| | | TORONTO: GUARDS: KYLE LOWRY is healthy again and will be handed the reigns. He could be the Raptors best player on both ends of the floor . . . As of now, JOSE CALDERON is still on the roster, but he's not long for Toronto with Lowry's arrival. He won't start over Lowry, but he could see decent minutes as the Raptors attempt to showcase him . . . With Toronto's influx of new talent, DeMAR DeROZAN could be marginalized on the offensive end. He hasn't really progressed past the dunker/raw athlete stage of his career . . . Rookie TERRENCE ROSS can just about match DeRozan's athleticism, and while he has no handle, he's a potentially deadly three-point threat . . . JOHN LUCAS III will back up both guard spots . . . ALAN ANDERSON returns as a defensive stopper in the second unit. FORWARDS: ANDREA BARGNANI makes his triumphant return and will likely go back to the perimeter. The Raptors have beefed up in the middle so Bargnani can play outside more . . . LANDRY FIELDS plays enough defense to earn minutes, but it seems like his signing was more a result of Toronto playing cap games to try to land Steve Nash. He'll likely platoon with Terrence Ross . . . ED DAVIS made some strides this offseason, but he's still not where the Raptors want him to be on the offensive end . . . LINAS KLEIZA's knee should be in better shape this season. The Raptors want more shooting, and he has a chance to grab a bigger role . . . Toronto will do everything it can to get out from under AMIR JOHNSON's contract . . . DOMINIC McGUIRE figures to occupy the final seat on the Raptors bench. CENTERS: JONAS VALANCIUNAS would have been the No. 2 pick of the draft had he come out a year later. He's a wiry, strong athlete who's physical down low with soft touch out to 10 feet. Toronto sees him as a franchise cornerstone who meshes nicely with Bargnani . . . AARON GRAY should provide ample competition for the starting center job. | | CHICAGO: GUARDS: The best guess on DERRICK ROSE is a February return. But an ACL injury usually isn't 100 percent until the second full year back . . . With Rose out, KIRK HINRICH figures to play heavy minutes early. He's a defensive specialist who will pass and watch on offense . . . NATE ROBINSON could push Hinrich for minutes. He's the offensive half of that platoon, but Thibodeau almost always leans defense . . . RICHARD HAMILTON will carry a bigger offensive load while Rose is recovering. He's a shadow of his former self . . . MARCO BELINELLI is a nice addition. He's solid defensively, and he brings the long-range shooting Chicago lacks. Don't be surprised if he pushes Hamilton . . . Rookie MARQUIS TEAGUE will mostly sit and watch this year. FORWARDS: After avoiding wrist surgery, LUOL DENG should be Chicago's top scorer while Rose is out. He's the only one on this team who even has a chance to generate his own offense . . . CARLOS BOOZER continues to be a major disappointment. In the past it's been his atrocious defense, but now he's taken a step back offensively as well. He may score more with Rose out, but he'll continue to sit late in close games . . . TAJ GIBSON should be in for a bigger role. With Omer Asik gone, he's one of only two defensively capable bigs on this roster . . . VLADIMIR RADMANOVIC will try to replace some of the three-point shooting they lost when Kyle Korver left . . . JIMMY BUTLER has a puncher's chance at a rotation spot after a good summer. CENTERS: JOAKIM NOAH was still working his way back from that badly sprained ankle this summer. His durability is questionable, but the Bulls will have to lean on Noah for more minutes now that Omer Asik is gone . . . NAZR MOHAMMED steps into Asik's role as Noah's backup. But while Asik was an active defender, Mohammed is more of just a big body with six fouls to give. |

*Raptors-Bulls Preview* =======================
By MATT BECKER STATS Editor
Toronto (29-48) at Chicago (42-34), 8:00 p.m. EDT
Playing with a depleted lineup is nothing new for the Chicago Bulls, but now their already sizable injury list is growing
Adding to those that have regularly been in street clothes - Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, Taj Gibson and Richard Hamilton - the Bulls could also be without leading scorer Luol Deng on Tuesday night against the visiting Toronto Raptors.
Injuries have been a major storyline over the last couple of months for Chicago (42-34), but through these tough times Deng has managed to stay on the court despite a nagging hip injury. As a precaution, Deng, the NBA's leader in minutes played per game at 39.1, was kept out Sunday in Detroit and is expected to be sidelined again.
The Bulls did get Noah back following an eight-game absence with an injured right foot, but he suffered a setback and will be back on the bench.
Coach Tom Thibodeau put together his 13th starting lineup of the season against the Pistons, and after a 99-85 loss - the Bulls' first to Detroit in 19 meetings - he said he'll have a new starting five in Toronto. Starting Kirk Hinrich and Nate Robinson together helped Chicago build an 11-point first-quarter lead, but later led to substitution problems and left the team with a thin bench.
The reserves combined for 12 points on 4-of-16 shooting.
Marco Belinelli could potentially start, but he returned Sunday after missing the previous seven games with an abdominal strain and his minutes will likely be limited. He missed his two field-goal attempts in 20 scoreless minutes after averaging 11.7 points in starting the previous 11 games he played.
"We've got to be focused," Thibodeau told the Bulls' official website. "We've got to concentrate and we have to give maximum effort. We have to have that edge, we've got play with great intensity. If we don't, we're in trouble. Playing with great intensity, having concentration, knowing your opponent well, that's all part of winning and we've got to get that done."
Especially with seeding and home-court advantage for a first-round playoff series on the line.
The discouraging defeat to a 52-loss Pistons team dropped the Bulls two games behind Brooklyn for fourth place in the Eastern Conference. Their lead over sixth-place Atlanta also dwindled to one.
They'll try to bounce back by winning a sixth straight game over the Raptors (29-48).
In this season's only other matchup, Deng hit a tiebreaking jump shot with three seconds left in the extra session in a 107-105 win Jan. 16. Carlos Boozer had a season-high 36 points and 12 rebounds and Deng finished with 19.
The Raptors arrive in Chicago after Saturday's 100-83 loss in Milwaukee. Rudy Gay, Toronto's leading scorer with 19.1 points per game, made 1-of-10 shots and matched his season low with four points as the Raptors trailed by as many as 32.
"We came out lethargic, had a hard time getting ourselves going," coach Dwane Casey said. "They dictated the tone of the game and we never got it back.
"I told the guys, 'If we are serious about being a playoff organization, if we are serious about it, our mental approach has to change."'
Alan Anderson led Toronto with 14 points off the bench, and Kyle Lowry scored seven. Those two came up big against the Bulls in January, as Anderson had a team-high 27 points and Lowry added 26.
These teams play again Friday in Toronto.
