KEY GAME INFORMATION
NEW ORLEANS: GUARDS: JRUE HOLIDAY is perfect for head coach Monty Williams. He defends and can create in the half-court set . . . ERIC GORDON didn't want New Orleans to match his deal two offseasons ago, and he spent last year letting everyone know it. If healthy and motivated (two big 'ifs') he's a 20-point scorer . . . TYREKE EVANS will get some starts at the three and come off the bench at times. Either way, he is the kind of aggressive (if sometimes out-of- control) offensive threat this lineup needs . . . Even after an injury-filled season, ANTHONY MORROW's shooting could earn him a rotation spot . . . AUSTIN RIVERS was overmatched last season, to the point where he didn't seem to belong in the NBA. It's tough to see the win-now Pels relying on him often. FORWARDS: ANTHONY DAVIS was overwhelmed by Williams' complex defensive schemes, and opponents consistently took him out of plays with screen-and-rolls at him. Williams will surely use some of his new talent to allow Davis to roam more on defense . . . RYAN ANDERSON's defensive shortcomings could lead to a drop in playing time, but his shooting and the spacing it creates is too valuable to this offense . . . AL-FAROUQ AMINU will likely split time with Tyreke Evans at the three. He's more valuable defensively, and is starting to show some signs of improvement on offense . . . DARIUS MILLER has a shot to break into the rotation if his defense improves . . . LANCE THOMAS is a long athlete who is capable of playing some good defensive minutes . . . ARINZE ONUAKU most likely won't see the floor for more than a minute at a time. CENTERS: JASON SMITH might be their most complete defensive big man, and that should be enough to earn him solid minutes . . . GREG STIEMSMA is more off a warm body, but he at least gives them another rim-protecting option . . . JEFF WITHEY will spend most of the season on the bench learning Williams' complex schemes.
CHICAGO: GUARDS: After playing it very safe and sitting out all of last spring, DERRICK ROSE should pretty much be his old self. Of course, he'll have to knock some rust off early in the year . . . JIMMY BUTLER was an iron man during last year's playoffs, and his role will only grow this season. His defense and energy, as well as ability to get to the line, could make Luol Deng expendable . . . MIKE DUNLEAVY is in line for the sixth man role, primarily as a long-range threat . . . With Rose's return, KIRK HINRICH slides back to the bench. His playing time will be especially limited with Dunleavy taking up minutes at the two . . . MARQUIS TEAGUE will continue to be used only in garbage time unless Hinrich ends up getting hurt or traded. FORWARDS: LUOL DENG is back on the trading block, as the Bulls learned life isn't so bad without him now that Jimmy Butler has emerged. His offensive role could be slightly reduced . . . CARLOS BOOZER will likely be amnestied next summer, so for all intents and purposes this is a contract year. He's likely to still be a disaster defensively, which means he's a part-time player under defensive-minded head coach Tom Thibodeau . . . TAJ GIBSON will finish games and likely take over Boozer's spot a year from now. He's a superior defender and, while he doesn't have Boozer's range, he's a capable finisher around the rim . . . Rookie TONY SNELL is a Thibodeau kind of player, a long-armed, athletic perimeter defender. He's unlikely to ever do much on offense though. CENTERS: JOAKIM NOAH may be consistently banged up, but he's capable of playing through the pain. Depending on the Bulls' playoff position, he might sit some games late in the year, but Thibodeau isn't shy about playing him 35 minutes per night . . . NAZR MOHAMMED is back as a designated screener on offense and hacker on defense..

*Pelicans-Bulls Preview* ========================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

New Orleans (7-8) at Chicago (7-8), 8:00 p.m. EDT

The Chicago Bulls have become accustomed to playing without Derrick Rose.

The New Orleans Pelicans are about to learn what it's like being without their best player.

New Orleans travels to Chicago on Monday night for its first game since losing Anthony Davis.

Davis, the leading scorer and rebounder for the Pelicans (8-8), suffered a non-displaced fracture of his left hand in the first half of Sunday's 103-99 win over New York. It's unclear how long the injury will keep the Chicago native sidelined.

"I was going up for a lob, got fouled and then hit my hand on the rim," said Davis, who came in averaging 19.6 points, 10.6 rebounds and a league-leading 3.9 blocked shots. "I haven't found anything out yet. Most definitely I hope it's a short-term thing. I didn't think it would keep me out, but it did."

With Davis out, Ryan Anderson's play becomes even more crucial. Anderson scored a season-high 31 against New York, knocking down seven 3-pointers on 11 attempts. Despite coming off the bench, he's averaging 20.7 points and shooting a career-high 53.8 percent from 3-point range - one of the best marks in the NBA.

"When Ryan comes into the game, he doesn't think like a bench guy," coach Monty Williams said. "He thinks like 'I'm playing 35 minutes and I've got to do my job.' Obviously we don't expect him to score 31 points, but I will take it."

The Pelicans are 4-1 when he scores at least 18.

Anderson has struggled mightily over his last five matchups against Chicago, however, averaging 9.6 points on 28.6 percent shooting - including just a 20.6 percent clip from 3-point range.

The Bulls (7-8), who have won nine of the last 10 meetings, will likely be happy to return to the United Center after a 1-5 road trip. They're 5-0 in Chicago, joining Oklahoma City and Indiana as the only remaining unbeatens at home.

"Just because we're coming home doesn't mean anything," forward Taj Gibson said. "Teams tend to get a chip on their shoulder when they come into Chicago, so we have to be ready."

They suffered a 97-93 setback in Cleveland on Saturday, not able to complete a comeback try that saw them take a one-point lead with 3:59 left after trailing by 12 earlier in the fourth quarter.

Though Chicago is just 1-3 since losing Rose again - this time to a torn meniscus suffered Nov. 22 in Portland - Luol Deng continues to elevate his play, scoring 27 against the Cavaliers. He's averaging 25.0 points while shooting 54.5 percent in the last four games after averaging 15.7 points on 40.8 percent shooting in his first 11.

Jrue Holiday is averaging 25.3 points over his last four games versus Chicago, while Tyreke Evans is averaging 24.7 over his last three.

Chicago's Jimmy Butler didn't play during the road trip due to turf toe, and it's unclear when he will return. He was averaging 12.3 points in the four games immediately preceding his injury.
