| |  | CHICAGO: GUARDS: The best guess on DERRICK ROSE is a February return. But an ACL injury usually isn't 100 percent until the second full year back . . . With Rose out, KIRK HINRICH figures to play heavy minutes early. He's a defensive specialist who will pass and watch on offense . . . NATE ROBINSON could push Hinrich for minutes. He's the offensive half of that platoon, but Thibodeau almost always leans defense . . . RICHARD HAMILTON will carry a bigger offensive load while Rose is recovering. He's a shadow of his former self . . . MARCO BELINELLI is a nice addition. He's solid defensively, and he brings the long-range shooting Chicago lacks. Don't be surprised if he pushes Hamilton . . . Rookie MARQUIS TEAGUE will mostly sit and watch this year. FORWARDS: After avoiding wrist surgery, LUOL DENG should be Chicago's top scorer while Rose is out. He's the only one on this team who even has a chance to generate his own offense . . . CARLOS BOOZER continues to be a major disappointment. In the past it's been his atrocious defense, but now he's taken a step back offensively as well. He may score more with Rose out, but he'll continue to sit late in close games . . . TAJ GIBSON should be in for a bigger role. With Omer Asik gone, he's one of only two defensively capable bigs on this roster . . . VLADIMIR RADMANOVIC will try to replace some of the three-point shooting they lost when Kyle Korver left . . . JIMMY BUTLER has a puncher's chance at a rotation spot after a good summer. CENTERS: JOAKIM NOAH was still working his way back from that badly sprained ankle this summer. His durability is questionable, but the Bulls will have to lean on Noah for more minutes now that Omer Asik is gone . . . NAZR MOHAMMED steps into Asik's role as Noah's backup. But while Asik was an active defender, Mohammed is more of just a big body with six fouls to give. | | DALLAS: GUARDS: DARREN COLLISON's jump shot might be shaky, but he can get into the lane at will. He'll be a much different look than Jason Kidd had been in Big D . . . O.J. MAYO becomes the second option in this offense. He'll have the ball in his hands a lot . . . VINCE CARTER will come off the bench. At this point, he's a three-point specialist, and not a very good one . . . DELONTE WEST will back up both guard spots. Don't be surprised if he overtakes Collison at some point . . . RODDY BEAUBOIS can heat up in an instant, but he has work to do to make this rotation . . . DAHNTAY JONES is roster filler . . . DOMINIQUE JONES enters the year on the roster bubble . . . JARED CUNNINGHAM will learn the point guard position watching from the bench as a rookie. FORWARDS: After a slow start last season, DIRK NOWITZKI looked like the Dirk of old in the second half of the year. He's still got something left in the tank, but it's still unclear if the swelling in his knee will require surgery, something that would shelve him for more than a month . . . SHAWN MARION is still an important cog in Carlisle's creative defensive gameplans, so he'll keep playing big minutes despite his dwindling offensive skills . . . ELTON BRAND is still relevant, even behind Nowitzki, because of his ability to play some center . . . BRANDAN WRIGHT will be in and out of the rotation again, but he's now relatively healthy and showed signs of being a serviceable rotation player a year ago . . . Rookie Jae CROWDER profiles as a potentially solid second-unit player, but he'll be buried on this depth chart. CENTERS: CHRIS KAMAN gives Dallas some offensive skill at center, but he's not exactly the defensive presence they've needed. He'll log the bulk of the minutes here, but there are going to be a handful of games where the Mavs have to sit him and go small for defensive purposes . . . 27-year-old rookie BERNARD JAMES could fill Ian Mahinmi's old role of a shot-blocker/fouler off the bench.

With their victory that ended the second-longest winning streak in NBA history, the short-handed Chicago Bulls proved they still have enough to play with any team in the league.
Now they're hoping to carry over that momentum and win a season-high fourth straight Saturday when they visit the Dallas Mavericks.
Chicago (39-31) stopped Miami's 27-game winning streak with a 101-97 home victory Wednesday as Luol Deng led the way with 28 points and Carlos Boozer added 21 and 17 rebounds.
While the Bulls clinched a playoff berth by beating the league's top team, the Heat ended up six wins shy of the 33-game record streak held by the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers.
What made the victory more astonishing is that the Bulls were not only missing Derrick Rose (knee) despite rumors he might play, but they also were without Joakim Noah (right foot), Marco Belinelli (abdominal strain) and Richard Hamilton (lower back).
"It's all about what we think in the locker room," forward Taj Gibson said. "A lot of people kind of write us off every other day, but we just stick to our principles and do what we have to do."
Chicago has gotten used to being short-handed and that's likely to be the case again Saturday, though Noah and Belinelli are expected to be game-time decisions. Jimmy Butler has stepped up to average 18.5 points starting the last two games for Belinelli. To help make up for the absence of Noah, who has missed the past three games, Boozer has posted four straight double-doubles.
Without Rose all season, the Bulls have yet to win more than three consecutive games, though they can change that Saturday if they beat Dallas for a fifth straight time.
While Chicago tries to catch Brooklyn for the Eastern Conference's No. 4 seed and home-court advantage in the first round, Dallas (35-37) would just be happy to make the postseason. The Mavericks are 10th in the West, 1 1/2 games out of the last playoff spot.
They lost 101-78 at Chicago on Nov. 28 as Deng scored a team-high 22, though he's averaged 9.3 points on 29.4 percent shooting in his last three games in Dallas.
Chicago held a 44-30 advantage on the boards in the first meeting and ranks near the top of the NBA with a plus-2.4 rebounding differential.
That's likely to be an area of concern for the Mavericks since they're near the bottom of the league at minus-3.4 after getting outrebounded by 21 in a 103-78 home loss to Indiana on Thursday.
"It was a wipeout for us as far as the rebounding," coach Rick Carlisle said. "That's been a challenge for us."
Dirk Nowitzki will try to help the Mavericks bounce back after finishing with a team-high 21 points Thursday, two nights after scoring a season-best 33 in a win over the Clippers. He missed the first matchup with Chicago following preseason knee surgery, but he's averaged 35.3 points in the Bulls' last three visits to Dallas.
Chicago hasn't played there since Nov. 19, 2010, when the Mavs lost 88-83. Dallas had won 12 of 13 at home in the series.
The Bulls, allowing 92.4 points per game to rank third in the league, are one of only three teams to hold the Mavs under 80 points this season. Dallas, 0-15 this season when failing to score 92, has been held below 85 points in every matchup during its four-game losing streak in this series.
