KEY GAME INFORMATION
NEW ORLEANS: GUARDS: He's set to return from shin surgery, and the Pelicans need JRUE HOLIDAY to rescue this backcourt. He'll play as many minutes as he can handle . . . ERIC GORDON seems to be playing at half-speed. While his defense is atrocious, he's still an efficient scorer . . . Sixth man TYREKE EVANS will play solid minutes. He has the aggressiveness of an alpha, but he never developed a complete offensive game . . . The Pels seem just about done with AUSTIN RIVERS. He's still overmatched . . . RUSS SMITH could have a future as a scoring sixth man. He'll need injuries in front of him to crack this rotation . . . JIMMER FREDETTE can shoot, but can't stay on the court as arguably the league's biggest defensive liability. FORWARDS: The lone bright spot on this team, ANTHONY DAVIS is a bona fide star. He has improved defensively in space and as a rim protector, and his offensive game is coming along nicely . . . RYAN ANDERSON returns after missing most of last season with a back injury, which could potentially linger. If healthy, he'll play big minutes as a much-needed floor spacer . . . JOHN SALMONS will look to earn a rotation spot after being scooped up off waivers . . . After a few decent moments late last season, LUKE BABBITT will try to reinvent himself as a stretch-4. Unfortunately, he still can't guard anyone . . . DARIUS MILLER is still hanging around as a practice player. CENTERS: OMER ASIK provides a bodyguard for Anthony Davis. He'll also help clean up the many mistakes of this horrendous perimeter defense . . . ALEXIS AJINCA did enough late last season to warrant a look as the Pelicans No. 2 center . . . JEFF WITHEY can protect the rim, and might be able to carve out a role in his second season in head coach Monty Williams' system.
CHICAGO: GUARDS: There's no medical reason why DERRICK ROSE can't be 100 percent healthy this year. But, as we saw in abbreviated action last season, his confidence may never come back . . . JIMMY BUTLER will still play major minutes this year, though Chicago's added depth on the wing means he's no longer a candidate to lead the league in playing time . . . KIRK HINRICH will return to a straight back-up role. His defense guarantees him minutes at both guard spots in a reserve role . . . TONY SNELL was inconsistent as a rookie, but has the defensive skill set to play solid minutes . . . AARON BROOKS gives the Bulls a more offense-heavy option to lead the second unit. He has his work cut out for him to claim the role D.J. Augustin held last season. FORWARDS: Despite the rough end to his Lakers career, PAU GASOL still has something left in the tank. He will see fewer minutes in a deep Bulls frontcourt, but he's a great fit on the offensive end . . . It seems like only a matter of time before MIKE DUNLEAVY relinquishes his starting spot. The Bulls now have plenty of shooters on this roster . . . TAJ GIBSON will reprise his sixth-man role. He'll be one of the league's top reserves; talent-wise he's a borderline All-Star . . . Rookie DOUG McDERMOTT will supplant Dunleavy once he grasps head coach Tom Thibodeau's defensive concepts. McDermott is an elite shooter who can get by defensively . . . NIKOLA MIROTIC might have some growing pains, but the Euro star can play the 3 or stretch-4 and has a very good offensive game. CENTERS: JOAKIM NOAH is an elite center, as he's outstanding defensively and has developed into one of the best passing big men in the NBA. The Bulls will do what they can to keep him fresh for the postseason, a luxury they have with Gasol and Mirotic adding depth to the frontcourt rotation. NAZR MOHAMMED is back as a big body with the ability to consistently keep the bench warm.

*Pelicans-Bulls Preview* ========================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

New Orleans (14-14) at Chicago (20-9), 8:00 p.m. EDT

While the Chicago Bulls haven't scored at their current pace in almost 20 years, their next opponent is coming off a promising defensive effort against the defending champions.

The Bulls seek a season-high sixth straight win Saturday night against the New Orleans Pelicans and Anthony Davis, who will play his first game as a pro in his native Chicago.

The Central Division-leading Bulls (20-9) have also won five in a row at home - their longest such streak since an 8-0 start in 2012 - behind an average of 113.0 points on 49.0 percent shooting, including 42.7 from 3-point range.

Pau Gasol scored 23 points, Jimmy Butler added 21 and Derrick Rose 20 in Thursday's 113-93 home win over the Los Angeles Lakers. Rose has scored 24.7 per game while shooting 58.0 percent in three games since missing two with an illness, while Butler has averaged 27.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 2.7 blocks in his last three at home.

Gasol has gotten back on track with 41 points and 22 boards over his past two games after scoring a combined 20 on 4-of-14 shooting in his prior two. The veteran big man is averaging what would be a career-best 11.5 rebounds.

Although they're likely to be without Kirk Hinrich (knee), the Bulls may be as close to full strength as they've been all season. They're in the league's top 10 in scoring at 103.4 per game, which is on pace for their highest average since 1995-96.

They've also averaged 33.6 points in the fourth quarter during their overall streak.

"There's nothing better than that belief that when we're on and we're competing nobody can mess with us," said center Joakim Noah, who has averaged 16.0 points and 14.3 boards in the last three games against the Pelicans. "That's the feeling we're starting to get."

The Bulls will try to keep producing against New Orleans (15-14), which has an opportunity to move two games above .500 for the first time since Nov. 22.

The Pelicans have allowed the opposition to shoot at least 49.3 percent seven times in their last nine. However, they've given up 22.3 fourth-quarter points in the past seven after limiting San Antonio to 66 over the final three quarters of Friday's 97-90 home win.

Ryan Anderson scored 22 and Davis had 22 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks against the Spurs. Anderson had a career-high 36 points with seven 3-pointers in a 131-129 triple-overtime win in the most recent meeting in Chicago on Dec. 2, 2013.

Davis makes his long-awaited return to his hometown after he wasn't able to play in the Windy City last season because of a fractured left hand and also had to skip his only chance as a rookie due to a mild concussion.

"I'm just excited to go back home in front of friends and family and try to get a win," said Davis, who had the most votes among Western Conference frontcourt players in the first NBA All-Star Game voting returns.

The MVP candidate leads the league with 2.9 blocks per game and ranks in the top five with an average of 24.4 points. He's put up 30.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game over his last four on the road and has totaled 39 points, seven blocks and seven steals in two career meetings with the Bulls.

New Orleans swept last season's series for the first time since 2007-08.
