| |  | NEW ORLEANS: GUARDS: This offense will belong to ERIC GORDON. He'll get over the fact that the Hornets matched his offer from Phoenix, and as long as his surgically-repaired knee holds up, he's one of the most complete young scorers in the NBA . . . The Hornets reached for AUSTIN RIVERS with the 10th pick because Monty Williams wants to coach him and thinks he can be an NBA point guard. Rivers has the handle, but his athleticism is ordinary and, more importantly, he has never shown a PG mentality at any level . . . GREIVIS VASQUEZ is the closest thing to a true point guard on this roster. He'll see solid minutes assuming Rivers' adjustment is a tough one . . . Well-rounded ROGER MASON JR. will also provide point guard depth . . . XAVIER HENRY hasn't lived up to his reputation as a shooter, but the Hornets can be patient with him . . . Rookie BRIAN ROBERTS has had a strong enough preseason to likely earn a roster spot. FORWARDS: ANTHONY DAVIS should step right in as a starter. His offensive game is further along than he gets credit for, and on the defensive end he's an absolute force from the basket out to the perimeter . . . He'll probably miss having Dwight Howard drawing in defenses, but RYAN ANDERSON has always been a very good three-point shooter. He and Davis are unique enough talents to share the court even if they're both power forwards . . . AL-FAROUQ AMINU made some strides on the defensive end late last season, which is what will get him minutes under Williams. He's underwhelming on the offensive end . . . If HAKIM WARRICK couldn't succeed as Steve Nash's pick-and-roll partner, it seems unlikely he'll ever help in New Orleans . . . Rookie DARIUS MILLER is looking to establish some kind of role with the team . . . LANCE THOMAS is doubtful to earn a salary to pay off his jewelry debts. CENTERS: ROBIN LOPEZ has always had the ability to protect the rim and does a decent job in space. Look for him to end up grabbing the bulk of minutes in the middle . . . JASON SMITH gives the Hornets a more offensive-minded option off the bench. | | CLEVELAND: GUARDS: KYRIE IRVING is the real deal, a heady playmaker and near-elite shooter. He should emerge as the NBA's next great point guard this season . . . Rookie DION WAITERS has a chance to step right into the starting lineup. He can get to the rim and generally makes good choices withthe ball. The only thing holding him back is defense after playing college ball in Syracuse's lazy zone . . . C.J. MILES will reportedly start at either the two or three spot, but he really needs to find the range on his shot again for him to stick in the starting lineup . . . Gunning combo guard DANIEL GIBSON is looking like he'll be their sixth man . . . The Cavs are still trying to figure out their second unit. JEREMY PARGO figures to be Irving's backup, but DONALD SLOAN is a better defender and could eventually pass him for this role, which doesn't mean many minutes unless Irving gets injured again. FORWARDS: TRISTAN THOMPSON is trying to add a perimeter shot to his repertoire. Don't count on him becoming David West, but he should improve offensively to go along with his rebounding and shot-blocking . . . ALONZO GEE returns as the starting small forward, excelling on the defensive end, but without a polished enough offensive game to earn 35 minutes per night . . . OMRI CASSPI was in and out of the rotation late in the year as he battled knee issues. It's getting close to make-or-break time for him . . . JON LEUER is a solid stretch four who has a real chance at a rotation spot . . . SAMARDO SAMUELS reportedly dropped some weight in his effort to find some minutes . . . LUKE WALTON is an unofficial member of the coaching staff . . . Undrafted rookie KEVIN JONES could make some noise with his work on the offensive boards . . . LUKE HARANGODY is more of a D-League talent. CENTERS: ANDERSON VAREJAO's wrist should be 100 percent, and Sideshow Anderson should be the same relentless, double-double threat he's always been . . . Rookie TYLER ZELLER is a 7-footer with some nice offensive skills -- he can knock down a jump shot in the half court, and run the floor. He'll struggle to defend in space, but made a living drawing charges at UNC, and should be able to play 20+ minutes as a rookie. |

While Kyrie Irving has emerged as a legitimate star, Anthony Davis is still trying to find some consistency following an up-and-down first half.
The last two No. 1 picks meet for the first time on Wednesday night when Irving's Cleveland Cavaliers host Davis and the New Orleans Hornets.
After his worst performance of the season with six points on 2-of-15 shooting in a 96-95 loss to San Antonio last Wednesday, Irving headed into the All-Star weekend intent on leaving his mark.
He certainly did that in Houston, scoring 32 in the Rising Stars Challenge, winning the 3-point contest and finishing with 15 points in his first All-Star game.
Now the 2011-12 rookie of the year will try to carry that momentum into the second half.
"(The) weekend was just basically about earning everybody's respect, and getting a chance for people to see me that don't usually see me," Irving said.
Irving is sixth in the league in scoring at 23.5 points per game, and averaged 26.2 points while shooting 51.6 percent in his previous 10 games before his clunker against the Spurs. However, he had a similar performance with six points on 2-of-13 shooting in an 89-84 home loss to New Orleans last February.
The Hornets' 2012 first overall pick, meanwhile, looks to build off his recent success following the worst stretch of his rookie season.
After averaging 4.8 points while shooting 29.0 percent over a four-game span, Davis bounced back with 21 and 11 rebounds in a 99-63 win over Portland last Wednesday and 15 points and 10 boards in a 96-87 loss to Chicago on Tuesday.
New Orleans (19-35) has also been playing better lately, winning four of its last five and 12 of 21 before losing to the Bulls.
"That's the best thing about the NBA," point guard Greivis Vasquez said. "We have another one tomorrow, and we get to get over this."
The Hornets averaged 101.0 points while hitting 29 of 62 (46.8 percent) from 3-point range over a four-game stretch before making just 4 of 17 from long range on Tuesday.
They may be able to get back on track against the Cavaliers, who have allowed 105.6 points per game on 50.5 percent shooting over their last eight.
New Orleans, though, is expected to be without Eric Gordon, who has averaged 22.0 points and made 15 of 30 from beyond the arc in five career games against Cleveland. Gordon, who had a team-high 20 points Tuesday, has not played in the second end of back-to-back games since returning from a right knee injury that cost him the first 29 games.
Following its best stretch of the season with six wins in eight games, Cleveland (16-37) stumbled into the break with three consecutive home losses.
The Cavaliers' Tristan Thompson hopes to continue his strong play from the past month. The second-year forward has averaged 15.6 points on 52.9 percent shooting in his last 14 games.
Cleveland has scored 107.7 per game - 10.7 above its season average - in its last six, and will try continue that pace against a New Orleans team that has allowed an average of 81.7 points in its last three.
The Hornets have outscored the Cavaliers by an average of 13.4 points in the paint in their three straight wins in this series, the last two of which have been in Cleveland.
