KEY GAME INFORMATION
MEMPHIS: GUARDS: The Grizzlies will scale back MIKE CONLEY's minutes a bit. He's a quality starting point guard, but seemed to lose some pep as last season wore on . . . TONY ALLEN figures to see more playing time now that O.J. Mayo is gone. He's an outstanding defender who will be the fifth option on offense . . . JERRYD BAYLESS figures to become the new sixth man and Allen platoon partner. He'll also spell Conley at the point, leading to solid minutes for the combo guard . . . Second-year man JOSH SELBY has a chance for a rotation spot after starring in the Summer League. He has big offensive upside . . . WAYNE ELLINGTON seems like an emergency plan for the second unit . . . This is likely a redshirt year for talented, but erratic, rookie TONY WROTEN. FORWARDS: RUDY GAY is going to lead the Grizzlies in touches and shots. He's not shy about looking for iso situations . . . ZACH RANDOLPH had trouble getting back into the flow after his knee injury. It's always been a fragile balance with Z-Bo, and he could be an odd man out going forward . . . MARREESE SPEIGHTS should be the offensive focal point of the bench unit as their sixth man . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER is a versatile defensive piece who will see solid minutes off the bench. He's a non-factor offensively, though . . . DARRELL ARTHUR suffered a non-displaced fractured in his leg in late September, and will not likely be ready when the season begins. A rising young big, his role will depend on when his athleticism comes back. CENTERS: The Grizzlies are at their best when MARC GASOL is getting touches and shots on the offensive end. Whether or not Gay and Randolph are willing to share is a concern, but Gasol has to be aggressive when the ball is in his hands . . . HAMED HADDADI will continue to play limited minutes off the bench.
DENVER: GUARDS: TY LAWSON has emerged as the closest thing to a No. 1 option on this team, and despite his size, he's proven capable of playing full-time minutes. He'll continue to post big numbers in an up-tempo system that suits him perfectly . . . ANDRE MILLER will both back up Lawson and share the court with him at times (though Andre Iguodala figures to play a lot of two this season). The steady veteran is one of the league's most underrated sixth men . . . It's a bit surprising that EVAN FOURNIER is making the jump to the NBA this year. His size and skill combo will be nice on the wing one day, but he's unlikely to contribute this year . . . JULYAN STONE will be out until January after offseason hip surgery, but he should be Lawson's main backup upon his return. FORWARDS: DANILO GALLINARI is their most complete offensive player. If healthy, he's capable of being a 20-PPG scorer . . . ANDRE IGUODALA should enjoy the much faster pace Denver plays at. He'll see full-time minutes between both wing spots . . . KENNETH FARIED isn't a skilled big, but he's a high-energy guy who can get his own points off offensive rebounds . . . WILSON CHANDLER could end up leading their second unit in minutes and points . . . COREY BREWER is a front office favorite. He'll stay in the rotation as a defensive presence/glue guy . . . JORDAN HAMILTON could break into the rotation. He's one-dimensional, but has the offensive skills . . . Denver will try to solve the ANTHONY RANDOLPH riddle. Don't expect it to happen this year. CENTERS: Denver is all-in on internet punchline JaVALE McGEE. They'll give the athletic 7-footer every chance to become the star they think he can be. Whether the flaky McGee can capitalize is questionable . . . TIMOFEY MOZGOV is one of the NBA's best screeners, but his touches will be limited . . . KOSTA KOUFOS has quietly developed into a usable rotation player, but he might be squeezed out of minutes.

*Grizzlies-Nuggets Preview* ===========================

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer

Memphis (14-5) at Denver (11-12), 10:30 p.m. EDT

The Memphis Grizzlies may not be very jolly, but they're seemingly in a giving mood this holiday season.

The Grizzlies will likely need to take better care of the ball if they're going to avoid a three-game slide and win consecutive road meetings against the Denver Nuggets for the first time Friday night.

Although they still have one of the best records in the league, the Grizzlies (14-5) have cooled off somewhat, losing three of five this month thanks in part to sloppy play. They're averaging 17.8 turnovers in that stretch after committing 14.1 during a 12-2 start.

The turnovers have been particularly concerning while losing the last two games as Memphis has been held to its lowest scoring outputs of the season.

The Grizzlies coughed the ball up 16 times in Saturday's 93-83 loss to Atlanta before adding one more in an 82-80 defeat at Phoenix, surrendering the decisive basket with 0.5 seconds left.

"That's our game - taking care of the ball, executing and getting up and down on the court and that's what we're not doing right now," said forward Zach Randolph, who's totaled 36 points and 23 rebounds the past two games. "These last two games we haven't been doing that."

Turnovers also plagued the Nuggets (11-12) on Wednesday, when they had 19 in a 108-105 loss to Minnesota to end a 2-3 road trip. Still, Ty Lawson had a chance at a game-tying 3 at the buzzer, but missed.

"We just didn't play an intelligent game," coach George Karl said. "To overcome those three areas of fundamentals and to have a shot to tie is pretty impressive."

That was the sixth loss in nine games for Denver, but only one of those contests came at home. Karl's team has won five of its league-low six games at Pepsi Center, averaging 106.0 points.

Kenneth Faried is averaging 15.0 points and 11.8 rebounds at home, compared to his 11.5 and 9.4 totals on the road. The second-year power forward hit 10 of 16 field goals and finished with 26 points and 14 boards against the Timberwolves.

"We lost. Any time we lose, it's a terrible game," Faried said. "You can't put stats on that or what you did well because it's a team effort."

He had 13 points and rebounds while matched up against Randolph in a 97-92 win at Memphis on Nov. 19.

Danilo Gallinari, who had a season-high 26 points in that meeting, scored 24 on 9 of 13 from the floor - 4 of 5 from beyond the arc - Wednesday. He shot 3 for 14 from long range over the previous four games, averaging 13.8 points.

The Grizzlies overcame 21 turnovers and Rudy Gay's 3-for-13 shooting performance in a 94-91 win in their most recent visit to Denver on March 11. That was just Memphis' fourth victory in 32 all-time road games against the Nuggets.
