KEY GAME INFORMATION
LA LAKERS: GUARDS: At 36 and coming off multiple injuries, it seems unlikely that vintage KOBE BRYANT will ever return. Still, he'll get to the line enough to be among the league's scoring leaders . . . JEREMY LIN will start and be useful when his streaky shot gets hot . . . NICK YOUNG demanded the Lakers re-sign him, and what Swaggy P wants, Swaggy P gets (after L.A. struck out on every free agent). He'll miss the first couple weeks of the season as he recovers from thumb surgery . . . XAVIER HENRY will try to establish himself as a deep threat off the bench . . . JORDAN CLARKSON is the kind of big guard they've paired with Bryant over the years. He could be a year or two away from contributing . . . STEVE NASH is out for the season with a back injury. He's likely played his last game as a member of the Lakers. FORWARDS: You know it's been a rough offseason when CARLOS BOOZER, who no contending team wanted, is your prize. He's still a zero at the defensive end, but Boozer can shoot from mid-range and could see more minutes in a thin L.A. frontcourt . . . WESLEY JOHNSON gives them a spot-up shooter on the wing who brings some defensive versatility . . . They'll probably pair Boozer and teenager JULIUS RANDLE together often. The rookie has drawn comparisons to Zach Randolph . . . RYAN KELLY is a serviceable stretch-4 for the second unit. CENTERS: JORDAN HILL will see time at the 4 and 5 spots. His per-minute rates are strong, but his stamina is not . . . C'mon, who doesn't like ED DAVIS? . . . The Lakers will likely use Boozer, Hill and Davis as undersized centers, because entering the year they only have lead-footed ROBERT SACRE as a true 5. He's not a candidate to play more than 20 minutes per night.
DALLAS: GUARDS: MONTA ELLIS will be the Mavs' lead guard again, taking on even more ball-handling responsibilities with their black hole at point guard. In his first season in Dallas, he proved to be the perfect fit running pick-and-rolls in head coach Rick Carlisle's system . . . The Mavericks are in trouble if they have to rely on RAYMOND FELTON, a fringe rotation-caliber player even in his brief 'prime,' but he might end up the starter by default . . . JAMEER NELSON's poor defense makes him difficult to pair with Ellis, but offensively he's the best option . . . DEVIN HARRIS is a superior defender and a dangerous offensive player, but the questions are durability and how well he fits alongside Ellis . . . GAL MEKEL struggled offensively, but his defense is going to earn him minutes at both guard spots. He's a borderline rotation guy. FORWARDS: DIRK NOWITZKI came back on a discounted deal, but at age 36 he still has plenty left in the tank. He's a legit All-Star-caliber player . . . Dallas pried CHANDLER PARSONS from Houston, giving the team someone to run the floor with Ellis and shoot some corner threes in the half-court set. He figures to have a slightly smaller role than he did with the Rockets though . . . Last season in Utah, RICHARD JEFFERSON reestablished himself as a rotation player by adding a consistent three-point shot . . . AL-FAROUQ AMINU gives the Mavs an energy guy who can play both forward spots . . . JAE CROWDER will have to fight to keep his spot in the rotation. He has yet to put it together offensively and he needs to add a three-point shot . . . GREG SMITH won't make a significant contribution unless his knee proves healthy. CENTERS: Durability is an underlying issue, but the Mavs were thrilled to bring TYSON CHANDLER back into the fold. He'll be much happier in Carlisle's defensive system than he was in Mike Woodson's switch-everything approach . . . BRANDAN WRIGHT will play fewer minutes behind Chandler as an extra rim protector and rebounder.

*Lakers-Mavericks Preview* ==========================

By JEFF BARTL STATS Senior Writer

Los Angeles (3-9) at Dallas (9-3), 8:30 p.m. EDT

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has no sympathy for the 3-9 Los Angeles Lakers, saying on a radio show recently that he hopes they "suck forever."

Kobe Bryant doesn't believe that will be the case much longer.

Los Angeles can further support its star's theory Friday night in Dallas by winning a third straight and ending the Mavericks' five-game winning streak.

The Lakers lost nine of its first 10 with Bryant shouldering much of the load offensively, but he's gotten some help over the last two. Bryant had 28 points in Tuesday's 114-109 win in Atlanta before scoring 29 the following night in a 98-92 victory at Houston.

"Look, we had a bad start," said Bryant, who leads the league with 27.5 points per game. "Are we a 3-9 team? No. We're a much better team than that. We got off to a really bad start, but we'll (get better)."

The return of Nick Young could be the spark the Lakers needed. Young, who missed the first 10 games because of thumb surgery after re-signing for four years and $21.3 million in the offseason, came off the bench to score 17 against the Hawks and 16 versus the Rockets.

"It makes it tough for a defender," Young said. "They can't just focus on Kobe all the time. That's me being Tonto right there. The Lone Ranger (Bryant) got a little help. The bigs were battling. They were doing their thing."

Jordan Hill posted his fourth consecutive double-double Wednesday and Carlos Boozer notched his second straight after having none during the 1-9 start.

Bryant still attempted 28 shots against Houston, marking the fifth time he's taken at least that many this season. LeBron James and Jeff Green have done so once apiece, the only other two in the NBA to attempt that many shots entering Thursday's action.

Young joked he has been the missing piece for the Lakers, but Bryant sure would appreciate if the turnaround continued no matter the reason.

"Listen, if that's what's rolling, that's what's rolling," Bryant said of Young's comments. "I'll take it."

Dallas has been even better lately, winning four straight by an average of 25.5 points before holding on for a 105-102 win at Washington on Wednesday. Monta Ellis scored 24 of his 34 points in the first half to get the Mavericks (9-3) going early.

Dirk Nowitzki, as he's done so many times in his career, was big down the stretch. He sprained his ankle in the fourth quarter, then returned to a hit a clutch 3-pointer with just over a minute left.

"It was a close game, so if I can walk, I want to be out there. And it actually felt OK, once it loosened up," Nowitzki said.

Nowitzki had a season-low 13 points for the second straight game and went 4 of 12 from the field, but he hit 3 of 4 from long range. He expects to play in this contest.

"I wasn't shocked when he came back," coach Rick Carlisle said. "He's a game-changer and one of the best in history. And even though he didn't have a great game shooting the ball or scoring, his ability to make timely plays and to change the dimensions of the court showed what his impact is."

The Mavericks swept last season's three-game series with the Lakers, with Nowitzki scoring 27 points in each of the last two.

Bryant missed each contest recovering from a left Achilles' tendon tear after playing only six games last season. The Lakers have won seven of the last eight meetings in which Bryant has played.
