KEY GAME INFORMATION
NEW YORK: GUARDS: RAYMOND FELTON will start at the point, which seems like a colossal mistake. He had his career year in New York under Mike D'Antoni, but the Knicks have gone away from the pick-and-roll system he thrived in . . . Don't be surprised if JASON KIDD is overtaking Felton in minutes played by midseason. He's limited athletically but still a heady passer . . . Resident chucker J.R. SMITH should see big minutes early before IMAN SHUMPERT steps in as the defense half of their shooting guard platoon as soon as his knee is recovered mid-season . . . RONNIE BREWER will be Smith's defensive complement while Shumpert is out . . . PABLO PRIGIONI is a game manager who provides insurance at the point. FORWARDS: This is once again CARMELO ANTHONY's team, as the Knicks will run their offense through him. It's going to be a lot of iso, and a lot of scoring opportunities for Melo . . . AMAR'E STOUDEMIRE doesn't fit nearly as well in this system as he did in former coach Mike D'Antoni's. He ended up forcing a lot of shots a year ago, and his durability is a major question mark . . . STEVE NOVAK will continue to come off the bench strictly as a three-point shooter. He's one of the best long-range bombers in the NBA, but he's too much of a defensive liability to play more than 20 minutes per night . . . Swingman JAMES WHITE will also get some minutes at the two or three spots with his 6-foot-7 frame. . . CHRIS COPELAND had some solid years overseas, but will be lucky to break into this rotation . . . KURT THOMAS is in player/coach mode. CENTERS: TYSON CHANDLER is indispensible on the defensive end as long as sieves Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire are also in the frontcourt . . . MARCUS CAMBY can't defendin space like Chandler can, but his ability to rebound and protect the rim will come in handy as the second unit is no better defensively than the starters . . . RASHEED WALLACE came out of retirement, but has a long way to go, especially with his lack of conditioning, before he contributes much at age 38.
CLEVELAND: GUARDS: KYRIE IRVING is the real deal, a heady playmaker and near-elite shooter. He should emerge as the NBA's next great point guard this season . . . Rookie DION WAITERS has a chance to step right into the starting lineup. He can get to the rim and generally makes good choices withthe ball. The only thing holding him back is defense after playing college ball in Syracuse's lazy zone . . . C.J. MILES will reportedly start at either the two or three spot, but he really needs to find the range on his shot again for him to stick in the starting lineup . . . Gunning combo guard DANIEL GIBSON is looking like he'll be their sixth man . . . The Cavs are still trying to figure out their second unit. JEREMY PARGO figures to be Irving's backup, but DONALD SLOAN is a better defender and could eventually pass him for this role, which doesn't mean many minutes unless Irving gets injured again. FORWARDS: TRISTAN THOMPSON is trying to add a perimeter shot to his repertoire. Don't count on him becoming David West, but he should improve offensively to go along with his rebounding and shot-blocking . . . ALONZO GEE returns as the starting small forward, excelling on the defensive end, but without a polished enough offensive game to earn 35 minutes per night . . . OMRI CASSPI was in and out of the rotation late in the year as he battled knee issues. It's getting close to make-or-break time for him . . . JON LEUER is a solid stretch four who has a real chance at a rotation spot . . . SAMARDO SAMUELS reportedly dropped some weight in his effort to find some minutes . . . LUKE WALTON is an unofficial member of the coaching staff . . . Undrafted rookie KEVIN JONES could make some noise with his work on the offensive boards . . . LUKE HARANGODY is more of a D-League talent. CENTERS: ANDERSON VAREJAO's wrist should be 100 percent, and Sideshow Anderson should be the same relentless, double-double threat he's always been . . . Rookie TYLER ZELLER is a 7-footer with some nice offensive skills -- he can knock down a jump shot in the half court, and run the floor. He'll struggle to defend in space, but made a living drawing charges at UNC, and should be able to play 20+ minutes as a rookie.

*Knicks-Cavaliers Preview* ==========================

New York (51-26) at Cleveland (24-54), 7:30 p.m. EDT

Another dangerous guard is up next for the New York Knicks after the Atlantic Division champions allowed one to get hot and help end their 13-game win streak.

The Knicks look to regroup and could have their hands full with Kyrie Irving in Friday night's visit to face the Cleveland Cavaliers.

New York (51-27) fell 118-111 in overtime at Chicago on Thursday. That ended the Knicks' longest win streak since they took 15 straight from March 1-April 2, 1994.

"It's over with," coach Mike Woodson said. "You can't win them all."

Carmelo Anthony scored exactly 36 for the third straight game for New York, which leads Central Division champion Indiana by two games with four left in the race for the Eastern Conference's No. 2 seed.

The Knicks have allowed some explosive performances by smaller perimeter players this season, most notably Golden State guard Stephen Curry's NBA season-high 54 points Feb. 27.

Former New York guard Nate Robinson scored a season-high 35 for the Bulls on Thursday, matching Toronto guard Alan Anderson's output March 22 as the most points scored by a reserve against the Knicks this season.

New York owns two close victories over Cleveland (24-54), with Anthony missing one contest with a sprained right ankle and only logging 14 minutes in the other as he left with a knee injury.

Irving scored a career-high 41 points in a 103-102 loss at New York on Dec. 15 that had Knicks point guard Raymond Felton marveling at the reigning Rookie of the Year's scoring prowess.

"When a guy gets that hot, there's nothing you can really do, other than just stay in front of him and make him take tough shots, which he did," Felton said after that win.

The Knicks limited Irving to 22 in a 102-97 road win March 4, ending their 10-game slide at Quicken Loans Arena. New York, however, was led in that contest by Amare Stoudemire's 22 points, and the forward is out for the remainder of the regular season.

Irving returned in that contest after missing three games with a hyperextended right knee. He also missed nine of 10 games between March 12-April 1, and is averaging 18.7 points but shooting only 33.7 percent in five since returning.

Irving scored 21 of his 27 points in the second half of Wednesday's 111-104 home loss to Detroit, and embattled coach Byron Scott has admitted that his star guard does not look the same.

"I don't think he's attacking as he normally does," Scott said. "You gotta ask him but I thought tonight he looked more tired in the first half that he did lately but in the second half, he picked it up."

Cleveland got good news Wednesday with the return of rookie Dion Waiters, who had 11 points in 15 minutes after missing 10 games with a knee injury. Scott said he plans on giving Waiters more minutes Friday.

The Knicks have a thin frontcourt with big men Tyson Chandler and Kenyon Martin sitting out Thursday. Chandler has a bulging disk and Martin a sprained left ankle.

Anthony picked up the slack on the glass with a season-high 19 rebounds against the Bulls. He's averaging 39.8 points in his last six games while J.R. Smith is scoring 24.9 over his last 11.

The Knicks haven't swept the Cavs since going 4-0 in 1993-94.
