|
| | | LA LAKERS: GUARDS: At 36 and coming off multiple injuries, it seems unlikely that vintage KOBE BRYANT will ever return. Still, he'll get to the line enough to be among the league's scoring leaders . . . JEREMY LIN will start and be useful when his streaky shot gets hot . . . NICK YOUNG demanded the Lakers re-sign him, and what Swaggy P wants, Swaggy P gets (after L.A. struck out on every free agent). He'll miss the first couple weeks of the season as he recovers from thumb surgery . . . XAVIER HENRY will try to establish himself as a deep threat off the bench . . . JORDAN CLARKSON is the kind of big guard they've paired with Bryant over the years. He could be a year or two away from contributing . . . STEVE NASH is out for the season with a back injury. He's likely played his last game as a member of the Lakers. FORWARDS: You know it's been a rough offseason when CARLOS BOOZER, who no contending team wanted, is your prize. He's still a zero at the defensive end, but Boozer can shoot from mid-range and could see more minutes in a thin L.A. frontcourt . . . WESLEY JOHNSON gives them a spot-up shooter on the wing who brings some defensive versatility . . . They'll probably pair Boozer and teenager JULIUS RANDLE together often. The rookie has drawn comparisons to Zach Randolph . . . RYAN KELLY is a serviceable stretch-4 for the second unit. CENTERS: JORDAN HILL will see time at the 4 and 5 spots. His per-minute rates are strong, but his stamina is not . . . C'mon, who doesn't like ED DAVIS? . . . The Lakers will likely use Boozer, Hill and Davis as undersized centers, because entering the year they only have lead-footed ROBERT SACRE as a true 5. He's not a candidate to play more than 20 minutes per night. | | DALLAS: GUARDS: MONTA ELLIS will be the Mavs' lead guard again, taking on even more ball-handling responsibilities with their black hole at point guard. In his first season in Dallas, he proved to be the perfect fit running pick-and-rolls in head coach Rick Carlisle's system . . . The Mavericks are in trouble if they have to rely on RAYMOND FELTON, a fringe rotation-caliber player even in his brief 'prime,' but he might end up the starter by default . . . JAMEER NELSON's poor defense makes him difficult to pair with Ellis, but offensively he's the best option . . . DEVIN HARRIS is a superior defender and a dangerous offensive player, but the questions are durability and how well he fits alongside Ellis . . . GAL MEKEL struggled offensively, but his defense is going to earn him minutes at both guard spots. He's a borderline rotation guy. FORWARDS: DIRK NOWITZKI came back on a discounted deal, but at age 36 he still has plenty left in the tank. He's a legit All-Star-caliber player . . . Dallas pried CHANDLER PARSONS from Houston, giving the team someone to run the floor with Ellis and shoot some corner threes in the half-court set. He figures to have a slightly smaller role than he did with the Rockets though . . . Last season in Utah, RICHARD JEFFERSON reestablished himself as a rotation player by adding a consistent three-point shot . . . AL-FAROUQ AMINU gives the Mavs an energy guy who can play both forward spots . . . JAE CROWDER will have to fight to keep his spot in the rotation. He has yet to put it together offensively and he needs to add a three-point shot . . . GREG SMITH won't make a significant contribution unless his knee proves healthy. CENTERS: Durability is an underlying issue, but the Mavs were thrilled to bring TYSON CHANDLER back into the fold. He'll be much happier in Carlisle's defensive system than he was in Mike Woodson's switch-everything approach . . . BRANDAN WRIGHT will play fewer minutes behind Chandler as an extra rim protector and rebounder. |

*Lakers-Mavericks Preview* ==========================
By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer
Los Angeles (9-19) at Dallas (20-10), 8:30 p.m. EDT
As they continue adjusting to the addition of Rajon Rondo, the Dallas Mavericks might find their way by replicating last month's performance against the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Mavericks can avoid a season-high third straight loss Friday night with a fifth consecutive victory over the Lakers, who are likely to again be without Kobe Bryant.
Dallas (20-10) has its sights set on the franchise's second title in five seasons after acquiring Rondo from Boston in a five-player trade Dec. 18. The four-time All-Star point guard is averaging an NBA-best 10.6 assists.
The Mavericks, however, haven't benefited from the move since Saturday's 99-93 home win over San Antonio in Rondo's debut. They've followed up with a 105-102 loss to Atlanta on Monday and a 124-115 defeat at Phoenix the next night.
Rondo's 10.7 points and 9.3 assists per game with Dallas aren't far off his season averages, but he's totaled 14 fouls on the defensive end. Opposing starting point guards also have scored a combined 61 points in the three contests.
Rondo had 13 points, eight assists, six rebounds and five turnovers before fouling out with 1:37 to play Tuesday.
"We're three games in (with Rondo)," coach Rick Carlisle said after his team committed a season-high 20 turnovers. "Three games in four days. We've got more work to do. When you have a couple of games like we've had the last two nights it feels like you're light years away, but we're a lot closer than it feels. We've just got to stick with it."
Carlisle's club can avoid dropping three in a row for the first time since last March by extending the franchise's longest regular-season winning streak against the Lakers. They've won the past four meetings by an average of 19.5 points.
Dirk Nowitzki, Monta Ellis and Chandler Parsons were a combined 23 of 33 from the field for 64 points and Dallas set season highs in points, shooting percentage (62.2) and assists (37) in a 140-106 home win over Los Angeles on Nov. 21.
Nowitzki has averaged 25.7 points on 70.5 percent shooting in his last three matchups with the Pacific Division-worst Lakers. He's also just five points shy of tying Elvin Hayes for eighth on the NBA career scoring list.
Ellis, though, has totaled 33 points while shooting 13 for 39 in the last two games since scoring a season-high 38 in Rondo's debut.
Los Angeles (9-20) is expected to be without Bryant for a third straight game due to soreness in his knees, Achilles tendons, feet and back. The 36-year-old, in his 19th NBA season, cited "old age" and says he needs to "reset my body."
"You've got to face reality a little bit. I'm extremely competitive and I want to be efficient," Bryant said. "I want to play at a high level and I have to work around what I can and can't do and just accept that."
After the Lakers knocked off visiting Golden State 115-105 without Bryant on Tuesday, Chicago outscored them 30-16 in the fourth quarter en route to a 113-93 victory on Christmas Day. Wesley Johnson finished with a team-high 19 points and nine rebounds despite shooting 6 for 18, while Ed Davis added 13 points and a team-best 14 boards.
Jordan Hill, who scored 16 in Chicago, has totaled 30 points and 20 rebounds in his last two games versus Dallas.
The Lakers, however, are likely to have their hands full defensively after giving up 108.0 points per game while dropping four of five. The Mavericks average an NBA-best 109.6 and have put up 120.0 per game during their run in this series.
