KEY GAME INFORMATION
NEW YORK: GUARDS: RAYMOND FELTON will start at the point, which seems like a colossal mistake. He had his career year in New York under Mike D'Antoni, but the Knicks have gone away from the pick-and-roll system he thrived in . . . Don't be surprised if JASON KIDD is overtaking Felton in minutes played by midseason. He's limited athletically but still a heady passer . . . Resident chucker J.R. SMITH should see big minutes early before IMAN SHUMPERT steps in as the defense half of their shooting guard platoon as soon as his knee is recovered mid-season . . . RONNIE BREWER will be Smith's defensive complement while Shumpert is out . . . PABLO PRIGIONI is a game manager who provides insurance at the point. FORWARDS: This is once again CARMELO ANTHONY's team, as the Knicks will run their offense through him. It's going to be a lot of iso, and a lot of scoring opportunities for Melo . . . AMAR'E STOUDEMIRE doesn't fit nearly as well in this system as he did in former coach Mike D'Antoni's. He ended up forcing a lot of shots a year ago, and his durability is a major question mark . . . STEVE NOVAK will continue to come off the bench strictly as a three-point shooter. He's one of the best long-range bombers in the NBA, but he's too much of a defensive liability to play more than 20 minutes per night . . . Swingman JAMES WHITE will also get some minutes at the two or three spots with his 6-foot-7 frame. . . CHRIS COPELAND had some solid years overseas, but will be lucky to break into this rotation . . . KURT THOMAS is in player/coach mode. CENTERS: TYSON CHANDLER is indispensible on the defensive end as long as sieves Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire are also in the frontcourt . . . MARCUS CAMBY can't defendin space like Chandler can, but his ability to rebound and protect the rim will come in handy as the second unit is no better defensively than the starters . . . RASHEED WALLACE came out of retirement, but has a long way to go, especially with his lack of conditioning, before he contributes much at age 38.
DALLAS: GUARDS: DARREN COLLISON's jump shot might be shaky, but he can get into the lane at will. He'll be a much different look than Jason Kidd had been in Big D . . . O.J. MAYO becomes the second option in this offense. He'll have the ball in his hands a lot . . . VINCE CARTER will come off the bench. At this point, he's a three-point specialist, and not a very good one . . . DELONTE WEST will back up both guard spots. Don't be surprised if he overtakes Collison at some point . . . RODDY BEAUBOIS can heat up in an instant, but he has work to do to make this rotation . . . DAHNTAY JONES is roster filler . . . DOMINIQUE JONES enters the year on the roster bubble . . . JARED CUNNINGHAM will learn the point guard position watching from the bench as a rookie. FORWARDS: After a slow start last season, DIRK NOWITZKI looked like the Dirk of old in the second half of the year. He's still got something left in the tank, but it's still unclear if the swelling in his knee will require surgery, something that would shelve him for more than a month . . . SHAWN MARION is still an important cog in Carlisle's creative defensive gameplans, so he'll keep playing big minutes despite his dwindling offensive skills . . . ELTON BRAND is still relevant, even behind Nowitzki, because of his ability to play some center . . . BRANDAN WRIGHT will be in and out of the rotation again, but he's now relatively healthy and showed signs of being a serviceable rotation player a year ago . . . Rookie Jae CROWDER profiles as a potentially solid second-unit player, but he'll be buried on this depth chart. CENTERS: CHRIS KAMAN gives Dallas some offensive skill at center, but he's not exactly the defensive presence they've needed. He'll log the bulk of the minutes here, but there are going to be a handful of games where the Mavs have to sit him and go small for defensive purposes . . . 27-year-old rookie BERNARD JAMES could fill Ian Mahinmi's old role of a shot-blocker/fouler off the bench.

*Knicks-Mavericks Preview* ==========================

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer

New York (7-1) at Dallas (6-6), 8:30 p.m. EDT

Jason Kidd played a key role in the Mavericks winning the franchise's only NBA title two seasons ago, but he's not likely to get a warm reception upon his return to Dallas - particularly from owner Mark Cuban.

Kidd will try to help the New York Knicks continue their best start in 40 years Wednesday night when he visits his former team for the first time since leaving via free agency.

Kidd spent the last four-plus seasons running the point for Dallas (6-6), helping the Mavericks to the 2011 NBA championship along with current teammate Tyson Chandler.

His time in Dallas came to an end when he signed a three-year, $9 million contract with the Knicks (8-1) this summer.

Cuban derided the move, questioning Kidd's loyalty and claiming his jersey won't be retired by the Mavs, despite his contributions on the court.

While Cuban has claimed he's planning to boo Kidd, the 39-year-old guard has been a key figure in a fast start by the Knicks, winners of eight of their first nine games for just the third time in team history.

The previous two times - the 1969-70 and 1972-73 seasons - New York went on to win its only championships.

The Knicks already own one win over the Mavericks this month, 104-94 at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 9. Kidd had six points, three assists and three steals in that game.

"I think we believe in one another. I don't want to say it's a surprise," said Kidd, averaging 7.3 points while hitting half of his 28 3-point shots. "I think with the knowledge and the understanding of the game and the principles that (coach Mike Woodson) has put out for us, I think guys have picked it up quickly and it's kind of fun."

The Knicks certainly looked like they were having fun Tuesday, cruising to a 102-80 victory over New Orleans to open this three-game road trip, which ends Friday at Houston.

First, they'll try to win at Dallas for just the second time in 13 visits.

Carmelo Anthony's season-high 31 points, seven rebounds and two blocks were instrumental in New York's win against the Mavs earlier this month.

The superstar forward had 29 points on 12 of 22 from the floor Tuesday. Besides a team-leading 24.2 points per game, Anthony is also being lauded for his defensive play and hustle.

The Knicks are allowing a league-low 88.9 points per game.

"We are playing the best basketball (in the league), and it's because of him," Chandler said. "He is playing all over the floor on both ends. He should be at the top of the race as far as MVP goes right now."

The Mavericks haven't had the services of their superstar all season, with Dirk Nowitzki still sidelined following right knee surgery.

Dallas has lost five of seven - a stretch that started at New York - and is coming off Monday's 105-101 overtime defeat to visiting Golden State.

"It's very disappointing," guard O.J. Mayo said. "It's a game we should have had."

Mayo, the team leader with 21.8 points per game, accounted for all 11 of the Mavericks' points in overtime and finished with 27.

Chris Kaman is looking to build on one of his best performances of the season after tallying 18 points and 17 rebounds Monday. He had 18 total boards over the two previous games, and mustered only seven with 14 points at New York.
