KEY GAME INFORMATION
MEMPHIS: GUARDS: So much for head coach David Joerger picking up the tempo. MIKE CONLEY has become a much better half-court player, a requirement on this team . . . COURTNEY LEE will likely be the offensive side of their 2-guard platoon, as he was late last season . . . He lost some minutes late last season, but there's still a part-time role for TONY ALLEN . . . VINCE CARTER will take over Mike Miller's old role, a floor spacer at both wing spots . . . The Grizzlies blocked NICK CALATHES' move back to Europe to keep him around for point guard depth. He is suspended for the first 13 games of the season . . . JORDAN ADAMS comes from UCLA with a strong statistical profile. He might not break into the rotation as a rookie, though . . . BENO UDRIH bought himself another season with strong postseason play. FORWARDS: ZACH RANDOLPH remains the go-to scorer in Memphis. And he's playing for what might be his last big NBA payday . . . TAYSHAUN PRINCE has faded fast, and his expiring contract might be his greatest asset right now . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER returns after missing most of last season with a stress fracture in his foot. He'll have to battle his way back into the rotation after the acquisition of Vince Carter . . . Second-rounder JARNELL STOKES has a football player's build and is quick around the basket, but he could be looking at a season spent mostly in the D-League . . . JON LEUER is still doing Jon Leuer things, shooting well from long range and grabbing occasional rebounds. CENTERS: MARC GASOL will earn a max contract if he keeps playing at this level. Along with very good defense, he's become a valuable facilitator for this team on the offensive end of the court . . . KOSTA KOUFOS is one of the league's better back-up centers. He fits well in the Grizzlies' slow-tempo system.
DALLAS: GUARDS: MONTA ELLIS will be the Mavs' lead guard again, taking on even more ball-handling responsibilities with their black hole at point guard. In his first season in Dallas, he proved to be the perfect fit running pick-and-rolls in head coach Rick Carlisle's system . . . The Mavericks are in trouble if they have to rely on RAYMOND FELTON, a fringe rotation-caliber player even in his brief 'prime,' but he might end up the starter by default . . . JAMEER NELSON's poor defense makes him difficult to pair with Ellis, but offensively he's the best option . . . DEVIN HARRIS is a superior defender and a dangerous offensive player, but the questions are durability and how well he fits alongside Ellis . . . GAL MEKEL struggled offensively, but his defense is going to earn him minutes at both guard spots. He's a borderline rotation guy. FORWARDS: DIRK NOWITZKI came back on a discounted deal, but at age 36 he still has plenty left in the tank. He's a legit All-Star-caliber player . . . Dallas pried CHANDLER PARSONS from Houston, giving the team someone to run the floor with Ellis and shoot some corner threes in the half-court set. He figures to have a slightly smaller role than he did with the Rockets though . . . Last season in Utah, RICHARD JEFFERSON reestablished himself as a rotation player by adding a consistent three-point shot . . . AL-FAROUQ AMINU gives the Mavs an energy guy who can play both forward spots . . . JAE CROWDER will have to fight to keep his spot in the rotation. He has yet to put it together offensively and he needs to add a three-point shot . . . GREG SMITH won't make a significant contribution unless his knee proves healthy. CENTERS: Durability is an underlying issue, but the Mavs were thrilled to bring TYSON CHANDLER back into the fold. He'll be much happier in Carlisle's defensive system than he was in Mike Woodson's switch-everything approach . . . BRANDAN WRIGHT will play fewer minutes behind Chandler as an extra rim protector and rebounder.

*Grizzlies-Mavericks Preview* =============================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

Memphis (31-12) at Dallas (30-15), 8:30 p.m. EDT

The Memphis Grizzlies again look like one of the NBA's best teams since Zach Randolph returned from injury, though he was unable to help them knock off the Dallas Mavericks last week.

They'll try to avenge that loss and hand the Mavericks a season-worst third straight defeat Tuesday night in Dallas.

After a 21-4 start that was the second-best in the league, Memphis (32-12) dropped seven off 11 from Dec. 19-Jan. 9 with Randolph missing nine games in that stretch due to a sore knee. The Grizzlies have since won seven of eight with Randolph averaging 20.4 points and 13.8 rebounds while shooting 59.4 percent.

Randolph, who has double-doubles in 14 of his last 15, averages 10.6 points in the paint for Memphis, which leads the NBA in that category. The Grizzlies are averaging 51.3 points in the paint over the last eight contests.

Randolph scored 18 of his 24 points in the first half as Memphis built a 19-point halftime lead in Monday's 103-94 win over Orlando.

"He got it going early, and even played 15 minutes straight. Then still got mad when I took him out," coach Dave Joerger said. "I mean, he was rolling. The guy's fantastic."

Mike Conley's status is uncertain after he sat out the fourth quarter with a sprained left wrist.

"I just wanted to rest it," said Conley, who is averaging 17.4 points and shooting 41.9 percent from 3-point range, both career bests. "It was painful in the second half. We'll see how it goes."

Randolph has averaged 21.8 points in his last four meetings with Dallas and scored 18 with 15 rebounds in a 103-95 home loss on Jan. 19. Dirk Nowitzki scored the Mavericks' final eight points in the last 1:51 and had 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting - the fourth time in five matchups he finished with 20-plus on 53.8 percent or better shooting. Dallas was 10 of 25 from beyond the arc while Memphis was 3 of 22, helping neutralize the Grizzlies' 58-26 advantage in the paint.

Nowitzki is 12 of 26 from 3-point range in five games since resting in a 114-107 loss at Denver on Jan. 14. He is shooting 44.1 percent from deep at home compared to 31.3 on the road.

Memphis claimed a 114-105 home win on Dec. 9 behind 30 points by Marc Gasol. Monta Ellis was 1 of 11 with a season-low two points for Dallas. He has shot 38.1 percent or worse in eight of his last 10 meetings.

While Ellis and Nowitzki combined for 60 points Sunday at New Orleans, Dallas (30-15) suffered a second straight defeat 109-106. The Mavericks, who have shot 37.8 percent in the fourth quarter of losses to Chicago and New Orleans, have yet to lose three straight.

"Today we're not in a good place because we've dropped two games in a row and haven't played well," coach Rick Carlisle said. "They're (Memphis) going to be very motivated tomorrow coming in here after we beat them back at their place. We just need to pick it up."

Tony Allen, who leads Memphis with 2.0 steals per game, didn't play Monday and is day to day after suffering a sprained ankle Saturday against Philadelphia.

The Grizzlies have lost 22 of 26 in Dallas and are 7-30 all-time there.
