KEY GAME INFORMATION
BROOKLYN: GUARDS: DERON WILLIAMS is healthy and got a much-improved supporting cast to work with. He could re-enter the NBA's best point guard discussion . . . JOE JOHNSON won't have the ballin his hands as much as he used to in Atlanta. It might give him a chance to concentrate on regaining his stroke as one of the NBA's best shooters . . . MARSHON BROOKS will look to settle in as a high-scoring sixth man. He'll be trade bait for most of the season . . . After a disastrous year in Chicago, C.J. WATSON will be asked to spell Williams for a few minutes a night . . . KEITH BOGANS is still kicking around as a second unit glue guy . . . TYSHAWN TAYLOR is an at-times out-of-control combo guard, but the rookie could threaten Watson's role at some point. FORWARDS: KRIS HUMPHRIES' contract was structured to make him easier to trade. He'll rebound and get his put-backs, and the Nets will likely showcase him a bit . . . GERALD WALLACE is slowing down, and now that he's signed his last big NBA contract he might not have much incentive to live up to his 'Crash' nickname. Brooklyn has no choice but to give him heavy minutes considering their investment . . . MIRZA TELETOVIC is a veteran stretch four. Consider him a penniless man's Channing Frye . . . TORNIKE SHENGELIA played himself into a roster spot this summer. He's a mediocre athlete, but a cagey scorer with a high basketball IQ . . . JOSH CHILDRESS and JERRY STACKHOUSE were added in September for depth . . . REGGIE EVANS will flop unconvincingly, punch opponents in the jewels and bring other 'tough guy' intangibles. CENTERS: BROOK LOPEZ had been remarkably durable before last year's foot injury, and he should be fully healed by the start of training camp. He's gifted offensively, but will continue to grab relatively few rebounds and generally get fried defensively. He's also a candidate to be traded midseason if another franchise can stomach his max contract . . . As insurance, former Wizards big man ANDRAY BLATCHE was brought in. He could be the team's best interior defender, able to play either the four or five spot.
CLEVELAND: GUARDS: KYRIE IRVING is the real deal, a heady playmaker and near-elite shooter. He should emerge as the NBA's next great point guard this season . . . Rookie DION WAITERS has a chance to step right into the starting lineup. He can get to the rim and generally makes good choices withthe ball. The only thing holding him back is defense after playing college ball in Syracuse's lazy zone . . . C.J. MILES will reportedly start at either the two or three spot, but he really needs to find the range on his shot again for him to stick in the starting lineup . . . Gunning combo guard DANIEL GIBSON is looking like he'll be their sixth man . . . The Cavs are still trying to figure out their second unit. JEREMY PARGO figures to be Irving's backup, but DONALD SLOAN is a better defender and could eventually pass him for this role, which doesn't mean many minutes unless Irving gets injured again. FORWARDS: TRISTAN THOMPSON is trying to add a perimeter shot to his repertoire. Don't count on him becoming David West, but he should improve offensively to go along with his rebounding and shot-blocking . . . ALONZO GEE returns as the starting small forward, excelling on the defensive end, but without a polished enough offensive game to earn 35 minutes per night . . . OMRI CASSPI was in and out of the rotation late in the year as he battled knee issues. It's getting close to make-or-break time for him . . . JON LEUER is a solid stretch four who has a real chance at a rotation spot . . . SAMARDO SAMUELS reportedly dropped some weight in his effort to find some minutes . . . LUKE WALTON is an unofficial member of the coaching staff . . . Undrafted rookie KEVIN JONES could make some noise with his work on the offensive boards . . . LUKE HARANGODY is more of a D-League talent. CENTERS: ANDERSON VAREJAO's wrist should be 100 percent, and Sideshow Anderson should be the same relentless, double-double threat he's always been . . . Rookie TYLER ZELLER is a 7-footer with some nice offensive skills -- he can knock down a jump shot in the half court, and run the floor. He'll struggle to defend in space, but made a living drawing charges at UNC, and should be able to play 20+ minutes as a rookie.

*Nets-Cavaliers Preview* ========================

Brooklyn (42-31) at Cleveland (22-51), 7:00 p.m. EDT

The Brooklyn Nets are looking at their next contest as an opportunity to finish an eight-game road stretch in strong fashion.

The Nets are unsure of the statuses of Joe Johnson and Gerald Wallace heading into Wednesday night's matchup with a Cleveland Cavaliers team that has lost nine straight but should have Kyrie Irving back in the lineup.

Brooklyn (42-31) returned home after a 4-3 trip ended with losses to Denver and Utah. The Nets feel that the three days back following Saturday's 116-107 defeat to the Jazz have been beneficial.

"I guess it's a little blessing in disguise that we get (a chance) to finish up the road trip on a good note," center Brook Lopez said.

Johnson has missed the last four games with a strained quadriceps but returned to practice Tuesday. It's not clear if he will play Wednesday or wait until Thursday's contest with Chicago.

The Nets lead Atlanta by one game and the Bulls by two in the race for home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, so interim coach P.J. Carlesimo may wait to use Johnson against Chicago.

Wallace sat out practice Tuesday with a sore left foot.

"You try and win but I think it's clearly not as important as the health issue, especially with Joe and Gerald right now," Carlesimo said.

The health of Irving is the primary concern for Cleveland (22-51). The Cavaliers have decided that Irving will sit out the second half of back-to-back contests to help him recover from a sprained left shoulder that kept him out for eight games March 12-29, and he missed Monday's 102-94 defeat at Atlanta.

"I think he understands we're just looking out for him," coach Byron Scott said. "That's the bottom line. We want him to finish the season on a good note, and healthy going into next season."

The Cavs haven't lost more than nine in a row since their NBA-record 26-game slide two seasons ago.

Irving would match up again with Deron Williams at point guard. The Nets have won the first two meetings this season, with Williams averaging 20.5 points and 8.5 assists and Irving averaging 23.5 and 7.5.

Lopez, averaging 23.0 points on 55.7 percent shooting over his last seven games, may be relishing this matchup. He's averaging 29.0 points on 67.6 percent shooting against Cleveland this season.

Cavs second-year forward Tristan Thompson is averaging 15.5 points and 10.0 rebounds against Brooklyn, which insists it won't be looking past the Cavs.

"This time of the season, no matter what team you're playing, they've been together for a full season, you know, and they're playing a lot better basketball," Williams said. "The teams that aren't in the playoffs, they really don't have nothing to lose so they go out there and play loose and free so we've just got to be focused on coming out and being ready to play every night and not overlooking anybody."
