS has a chance to play himself into a thin frontcourt rotation. He's a potential 7-foot floor spacer . . . JEFF ADRIEN will be a "little things" guy in the second unit . . . They wanted to leave CLINT CAPELA overseas, but he'll be in Houston. He might be the future at the 4-spot, but he's years away . . . KOSTAS PAPANIKOLAOU has potential as a versatile bench option. CENTERS: DWIGHT HOWARD looked healthy again and was, at times, dominant. His game still has obvious flaws, namely free-throw shooting and an inability to step away from the basket, but there's no reason he can't flirt with 20-10 nightly while being among the league leaders in blocks . . . Ex-Rocket JOEY DORSEY returns after a strong stint in Spain. He'll bring some muscle (and six fouls) behind Howard.
DENVER: GUARDS: TY LAWSON is the facilitator in Denver's up-tempo offense. Durability is a concern, as he missed 15-plus games for the third time in five career seasons during the 2013-14 campaign . . . ARRON AFFLALO is what the Nuggets need. He'll be a No. 3 scorer and, more importantly, gives them a big defensive upgrade . . . Denver can't afford to play RANDY FOYE so many minutes. He's a serviceable reserve, but they won't win games if he's playing 30-plus minutes . . . The Afflalo acquisition blocks him, but GARY HARRIS is tough-nosed on defense and a solid deep threat . . . NATE ROBINSON might unseat Foye for the sixth-man role by midseason, but first he'll have to work his way back from a torn ACL . . . Combo guard ERICK GREEN will pick up garbage-time minutes. FORWARDS: KENNETH FARIED is one of the few bright spots in Denver. He can't generate his own offense, but he's effective filling lanes and picking up garbage points in this system . . . If he's ever 100 percent healthy again, DANILO GALLINARI will be the go-to scorer on this team. But he's a question mark after missing all of last season with a torn ACL . . . WILSON CHANDLER won't be relied on as heavily this season, but he's going to get major minutes as a floor spacer who can play the 2-guard or either forward spot . . . Stretch-4 DARRELL ARTHUR is a solid rotation guy when he's shooting well, but he was laying bricks last season . . . QUINCY MILLER has intriguing athleticism, but remains a raw project . . . Even if he wasn't coming off a torn ACL, J.J. HICKSON would not make this rotation. CENTERS: TIMOFEY MOZGOV may have grabbed the lead in this center-by-committee group with his strong finish to last season . . . A stress fracture cost JaVALE McGEE his chance to secure a full-time role last season. The tantalizing, but consistently disappointing, big man should make the rotation, but has an uphill battle to earn minutes . . . JUSUF NURKIC is a high-upside project as a 7-footer with a legit NBA offensive skill set.

*Rockets-Nuggets Preview* =========================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Houston (42-20) at Denver (22-40), 9:00 p.m. EDT

After his sensational effort helped the Houston Rockets avoid their longest losing streak of the season, James Harden will try to assist in turning around his team's fortune on the road.

As they open a four-game trip, Harden and the Rockets look to avoid their worst road slide in two years Saturday night against a Denver Nuggets team that hasn't won two straight at home in two months.

Houston (42-20) had been riding a five-game winning streak before falling 104-96 at Atlanta on Tuesday with Harden suspended and losing 102-100 at home to Memphis in his return Wednesday.

Harden made certain the Rockets wouldn't drop three in a row for the first time this season, finishing with 38 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists in Friday's 103-93 home win over Detroit for his third triple-double.

"It was all about having fun, especially when your back is up against the wall after losing two tough games in a row," Harden said. "You've got to get a win. So we go out there and have fun and execute and we play together."

Houston moved into a virtual tie with Portland for the Western Conference's No. 3 seed as it begins a road swing that includes dates with the Trail Blazers, Utah and the Los Angeles Clippers after facing the Nuggets.

The Rockets head into the trip fourth with 105.2 points per game on the road, but they've averaged just 97.0 while hitting 28.5 percent from 3-point range in three straight defeats away from home.

Houston hasn't lost four straight road games since a six-game skid from Jan. 9-19, 2013. Behind Harden's 41 points and 10 assists, it snapped a four-game losing streak in Denver with a 115-111 overtime win Dec. 17.

Harden went 18 for 21 from the free-throw line in that contest, and the Rockets are 22-4 when he gets to the stripe at least 10 times. The All-Star also had a triple-double with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in a 108-96 home win Dec. 13.

"It's going to be tough on our defense," Denver forward Darrell Arthur said. "Then we have the one-on-one task with James Harden. He's playing like an MVP candidate right now. We have to make him take tough shots. He's going to make tough shots, but it's better than giving him easy shots."

Denver (22-40) had allowed 90.0 points on 39.9 percent shooting in winning two straight after interim coach Melvin Hunt replaced Brian Shaw before letting San Antonio make 54.4 percent in Friday's 120-111 defeat.

Ty Lawson finished with 23 points and nine assists after going scoreless in Wednesday's 100-85 win at Minnesota. He's averaged 20.4 points in his last nine matchups with Houston and has totaled 28 assists in two this season.

Kenneth Faried has been rejuvenated under Hunt, averaging 17.3 points and 12.7 rebounds in three games since putting up 5.2 and 6.0 over his previous six. He appeared to be fine despite holding his right knee after a fall late in the fourth quarter Friday.

Denver snapped a 10-game losing streak at Pepsi Center with Tuesday's 106-95 win over Milwaukee.

Houston's Terrence Jones strained his right hip in the second quarter Friday but returned and finished with 17 points. He's averaged 20.2 on 64.6 percent shooting in his last five games, and missed both earlier games against Denver.
