| |  | LA CLIPPERS: GUARDS: CHRIS PAUL is back with the Clippers, and this time with his handpicked head coach. Not that Doc Rivers will make a big difference though, as he's just as uncreative an offensive tactician as Vinny Del Negro was . . . J.J. REDICK will do less ball-handling than he did in Orlando the first half of last season, but he should feast on the wide-open looks Paul creates for him . . . JAMAL CRAWFORD will once again be a Sixth Man of the Year candidate. He's a pure gunner with some creativity to his game . . . DARREN COLLISON is strictly a back-up after a dreadful one-year stint in Dallas . . . WILLIE GREEN, a starter in name-only last year, may be squeezed out of the rotation. FORWARDS: BLAKE GRIFFIN deferred more often last season, especially as he continues to see more double teams. But he did show improvement as a passer . . . JARED DUDLEY steps into Caron Butler's old role. He'll set up for a lot of wide-open corner threes. His reputation as a quality defender is downright wrong . . . MATT BARNES will often close games due to his defense, and he's coming off one of his best offensive seasons . . . Rookie REGGIE BULLOCK is the kind of spot-up shooter the Clips want to surround Paul with. If Bullock's defense matches up with his athleticism, he could break this rotation . . . It's tough to see how BYRON MULLENS fits on a team with postseason aspirations. CENTERS: Though he's the team's only real rim protector, DEANDRE JORDAN will likely be in a part-time role again. He still can't defend the pick-and-roll, and Rivers got by just fine without a shot-blocker in Boston . . . RYAN HOLLINS is little more than a big body with six fouls to give. Blake Griffin will often slide to the five on this team. | | DALLAS: GUARDS: MONTA ELLIS slides into the 2-guard spot vacated by O.J. Mayo. He should benefit from the attention Dirk Nowitzki gets and from playing alongside a pure point guard . . . JOSE CALDERON is a defensive liability, but he should have the Mavs' offense running more smoothly . . . VINCE CARTER has become one of the league's better sixth men. He'll see plenty of minutes for a team that figures to frequently play small ball . . . When healthy, DEVIN HARRIS should be the defensive side of a platoon with Calderon . . . Israeli star GAL MEKEL should be able to help at both guard spots on a part-time basis . . . WAYNE ELLINGTON has yet to prove he can do anything with second-unit minutes . . . After breaking his foot, SHANE LARKIN is looking at a redshirt year. FORWARDS: Last season was a bit of a lost season for DIRK NOWITZKI, who missed the beginning of the year after knee surgery and didn't get going until late. Health, as well as the arrival of a true point guard in Jose Calderon, should allow him to bounce back nicely . . . SHAWN MARION had a nice resurgence last season, and he should have at least one good season left as he plays for another contract . . . JAE CROWDER has a chance to establish himself as the heir apparent to Marion. He's a hustle guy right now, and whether he can be more will depend on whether he develops his jump shot . . . RICKY LEDO was a favorite NBA draft sleeper for many experts. But while the skilled wing has NBA talent, he also has a reputation for being a bad seed. Ledo is almost certainly headed to the D-League for now. CENTERS: SAMUEL DALEMBERT is a sad consolation prize in the Dwight Howard derby. He'll likely step in as a starter . . . BRANDAN WRIGHT has never been able to overcome injuries. He could end up splitting time with Dalembert . . . DEJUAN BLAIR will provide energy and offense at the four and five . . . BERNARD JAMES should continue to develop as a rim protector. |

The Dallas Mavericks are on a roll even though Dirk Nowitzki isn't.
Blake Griffin hopes to keep his going and get the Los Angeles Clippers on one.
The star big men square off for the first time this season as Dallas tries to keep up its impressive play Friday night when it hosts the Clippers.
The Mavericks (19-13) are coming off a perfect road trip, winning in Chicago, Minnesota and Washington even as Nowitzki was held below 20 points in each game and shot a combined 34.8 percent. The 11-time All-Star, averaging a team-leading 20.9 points, failed to reach double figures for the first time in 35 games Wednesday, but Dallas beat the Wizards 87-78.
Part of the reason Nowitzki struggled, shooting 3 of 14 from the field for nine points, was that he rolled his ankle early in the contest. However, he remained in the game and will be good to go against the Clippers.
"Well, it was obvious that I wasn't moving well," said Nowitzki, who has missed his last eight 3-point attempts. "I didn't get any elevation on my jumper, but I was an expensive decoy (Wednesday) and I was trying to just spread the floor for the guys."
Griffin has been anything but a decoy lately. He didn't score more than 30 points in a game this season until doing so four times in the last six, including three of the past four as he's averaged 30.3 points.
As good as Griffin has been offensively, the Clippers (22-12) hadn't been doing so well. They lost three of four to close December before opening the New Year with a 112-85 victory over Charlotte on Wednesday, with Griffin scoring 31 on 14-of-20 shooting and grabbing 12 rebounds.
"We also have the utmost confidence in Blake," said Chris Paul, who had 17 points and 14 assists. "He works so hard, and it was great to see it all come together for him (against the Bobcats). That was unreal. They didn't know what to do."
Paul helped the Clippers total a season-high 36 assists on 47 made field goals. Starter Jared Dudley had 20 points with six 3-pointers after a four-game stretch in which he totaled 17 points and was 0 for 5 from beyond the arc.
"You could see what we worked on... at practice with ball movement," coach Doc Rivers said. "It was quick. The ball was flying around the floor, and that makes us really good. It makes it harder to guard Chris and Blake because you can't key on those guys. I think we got away from that a little bit, so it's good that that came back."
The trip to Dallas is the first of games on back-to-back nights for Los Angeles, which plays at San Antonio on Saturday. The Clippers have lost their last two on the road - to Golden State and Portland - by a combined six points.
They've lost 11 of 12 in Dallas, including a 109-102 overtime defeat March 26 in the teams' last meeting. Nowitzki and Paul each scored 33 points, but Griffin was held to 14 as Los Angeles had its three-game win streak over Dallas snapped.
The Mavs have lost their last two home games despite Monta Ellis totaling 44 points. He scored 23 on Wednesday at Washington in what coach Rick Carlisle called the best game Ellis has played with Dallas since signing in the offseason.
Ellis was 9 of 10 at the foul line, and the Mavericks are making 89.6 percent of their free throws during the three-game win streak.
