|
| | | DETROIT: GUARDS: New head coach Stan Van Gundy's system is perfect for BRANDON JENNINGS, as it is heavy on high pick-and-rolls, which is where Jennings is most dangerous. He'll never be an efficient scorer . . . Detroit gave a good chunk of change to JODIE MEEKS, so he's likely to start as a spot-up shooter when he returns from a back injury in January . . . A Tskitishvili Award-winner as one of the stars of Summer League, KENTAVIOUS CALDWELL-POPE has a shot to carve out sixth-man minutes . . . After a mini-breakout with Chicago, D.J. AUGUSTIN is the insurance policy behind Jennings. He's also a great fit for Van Gundy's system . . . WILL BYNUM has been downright solid with the second unit, but he'll have to play his way back into the rotation . . . This is a redshirt season for SPENCER DINWIDDIE as he comes back from a torn ACL. FORWARDS: They'll keep shopping JOSH SMITH, who is miscast as a 3 on this roster . . . KYLE SINGLER will continue to see solid part-time minutes. He can play both wing spots and has become a good enough threat on corner threes . . . CARON BUTLER joins a crowded frontcourt. He's evolved into a three-point specialist in the latter part of his career . . . Van Gundy is a JONAS JEREBKO believer. The stretch-4 fell out of favor the past two seasons, but he has a chance to earn a big role off the bench . . . CARTIER MARTIN gives them another athletic wing who can shoot the three . . . Euro import LUIGI DATOME was a big disappointment last season. He'll have a tough time breaking into this rotation . . . TONY MITCHELL might be looking at another year in the D-League . . . GREG MONROE is an everyday double-double threat. He'll fill the stat sheet as he plays for a contract for next season. CENTERS: ANDRE DRUMMOND is a monster on the boards with Defensive Player of the Year upside once he improves in space. Offensively, he can dunk but not much else . . . AARON GRAY is here to fill out the roster once he's cleared to return from his heart problems. | | CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: LANCE STEPHENSON started chucking and padding stats after missing the All-Star team last season, fueling Indiana's collapse. He's a potentially solid role player, but if he tries to be the alpha for the Hornets, it could be a long season . . . KEMBA WALKER has become a solid playmaker, though he'll lose some touches while playing alongside Stephenson . . . The Hornets seem to be done with GERALD HENDERSON, who will stay in the rotation, but see a reduced role with all the Hornets' offseason acquisitions . . . GARY NEAL can play both guard spots as a high-scoring sixth man . . . P.J. HAIRSTON needs to stay out of trouble off the court if he's to have any chance of becoming a three-point specialist off the bench . . . BRIAN ROBERTS steps in as a No. 3 point guard. FORWARDS: Charlotte reloaded in the frontcourt, but MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST will likely claim a starting job due to his defense. It's probably time to accept that MKG will never have much of an offensive game . . . CODY ZELLER will have every opportunity to grab a starting job early on. Unfortunately, his inability to score in traffic limits his effectiveness . . . MARVIN WILLIAMS will see major minutes at both forward spots. He's a capable defender who has added a three-point shot to his repertoire . . . He's still a teenager, so he may not carve out major minutes this year, but NOAH VONLEH has by far the most upside among their 4's and 5's. He's a potentially elite stretch-4 . . . JEFF TAYLOR's Achilles is close to 100 percent. He has a shot to re-claim a rotation spot. CENTERS: AL JEFFERSON is a flawed player, but he gives Charlotte exactly what the team is looking for: A low-post threat on the offensive end of the court. Like Walker, he'll also suffer a bit with Stephenson coming in, but he's still the focal point of this offense . . . He's not quite a bust because he can defend, but BISMACK BIYOMBO hasn't shown any semblance of an offensive game. |

*Pistons-Hornets Preview* =========================
By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer
Detroit (28-45) at Charlotte (31-42), 7:00 p.m. EDT
Although the Charlotte Hornets are doing nearly everything they can to quit the playoff race, the weak Eastern Conference seems to be refusing their resignation letter.
If they can win for just the fourth time in 13 games Wednesday night against the visiting Detroit Pistons, the Hornets could climb within a game of the conference's No. 8 spot. A loss, however, would drop them 1 1/2 behind 12th-place Detroit.
Charlotte (31-42) missed a chance to make up ground with Monday's 116-104 home loss to Boston, which sits 1 1/2 games ahead in the No. 9 spot. Brooklyn is one-half game ahead of the Celtics in eighth, while 10th-place Indiana is a full game behind Boston.
The Hornets, meanwhile, are a half-game back of the Pacers and two off the Nets' pace. Seventh-place Miami has dropped four of six and is only one-half up on Brooklyn, so no one is making anything too difficult for those in pursuit.
Against Boston, Kemba Walker had 28 points and 12 assists, but the point guard recognizes the team is running out of chances.
"It was a huge game for us," he said. "It's definitely a little disappointing."
Mo Williams had 19 points off the bench and is averaging 21.0 in his last three, while Gerald Henderson had 17 and is averaging the same over seven games.
The Hornets have needed the increased production with Michael Kidd-Gilchrist having missed two games with an ankle injury. He won't face Detroit and Cody Zeller is questionable after missing 10 of 11 with a shoulder ailment.
Lance Stephenson didn't see the floor, either, but that was a coach's decision. In his first season of a three-year deal, Stephenson played a season-low eight minutes in Saturday's 115-100 win over Atlanta, and his role has been in decline since starting the first 25 games of the season.
"I think the biggest thing for him is he's 23 and this is the first time he's gone somewhere different," coach Steve Clifford said. "He's played for the same team and same coach for four years with the same basic offensive and defensive structure."
For Detroit (29-45), Greg Monroe is questionable with a knee injury that has cost him eight games, but center Andre Drummond has stepped up with 18.5 points and 14.4 rebounds in that span. Drummond had 22 points and 13 rebounds in Tuesday's 105-95 home win over Atlanta to help Detroit win for the sixth time in those eight games.
The Pistons have also seen increased production out of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who has averaged 18.6 points over the same eight-game stretch.
Their go-to guy more often than not lately, though, has been Reggie Jackson. Caldwell-Pope's backcourt mate had 12 points and 11 assists against the Hawks and has averaged 21.3 points and 11.4 assist in eight games.
He's also making good decisions with the ball while shooting 50.4 percent - including 46.2 from 3-point range - and posting an assist-to-turnover ratio of 4.33. Jackson was limited some Tuesday due to illness.
"I was a little under the weather, and I felt it before the game, but I tried to give the guys everything I could," Jackson said.
The Hornets have won four of five against the Pistons, including a 108-101 victory in Detroit on March 8. The season series began with Detroit rolling to a 106-78 win at Charlotte on Feb. 10 and concludes April 12 at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
