KEY GAME INFORMATION
OKLAHOMA CITY: GUARDS: Everything should be a full go with RUSSELL WESTBROOK. His attacking style of play will always carry some injury risk, but he hasn't lost any explosiveness to this point . . . REGGIE JACKSON wants to start, but it's a question of whether the Thunder can survive defensively with him and Westbrook in a small backcourt. Jackson is certainly their second-best offensive guard . . . ANTHONY MORROW can flat-out shoot. He can't do anything else, but that floor spacing might be enough to get him 20 minutes per night . . . If the light doesn't turn on, JEREMY LAMB will be on the outside of this rotation. FORWARDS: Once he returns from his foot injury in late November, it should be the same old story for KEVIN DURANT, the reigning NBA MVP . . . He still struggles defensively in space, but SERGE IBAKA will be right there among the league leaders in blocks again. Throw in a reliable mid-range game, and more offensive responsibility with Durant out, and he's a fringe All-Star . . . NICK COLLISON takes charges, but doesn't do much else . . . Rookie MITCH McGARY could be pushing Collison for minutes by midseason . . . ANDRE ROBERSON could get another handful of starts as a defensive presence on the wing, but he rarely plays 20-plus minutes . . . PERRY JONES is on the fringe of this roster. CENTERS: Is this it? Could this be the season that the Thunder finally stop playing KENDRICK PERKINS? . . . STEVEN ADAMS came on strong late last season and is probably already better than Perk. He can defend and moves the ball offensively.
DALLAS: GUARDS: MONTA ELLIS will be the Mavs' lead guard again, taking on even more ball-handling responsibilities with their black hole at point guard. In his first season in Dallas, he proved to be the perfect fit running pick-and-rolls in head coach Rick Carlisle's system . . . The Mavericks are in trouble if they have to rely on RAYMOND FELTON, a fringe rotation-caliber player even in his brief 'prime,' but he might end up the starter by default . . . JAMEER NELSON's poor defense makes him difficult to pair with Ellis, but offensively he's the best option . . . DEVIN HARRIS is a superior defender and a dangerous offensive player, but the questions are durability and how well he fits alongside Ellis . . . GAL MEKEL struggled offensively, but his defense is going to earn him minutes at both guard spots. He's a borderline rotation guy. FORWARDS: DIRK NOWITZKI came back on a discounted deal, but at age 36 he still has plenty left in the tank. He's a legit All-Star-caliber player . . . Dallas pried CHANDLER PARSONS from Houston, giving the team someone to run the floor with Ellis and shoot some corner threes in the half-court set. He figures to have a slightly smaller role than he did with the Rockets though . . . Last season in Utah, RICHARD JEFFERSON reestablished himself as a rotation player by adding a consistent three-point shot . . . AL-FAROUQ AMINU gives the Mavs an energy guy who can play both forward spots . . . JAE CROWDER will have to fight to keep his spot in the rotation. He has yet to put it together offensively and he needs to add a three-point shot . . . GREG SMITH won't make a significant contribution unless his knee proves healthy. CENTERS: Durability is an underlying issue, but the Mavs were thrilled to bring TYSON CHANDLER back into the fold. He'll be much happier in Carlisle's defensive system than he was in Mike Woodson's switch-everything approach . . . BRANDAN WRIGHT will play fewer minutes behind Chandler as an extra rim protector and rebounder.

*Thunder-Mavericks Preview* ===========================

By JEFF BARTL STATS Senior Writer

Oklahoma City (15-16) at Dallas (21-10), 7:30 p.m. EDT

Oklahoma City's initial stretch without Kevin Durant didn't go so well, but the strong play of Russell Westbrook is easing the Thunder through their star's absence this time around.

They seek a third straight victory Sunday night as they visit a Dallas Mavericks team that's becoming more comfortable with Rajon Rondo running the point.

Oklahoma City started 5-12 as Durant recovered from a right foot fracture he suffered in the offseason, and Westbrook missed 14 of those games with a broken hand. The Thunder (15-16) won seven of nine when Durant returned to the lineup, but that stretch included a loss at Golden State on Dec. 18 when he left in the second quarter with a sprained right ankle.

Durant has been out since, but Westbrook has averaged 32.6 points during a 3-2 stretch after netting 29 in three quarters of Friday's 98-75 home win over Charlotte.

"We did a good job of locking in on our task at hand and took care of business," Westbrook said. "We just played our game, did a good job of playing at a good pace."

Serge Ibaka added 13 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks for his first double-double in 11 games.

"He's been rebounding and blocking shots much better," coach Scott Brooks said. "He's played well. We just have to keep the pick-and-roll defense on with him. That's where he's really picked it up."

Durant returned to practice Saturday but offered no timetable for his return. Brooks has been impressed with his team's improvement, especially with Durant out, and now the Thunder can reach .500 for the first time this season.

"We've been solid for a while now," Brooks said. "We just continue to get better month by month."

Dallas (21-10) has split four games since acquiring Rondo from Boston, but he had his best night since the trade in Friday's 102-98 win over the Los Angeles Lakers.

Rondo scored a season-high 21 points - his previous high was 20 in the Celtics' loss to the Thunder on Nov. 12 - while hitting 10 of 17 from the floor and adding eight rebounds with seven assists.

"Just getting a lot more comfortable," Rondo said. "Coach (Rick Carlisle) just told me to try to get in the paint. I try to take what the defense gives me. We basically just have to communicate on the floor. The game is still the same."

Dirk Nowitzki had 14 points to pass Elvin Hayes for eighth on the NBA's all-time scoring list with 27,322. He's been playing through a stomach ailment recently.

"It's been up and down for last couple of weeks so had to get it checked out," Nowitzki said. "Just hope to feel better soon."

Dallas gradually is getting better adjusting to the roster shake-up, and Nowitzki is becoming more impressed with his newest teammate.

"He's starting to run a great show," Nowitzki said of Rondo, averaging a league-high 10.5 assists. "He's starting to understand when he needs to be aggressive, get in the lane, when he needs to shoot, and he still has obviously the great passing gene that you need as a great point guard. I think he looks pretty sharp, and we have to keep it going and get used to each other even more as the competition gets stiffer."

Rondo likely will draw the assignment of guarding Westbrook, who has averaged 29.7 points in his last three in Dallas.

These teams haven't met since March 25, when Nowitzki scored 32 as the Mavericks ended a five-game home losing streak to the Thunder - including playoffs - with a 128-119 overtime victory.
