|
| | | ATLANTA: GUARDS: Considering he was almost gone a year ago, the Hawks are thankful JEFF TEAGUE is still in town. He may never be a great shooter, but he gets wherever he wants on the floor . . . KYLE KORVER is still the NBA's premier shooter, and he's shown no signs of relinquishing that title . . . THABO SEFOLOSHA gives the Hawks a defensive option to complement Korver. He looked worn down last season though, eventually falling out of OKC's rotation . . . KENT BAZEMORE gives Atlanta some more offensive firepower off the bench . . . DENNIS SCHRODER showed flashes of that Rajon Rondo Lite promise last year. Don't be surprised to see him paired with Teague in some lineups . . . There's no guarantee JOHN JENKINS will ever be the same after back surgery. FORWARDS: PAUL MILLSAP has developed into a capable co-alpha, along with Jeff Teague. In addition to his low-post work, he's developed a three-point shot and the ability to work off the dribble . . . DeMARRE CARROLL is trying to add a three-point shot to his repertoire. It would give him a big boost in offensive value to go along with his defense and all-around hustle . . . ADREIAN PAYNE will provide some much-needed depth at the 4 and 5 spots. He's NBA-ready, especially with his ability to pull opposing big men away from the basket with his shooting . . . MIKE MUSCALA gives them another big man who can shoot it, but he's not athletic enough to hold his own in the NBA. CENTERS: Will AL HORFORD ever stay healthy? He's an All-Star when he is. His recent injuries have been a bit fluky, but it's going to be tough to trust him . . . PERO ANTIC proved to be a capable stretch-5 last year, but the arrival of Payne will likely push him out of the rotation. | | DALLAS: GUARDS: MONTA ELLIS will be the Mavs' lead guard again, taking on even more ball-handling responsibilities with their black hole at point guard. In his first season in Dallas, he proved to be the perfect fit running pick-and-rolls in head coach Rick Carlisle's system . . . The Mavericks are in trouble if they have to rely on RAYMOND FELTON, a fringe rotation-caliber player even in his brief 'prime,' but he might end up the starter by default . . . JAMEER NELSON's poor defense makes him difficult to pair with Ellis, but offensively he's the best option . . . DEVIN HARRIS is a superior defender and a dangerous offensive player, but the questions are durability and how well he fits alongside Ellis . . . GAL MEKEL struggled offensively, but his defense is going to earn him minutes at both guard spots. He's a borderline rotation guy. FORWARDS: DIRK NOWITZKI came back on a discounted deal, but at age 36 he still has plenty left in the tank. He's a legit All-Star-caliber player . . . Dallas pried CHANDLER PARSONS from Houston, giving the team someone to run the floor with Ellis and shoot some corner threes in the half-court set. He figures to have a slightly smaller role than he did with the Rockets though . . . Last season in Utah, RICHARD JEFFERSON reestablished himself as a rotation player by adding a consistent three-point shot . . . AL-FAROUQ AMINU gives the Mavs an energy guy who can play both forward spots . . . JAE CROWDER will have to fight to keep his spot in the rotation. He has yet to put it together offensively and he needs to add a three-point shot . . . GREG SMITH won't make a significant contribution unless his knee proves healthy. CENTERS: Durability is an underlying issue, but the Mavs were thrilled to bring TYSON CHANDLER back into the fold. He'll be much happier in Carlisle's defensive system than he was in Mike Woodson's switch-everything approach . . . BRANDAN WRIGHT will play fewer minutes behind Chandler as an extra rim protector and rebounder. |

*Hawks-Mavericks Preview* =========================
By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer
Atlanta (19-7) at Dallas (20-8), 8:30 p.m. EDT
The Atlanta Hawks keep surging by playing what has been the best defense in the NBA in recent weeks.
They figure to be tested by the highest-scoring team in the league when they visit the Dallas Mavericks and their new point guard Monday night.
The Hawks (19-7) are limiting opponents to 97.0 points per game and have further elevated their defensive play during a 12-1 run, holding opponents to 89.6 points and 41.8 percent shooting.
Atlanta picked on some of the worst teams in the league in that span with wins over Boston, Charlotte, Indiana, Philadelphia and Orlando, but the last three victories have come against Chicago, Cleveland and Houston, who are more than 20 games over .500 combined.
Atlanta limited the Rockets to 39.5 percent shooting in Saturday's 104-97 road victory.
"We've had a nice start to the season, but the season's only a couple of months old," said guard Kyle Korver, who had 22 points. "We had a losing record last year. We made the playoffs last year but we won 38 games. So by no means are we like happy with ourselves. But I think we feel good about what we're building."
Korver was 4 of 8 from 3-point range and ranks second in the league with a 53.9 3-point percentage. He is among five Hawks to reach the 20-point mark at least once in the last 13 games.
Dallas (20-8) leads the league with 109.7 points per game and hopes the addition of Rajon Rondo can help put it over the top. Rondo's six points on 3-of-11 shooting were underwhelming in Saturday's 99-93 home win over San Antonio, but he added nine assists and seven rebounds.
Rondo, who averaged 10.8 assists for Boston, joins a Mavericks squad led by Monta Ellis' 4.6 assists per game. Despite its gaudy scoring average, Dallas ranks in the bottom half of the league with assists on 56.9 percent of made field goals.
"I actually think (Rondo) knows some of the plays better than our own players we had out there. That's just how smart he is," forward Dirk Nowitzki told the team's official website. "The stuff he reads out there is fantastic. Obviously, I think we've got some room to improve on both ends of the floor and get used to each other even more, but I like playing with him and so does everyone else."
Rondo had two points but recorded a season-high 19 assists and grabbed 12 rebounds in a 109-105 loss at Atlanta on Dec. 2. He has averaged 13.7 assists in his last seven meetings with the Hawks.
Ellis matched his season high with 38 points Saturday, including 11 in the final four minutes. Rondo assisted on three of his baskets.
"My teammates were doing a great job of finding me in the open spots, and I was able to knock the shots down," Ellis told the team's official website.
He has averaged 28.0 points in his last five home games.
Dallas has shot 39.5 percent from 3-point range over its last six games while Atlanta has held its past nine opponents to 28.3 percent from beyond the arc.
The Mavericks have won 12 of 15 at home in this series.
