|
| | | LA CLIPPERS: GUARDS: Head coach Doc Rivers pretty much hands the offense over to CHRIS PAUL, who is very much in his prime. He has a chance to lead the NBA in assists and steals again . . . He was banged up during the regular season, but J.J. REDICK fit nicely next to Paul when healthy . . . JAMAL CRAWFORD will reprise his sixth-man role. He can still fill it up, though he'll lose a bit of playing time if Redick stays healthy . . . JORDAN FARMAR is still hanging around L.A., this time to back up Paul. He'll run point for the second unit . . . C.J. WILCOX is arguably the best shooter in the rookie class, but he's not guaranteed to grab a rotation spot. FORWARDS: He still has flaws in his game, but BLAKE GRIFFIN continues to evolve into a more complete player. His improved shooting, both mid-range and at the line, is a testament to that . . . The Clippers failed to land an upgrade at small forward, so MATT BARNES might be the starter by default again. He's a good glue guy, though his streaky shooting is a frustration . . . The Clippers retained GLEN DAVIS in free agency. "Big Baby" can do some damage against opposing second units during the regular season. CENTERS: Rivers made DeANDRE JORDAN into a full-time player last season. He's a rim protector and rebounder who has made some strides defending in space, but there's a reason the Clippers spent on another big man . . . SPENCER HAWES gives them a different look at the 5-spot, and he can play alongside Jordan as a floor-spacer as well. | | DENVER: GUARDS: TY LAWSON is the facilitator in Denver's up-tempo offense. Durability is a concern, as he missed 15-plus games for the third time in five career seasons during the 2013-14 campaign . . . ARRON AFFLALO is what the Nuggets need. He'll be a No. 3 scorer and, more importantly, gives them a big defensive upgrade . . . Denver can't afford to play RANDY FOYE so many minutes. He's a serviceable reserve, but they won't win games if he's playing 30-plus minutes . . . The Afflalo acquisition blocks him, but GARY HARRIS is tough-nosed on defense and a solid deep threat . . . NATE ROBINSON might unseat Foye for the sixth-man role by midseason, but first he'll have to work his way back from a torn ACL . . . Combo guard ERICK GREEN will pick up garbage-time minutes. FORWARDS: KENNETH FARIED is one of the few bright spots in Denver. He can't generate his own offense, but he's effective filling lanes and picking up garbage points in this system . . . If he's ever 100 percent healthy again, DANILO GALLINARI will be the go-to scorer on this team. But he's a question mark after missing all of last season with a torn ACL . . . WILSON CHANDLER won't be relied on as heavily this season, but he's going to get major minutes as a floor spacer who can play the 2-guard or either forward spot . . . Stretch-4 DARRELL ARTHUR is a solid rotation guy when he's shooting well, but he was laying bricks last season . . . QUINCY MILLER has intriguing athleticism, but remains a raw project . . . Even if he wasn't coming off a torn ACL, J.J. HICKSON would not make this rotation. CENTERS: TIMOFEY MOZGOV may have grabbed the lead in this center-by-committee group with his strong finish to last season . . . A stress fracture cost JaVALE McGEE his chance to secure a full-time role last season. The tantalizing, but consistently disappointing, big man should make the rotation, but has an uphill battle to earn minutes . . . JUSUF NURKIC is a high-upside project as a 7-footer with a legit NBA offensive skill set. |

*Clippers-Nuggets Preview* ==========================
By JACK CASSIDY STATS Writer
Los Angeles (18-7) at Denver (10-15), 9:00 p.m. EDT
It's been a streaky season so far for the Denver Nuggets, whose current stretch is definitely not a good one.
The Nuggets seek only their second win in more than two weeks Friday night at home against the Los Angeles Clippers.
Denver (10-15) opened the season with seven losses in its first nine games before a 7-1 stretch put the Nuggets one game over .500 after a win at Utah on Dec. 1.
However, they've followed that surge with seven losses over their previous eight after a 115-111 overtime setback against Houston on Wednesday. While Denver limited the Rockets to 41.2 percent shooting, they attempted 48 free throws, hitting 37 of them.
"We defended, we scrapped," coach Brian Shaw said. "We couldn't keep them off the free throw line. I'm proud of the guys, the way they played. These kind of losses I can stomach a little bit better."
The Nuggets are one of the worst defensive teams in the NBA, allowing 105.0 points per game, and have relied primarily on an offense that is averaging 103.0. They are 9-2 when limiting opponents to 101 or fewer, although several of those victories have come against struggling teams like Detroit, Miami, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Jazz.
"Our team, we have to generate offense on team plays with good player movement, good ball movement, penetration, getting into the lane and causing their defense to react to what we're doing," Shaw said. "I'm fine with that because that's what we have."
Los Angeles (18-7) enters this contest coming off back-to-back wins, rebounding from its first consecutive defeats of the season Dec. 12-13. Blake Griffin scored 31 points and DeAndre Jordan has 23 rebounds in Wednesday's 102-100 victory over Indiana.
Jordan's rebounding performance marked a season high for the seventh-year center and was one shy of a career best set March 31 against Minnesota.
"My job for our team is to be a defender, rebounder, shot blocker, and to just be the back line for us," he said. "That means controlling the paint, grabbing all the loose balls and limiting teams to one shot."
The Clippers sit among NBA leaders with assists on 63.1 percent of their field goals, and that sort of ball movement begins with Chris Paul, who is averaging 9.7 assists.
Paul, however, has failed to reach double-digit assists in four games. Another single-digit assist performance would mark the fourth time since joining the Clippers in 2011 that he has recorded fewer than 10 in five or more consecutive games.
Whether Paul or other key members of the rotation will log their regular playing time is another issue. Including Friday's matchup, the Clippers play eight games over 13 days.
"There's just a lot of games and there's a lot of travel," coach Doc Rivers said. "It's just hard. So we're just going to watch our guys. I'm going to be very cautious."
The Clippers and Nuggets split last season's four-game series, with Los Angeles taking the most recent meeting 117-105 at Staples Center on April 15.
