KEY GAME INFORMATION
SAN ANTONIO: LAST SEASON: 48-34, lost 4-3 to Denver in Western Conference first round.
COACH: Gregg Popovich (24th season, 1245-575).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Dejounte Murray (missed last season with knee injury), G Bryn Forbes (11.8 ppg), G DeMar DeRozan (21.2), F LaMarcus Aldridge (21.3), C Jakob Poeltl (5.5).
KEY LOSSES: None
KEY ADDITIONS: F DeMarre Carroll, F Trey Lyles, G/F Keldon Johnson, F Luka Samanic
PLAYERS TO WATCH: DeRozan spent most of last season processing a trade that unexpectedly sent him to the Spurs and away from the Toronto Raptors, the franchise he pledged his devotion to ' then watched them win a title. Murray's injury also forced DeRozan to become the team's main distributor for the first time in his career. DeRozan set a career high with 6.2 assists per game but also had his second-lowest scoring average in six seasons. Murray is back and spent the offseason sending video of specific plays to show the 30-year-old guard how he could help him score more easily.
OUTLOOK: The Spurs continue to get younger and faster while trying to maintain their veteran presence and corporate knowledge. The latter received a huge boost with the addition of Hall of Famer Tim Duncan as an assistant coach. Duncan's knowledge of the Spurs' system, work ethic and camaraderie should help the team's development as it attempts to an establish an identity separate from but similar to the Big Three era spearheaded by Duncan that led to five NBA championships. Murray's return along with the return of White, expected emergence of Lonnie Walker IV and addition of Carroll should make the Spurs among the best wing defenses in the league.
CHICAGO: LAST SEASON: 22-60, missed playoffs.
COACH: Jim Boylen (first full season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Kris Dunn (11.3 ppg), G Zach LaVine (23.7 ppg), F Otto Porter Jr. (13.9 ppg with Washington, Chicago), F Lauri Markkanen (18.7 ppg), C Wendell Carter Jr. (10.3 ppg).
KEY LOSSES: C Robin Lopez
KEY ADDITIONS: F Thaddeus Young, G Coby White, G Tom's Satoransk'
PLAYERS TO WATCH: With the All-Star Game in Chicago for the first time since 1988, Markkanen and LaVine would love a chance to perform for the home crowd. More important, getting picked would probably mean the Bulls are starting to win. Boylen would like both players to improve on defense, an area where Chicago ranked near the bottom of the NBA last season. He also wants Markkanen to become a more consistent rebounder in his third season. Dunn took a step back last season and now has competition after the Bulls drafted White with the No. 7 pick and acquired Satoransk' from Washington.
OUTLOOK: The Bulls see themselves contending for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference after posting one of the worst records in franchise history. If they stay healthy after an injury-riddled season and get the improvement they anticipate from their core players, it might not be a stretch.
PREVIEW
LaVine, Bulls look to take charge vs. Spurs

Chicago guard Zach LaVine will look to continue his hot streak when the Bulls host the San Antonio Spurs on Monday night.

LaVine is coming off a game in which he had 44 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists in a 118-106 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday. He made 16 of 30 shots from the field and 5 of 12 from beyond the arc.

Chicago (18-30) has won two of its past three games and four of seven thanks largely to LaVine's leadership. He is first on the team in scoring with an average of 25.3 points a game this season, and he has helped the Bulls compete despite the injury absences of several players, such as Wendell Carter Jr. (ankle), Otto Porter Jr. (foot) and Daniel Gafford (thumb).

"I mean, with the team, we're working every day," LaVine told reporters recently. "I think we're disappointed that we haven't won as many games as we thought, but there's still a lot of season left.

"I can understand why fans are mad -- they want to win every season. We're building to get to that point, but all you can do is just look forward to the next game and try to win that next game."

The next game is against San Antonio, which will short rest after losing 110-106 at home against the Toronto Raptors on Sunday afternoon. The game included an emotional start as both teams drew 24-second violations as a tribute to Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant, who died along with his 13-year-old daughter and seven others in a helicopter crash earlier in the day.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich applauded along with his players after both teams' 24-second violations.

"Everybody is pretty emotional about the tragedy with Kobe," Popovich told reporters. "All of us know what a great player he was, but he went beyond great playing. He was a competitor that goes unmatched. It's what made him as a player so attractive to everybody -- that focus, that competitiveness, that will to win. And even more importantly than that, we all feel a deep sense of loss for what he meant to all of us in so many ways."

Popovich, like Bryant, is an intense competitor and a multiple NBA champion. He will make his only trip of the season to Chicago, which is near where he was born (East Chicago, Ind.) and where he attended high school (Merrillville, Ind.).

The Spurs' top scorer is DeMar DeRozan, who is averaging 22.4 points per game in his second season in San Antonio. He is coming off an up-and-down game in which he shot only 4 of 9 from the field against the Raptors but finished with 14 points, which was tied with Derrick White for the team lead.
