| |  | MEMPHIS: GUARDS: The Grizzlies will scale back MIKE CONLEY's minutes a bit. He's a quality starting point guard, but seemed to lose some pep as last season wore on . . . TONY ALLEN figures to see more playing time now that O.J. Mayo is gone. He's an outstanding defender who will be the fifth option on offense . . . JERRYD BAYLESS figures to become the new sixth man and Allen platoon partner. He'll also spell Conley at the point, leading to solid minutes for the combo guard . . . Second-year man JOSH SELBY has a chance for a rotation spot after starring in the Summer League. He has big offensive upside . . . WAYNE ELLINGTON seems like an emergency plan for the second unit . . . This is likely a redshirt year for talented, but erratic, rookie TONY WROTEN. FORWARDS: RUDY GAY is going to lead the Grizzlies in touches and shots. He's not shy about looking for iso situations . . . ZACH RANDOLPH had trouble getting back into the flow after his knee injury. It's always been a fragile balance with Z-Bo, and he could be an odd man out going forward . . . MARREESE SPEIGHTS should be the offensive focal point of the bench unit as their sixth man . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER is a versatile defensive piece who will see solid minutes off the bench. He's a non-factor offensively, though . . . DARRELL ARTHUR suffered a non-displaced fractured in his leg in late September, and will not likely be ready when the season begins. A rising young big, his role will depend on when his athleticism comes back. CENTERS: The Grizzlies are at their best when MARC GASOL is getting touches and shots on the offensive end. Whether or not Gay and Randolph are willing to share is a concern, but Gasol has to be aggressive when the ball is in his hands . . . HAMED HADDADI will continue to play limited minutes off the bench. | | CLEVELAND: GUARDS: KYRIE IRVING is the real deal, a heady playmaker and near-elite shooter. He should emerge as the NBA's next great point guard this season . . . Rookie DION WAITERS has a chance to step right into the starting lineup. He can get to the rim and generally makes good choices withthe ball. The only thing holding him back is defense after playing college ball in Syracuse's lazy zone . . . C.J. MILES will reportedly start at either the two or three spot, but he really needs to find the range on his shot again for him to stick in the starting lineup . . . Gunning combo guard DANIEL GIBSON is looking like he'll be their sixth man . . . The Cavs are still trying to figure out their second unit. JEREMY PARGO figures to be Irving's backup, but DONALD SLOAN is a better defender and could eventually pass him for this role, which doesn't mean many minutes unless Irving gets injured again. FORWARDS: TRISTAN THOMPSON is trying to add a perimeter shot to his repertoire. Don't count on him becoming David West, but he should improve offensively to go along with his rebounding and shot-blocking . . . ALONZO GEE returns as the starting small forward, excelling on the defensive end, but without a polished enough offensive game to earn 35 minutes per night . . . OMRI CASSPI was in and out of the rotation late in the year as he battled knee issues. It's getting close to make-or-break time for him . . . JON LEUER is a solid stretch four who has a real chance at a rotation spot . . . SAMARDO SAMUELS reportedly dropped some weight in his effort to find some minutes . . . LUKE WALTON is an unofficial member of the coaching staff . . . Undrafted rookie KEVIN JONES could make some noise with his work on the offensive boards . . . LUKE HARANGODY is more of a D-League talent. CENTERS: ANDERSON VAREJAO's wrist should be 100 percent, and Sideshow Anderson should be the same relentless, double-double threat he's always been . . . Rookie TYLER ZELLER is a 7-footer with some nice offensive skills -- he can knock down a jump shot in the half court, and run the floor. He'll struggle to defend in space, but made a living drawing charges at UNC, and should be able to play 20+ minutes as a rookie. |

While the Memphis Grizzlies continue to pile up wins, they had to fight their way back in their last game.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are coming off an impressive comeback of their own.
Looking for their first win in Cleveland in almost a decade, the Grizzlies try for a fourth consecutive victory over the Cavaliers on Friday night, and they likely won't have to deal with Kyrie Irving while they do it.
Memphis (40-19) has won 10 of 11, with its only loss coming 98-91 at Eastern Conference-leading Miami last Friday. The Grizzlies handily bounced back two nights later with a 108-82 victory at Orlando, then beat Portland 91-85 on Wednesday after trailing by 17 in the third quarter. This came a week after they erased a 25-point deficit in a 90-84 win over Dallas.
"I don't like being down 17 or 25, but being in those situations, we get a taste of it, and we find who we are," said Mike Conley, who scored 20 against the Trail Blazers.
"We're not always going out there blowing people out. We're winning close games. We're having to come back. Every night is a different night, and for us to win in different ways is good."
The Grizzlies have won three straight over the Cavaliers (21-40), but they've all been played in Memphis. They won 84-78 on Nov. 26, while Conley and Irving both sat out.
The Grizzlies have been outscored by an average of 11.7 points in losing seven straight in Cleveland since November 2003, though, only one of those defeats came since LeBron James left town.
Friday marks the first meeting between these teams since Memphis - in an effort to clear salary - sent Marreese Speights, Wayne Ellington, Josh Selby and a future first-round draft pick to Cleveland in exchange for Jon Leuer on Jan. 22.
Providing significant contributions since the trade, Speights and Ellington combined for 30 points and 13 rebounds Wednesday in a thrilling 104-101 win over Utah. Irving scored 11 of his 20 points over the last 4:21 and had 10 assists for Cleveland, which trailed by 12 with just over seven minutes to go.
"Merry Christmas to us. We got lucky. That was a gift, basically," coach Byron Scott said. "I told them after the game that we can't come out and play like that and expect to come back and win a basketball game."
That is especially true with Irving in street clothes.
Irving is doubtful for this game with an illness. He also continues to play through knee pain, and Scott said he would consider shutting him down if the problems persist. The Cavs are 4-10 without their All-Star point guard.
Speights is averaging 12.7 points and 6.3 boards with Cleveland after averaging 6.6 and 4.7 this season with Memphis. Ellington, who's started the last two games in place of the ill Dion Waiters, has recorded 11.1 points per contest over his last 13.
The Cavaliers have won four straight and seven of 10 when Ellington scores at least 10.
"He's solid," Scott said. "That's the thing about Wayne. I trust him when he's out there because I know he's going to do all the right things. ... He plays within himself and he competes. He's not afraid of the moment."
Waiters, averaging 19.9 points on 52.5 percent shooting over a seven-game stretch, is questionable to suit up Friday.
Zach Randolph, Memphis' leader with 15.7 points and 11.6 rebounds, seems unlikely to play after missing the last two games with an ankle injury.
Marc Gasol is averaging 20.0 points over the last four games for the Grizzlies.
