|
| | | MEMPHIS: GUARDS: MIKE CONLEY has steadily improved every season. He's now a borderline All-Star point guard . . . TONY ALLEN is back as the defensive half of Memphis' SG platoon. He's a favorite of new head coach David Joerger, the mastermind of the Grizzlies' suffocating defense as an assistant . . . JERRYD BAYLESS is on the cusp of being one of the NBA's top sixth men. He's the only pure scorer they have on the perimeter . . . MIKE MILLER's minutes will be limited in the regular season, but he's still an effective bench option with his long-range shooting . . . Ultra-athletic rookie JAMAAL FRANKLIN seems like a future rotation guy if/when he grasps Joerger's defensive schemes. FORWARDS: ZACH RANDOLPH has taken a back seat to Marc Gasol, but Z-Bo is still a dangerous low-post scorer. He might give way to Ed Davis a little more often when Memphis needs defense . . . TAYSHAUN PRINCE brought another quality defender to Memphis at last season's trade deadline. He's no better than a fifth option on offense, though . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER is one of the only shooters Memphis has, and he seems ready for a bigger role after a strong postseason performance. If nothing else, he's the heir apparent to Prince . . . ED DAVIS seems ready for a bigger role, but it's not coming behind Randolph and Gasol. He's a back-up for at least one more season . . . JON LEUER gives the Grizzlies another savvy reserve big. CENTERS: He's a bit overrated defensively (good, but not Defensive Player of the Year good), but MARC GASOL has emerged as the centerpiece of the Memphis offense. He's one of the league's best passing big men, to go along with some skill in the post . . . KOSTA KOUFOS gives them another 7-footer who can move the ball, though his role will be much smaller than it was in Denver. | | DALLAS: GUARDS: MONTA ELLIS slides into the 2-guard spot vacated by O.J. Mayo. He should benefit from the attention Dirk Nowitzki gets and from playing alongside a pure point guard . . . JOSE CALDERON is a defensive liability, but he should have the Mavs' offense running more smoothly . . . VINCE CARTER has become one of the league's better sixth men. He'll see plenty of minutes for a team that figures to frequently play small ball . . . When healthy, DEVIN HARRIS should be the defensive side of a platoon with Calderon . . . Israeli star GAL MEKEL should be able to help at both guard spots on a part-time basis . . . WAYNE ELLINGTON has yet to prove he can do anything with second-unit minutes . . . After breaking his foot, SHANE LARKIN is looking at a redshirt year. FORWARDS: Last season was a bit of a lost season for DIRK NOWITZKI, who missed the beginning of the year after knee surgery and didn't get going until late. Health, as well as the arrival of a true point guard in Jose Calderon, should allow him to bounce back nicely . . . SHAWN MARION had a nice resurgence last season, and he should have at least one good season left as he plays for another contract . . . JAE CROWDER has a chance to establish himself as the heir apparent to Marion. He's a hustle guy right now, and whether he can be more will depend on whether he develops his jump shot . . . RICKY LEDO was a favorite NBA draft sleeper for many experts. But while the skilled wing has NBA talent, he also has a reputation for being a bad seed. Ledo is almost certainly headed to the D-League for now. CENTERS: SAMUEL DALEMBERT is a sad consolation prize in the Dwight Howard derby. He'll likely step in as a starter . . . BRANDAN WRIGHT has never been able to overcome injuries. He could end up splitting time with Dalembert . . . DEJUAN BLAIR will provide energy and offense at the four and five . . . BERNARD JAMES should continue to develop as a rim protector. |

*Grizzlies-Mavericks Preview* =============================
Memphis (10-13) at Dallas (14-10), 8:30 p.m. EDT
Dirk Nowitzki and coach Rick Carlisle have returned to practice since missing the Dallas Mavericks' last game due to illnesses.
They were in good spirits and cracking jokes upon coming back, perhaps because Dallas now has Brandan Wright available again.
Wright provided a boost his last time out in his season debut and should help the Mavericks on the boards Wednesday night at home as they try to hand the short-handed Memphis Grizzlies a fifth straight loss.
Dallas (14-10) won 106-93 over lowly Milwaukee at home Saturday without Nowitzki, who was sick. Nowitzki came back to practice Monday.
"I felt a lot better during the day Saturday, but it really hit me Friday night," Nowitzki said. "Friday, I was struggling to keep fluids in, so Saturday I didn't feel that hot. But I'm glad the boys pulled it out."
Nowitzki then went on with a joke at the expense of the Dallas Cowboys, who blew a 23-point halftime lead in Sunday's 37-36 loss to Green Bay.
"I felt a lot better already come Sunday, until I watched the Cowboys game," he said. "Then I got sick again."
Carlisle was absent since he has been fighting an upper respiratory problem. He was also back at practice, where he said he was over the illness but joked about it by referencing the popular television show "Homeland."
"When you get it, you feel like Brody in Caracas without the heroin probably," Carlisle said.
Perhaps the Mavericks were in a light-hearted mood because of how Wright came in and scored 19 points on 9-of-10 shooting off the bench in his first action after missing the first 23 games with a shoulder injury.
Wright's presence has given Dallas another big man in its rotation with DeJuan Blair and Samuel Dalembert, who did not see action for the first time Saturday. Nowitzki is excited to get onto the court with Wright.
"He's good at the stuff that I stink at," Nowitzki said. "He plays above the rim."
Wright should help against Memphis (10-14), which has outrebounded Dallas by an average of 10.3 in the last three meetings. The Mavs beat the Grizzlies 111-99 on Nov. 2 behind Nowitzki's 24 points.
"(We'll) be sharp hopefully on Wednesday against a physical team that always gives us trouble on the boards so we gotta be ready," Nowitzki said.
The Grizzlies had a healthy Marc Gasol then and are now 3-8 without the injured big man following Tuesday's 96-92 home loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Gasol and Mike Conley combined for 47 points the last time these teams met, but both could be out Wednesday. That's because Conley missed his first game Tuesday after bruising his left thigh in Sunday's 101-93 loss to Minnesota.
The last two defeats have followed a familiar pattern. The Grizzlies fell behind by 11 points after one period against the Timberwolves and were down by 10 after 12 minutes versus the Lakers.
"We are letting teams get up by shooting the basketball and getting loose balls," coach Dave Joerger said. "They are getting after us instead of us getting after them."
Zach Randolph had 18 points and a season-high 16 rebounds Tuesday for his third straight double-double.
