KEY GAME INFORMATION
LA CLIPPERS: LAST SEASON: 48-34, lost 4-2 to Golden State in Western Conference first round.
COACH: Doc Rivers (seventh season with Clippers, 307-185; 21st season overall, 894-658).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: F Kawhi Leonard (30.5 ppg with Toronto), F Paul George (23.7 with Oklahoma City), G Patrick Beverley (7.6), G Landry Shamet (9.1), C Ivica Zubac (8.9).
KEY LOSSES: G Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, F Danilo Gallinari, F Wilson Chandler, G-F Garrett Temple, G Sindarius Thornwell, G Tyrone Wallace.
KEY ADDITIONS: Leonard, George.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: It's all about newcomers Leonard and George. They'll be the top two options on offense. Leonard is coming off a season in which he led Toronto to its first NBA championship (and earned his second ring). Leonard returning home was contingent upon pairing with George, also an LA-area native. George, who finished third in MVP voting last season, can guard nearly any position while being a huge scoring threat. Lou Williams and Montrezl Harrell, the NBA's top bench-scoring duo last season, will get starter-level minutes again.
OUTLOOK: No more watching other teams go deep in the playoffs. The NBA's balance of power has shifted to the Clippers, who have never advanced beyond the second round let alone won a championship. All that's expected to change behind Leonard and George, both regarded as two of the best two-way players in the league. The Clippers had to give up talented veteran Gallinari and star-in-the-making Gilgeous-Alexander, but they kept Harrell, Williams and re-signed Beverley, whose sole job will be using his tenacious D to keep others from scoring. The Clippers are favorites to win it all, a stunning shift for a franchise that has spent much of its existence as a punch line.
DALLAS: LAST SEASON: 33-49, finished tied for 12th in Western Conference.
COACH: Rick Carlisle (12th season with Mavericks, 470-416; 18th season overall, 751-627).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Luka Doncic (21.2 ppg), G Delon Wright (12.2 with Memphis), G-F Justin Jackson (8.2), F Kristaps Porzingis (sidelined by knee injury), C Dwight Powell (10.6).
KEY LOSSES: F Dirk Nowitzki, G Devin Harris, C Salah Mejri.
KEY ADDITIONS: Wright, G Seth Curry, F Isaiah Roby.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: The world will be watching the Euro pair of Doncic and Porzingis, literally. The Mavericks are headliners internationally now that the 20-year-old rookie of the year from Slovenia and the 7-foot-3 Latvian are finally getting to play together. Dallas held Porzingis out for the last two months last season after the blockbuster trade that brought him from New York, even though he could have played. Their debut together is even more intriguing since it's Dallas' first season without Nowitzki, the German superstar who retired after setting an NBA record by playing all 21 seasons with the same franchise. The biggest question is who among the role players will emerge. Keep an eye on Wright. The Mavericks liked him in the 2015 draft. AD
OUTLOOK: The Mavericks wanted to sign a significant piece in free agency after the trading-deadline addition of Porzingis, who had just been named a 2018 All-Star before the knee injury that sidelined him for 20 months. They had to settle on Wright as a restricted free agent in a sign-and-trade with Memphis, so Dallas will lean heavily on Doncic and Porzingis while trying to get back to the playoffs after missing three straight seasons. It's the longest stretch without the postseason for the franchise since it was among the worst in sports coming out of the 1990s. It won't be easy in the West. The Mavericks will exceed expectations if they contend for a playoff spot.
PREVIEW
Porzingis close as Mavs get set to face Clippers

After missing 10 games with right knee soreness, Kristaps Porzingis could return Tuesday when the Dallas Mavericks host the Los Angeles Clippers.

"The way I'm feeling, I don't see why there should be any hurdles," said Porzingis after participating in a full practice Sunday, according to the Dallas Morning News. "But you never know, so I'm just putting in the work, making sure the knee is strong, the leg is strong."

The 7-foot-3 Porzingis averaged 17.3 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.1. blocks before being sidelined.

"We have (Monday) and then we'll see where we are for Tuesday, but (Sunday) was good," said Dallas coach Rick Carlisle, according to the team's website. "He was out there the whole time he competed. We did some live stuff, which he was in, so good stuff."

The Mavericks, who were 6-4 during Porzingis' absence, have now won four consecutive games, the latest a 120-112 home victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday. Luka Doncic converted a career-high eight 3-pointers and scored 35 points with eight rebounds and seven assists for Dallas. Doncic is one triple-double shy of tying Jason Kidd's career club mark of 21.

Doncic took 12 3-point attempts and hit 11 of 23 shots from the floor. He has averaged 28.9 points, 9.7 rebounds and nine assists per game. He was third in the league in scoring and assists through Sunday's games.

Tim Hardaway Jr. had 29 points, while Seth Curry added 16 off the bench for the Mavericks against the Blazers.

Kawhi Leonard topped 30 or more points for the fifth straight game, scoring 39 to lift the Clippers over the host New Orleans Pelicans 133-130 on Saturday. Leonard, who is averaging 36 points per game in the past five contests, also had six boards, six assists and five steals.

"Making shots. It's simple as that. Making shots," said Leonard told reporters afterward after making 15 of 28 attempts. "My teammates are being more aggressive, being assertive and that's it."

Lou Williams, whose 3-pointer with 31.6 seconds remaining was the difference, contributed 32 points and Montrezl Harrell scored 24 off the bench for the Clippers, winners of three straight and five of their last six. The Clippers prevailed by rallying in the second half after allowing the Pelicans to tie a franchise record with 80 points in the first half.

Paul George missed his fifth consecutive game with a strained left hamstring. George isn't expected to return against the Mavericks, but Clippers coach Doc Rivers hopes the six-time All-Star forward can play before the end of the current five-game road swing that began in New Orleans.

"He's coming along," Rivers said, according to the Los Angeles Times. "Hopefully at some point he'll rejoin us on the trip, but right now we just felt it'd be better for him to stay back and just keep getting treatment."

The Clippers captured a 114-99 decision on Nov. 26 at Dallas. Leonard scored 28 points and George finished with 26 and a career-best six steals. Doncic managed 22 points on 4-of-14 shooting, eight rebounds and six assists. He committed seven turnovers.
