KEY GAME INFORMATION
LA LAKERS: GUARDS: At 36 and coming off multiple injuries, it seems unlikely that vintage KOBE BRYANT will ever return. Still, he'll get to the line enough to be among the league's scoring leaders . . . JEREMY LIN will start and be useful when his streaky shot gets hot . . . NICK YOUNG demanded the Lakers re-sign him, and what Swaggy P wants, Swaggy P gets (after L.A. struck out on every free agent). He'll miss the first couple weeks of the season as he recovers from thumb surgery . . . XAVIER HENRY will try to establish himself as a deep threat off the bench . . . JORDAN CLARKSON is the kind of big guard they've paired with Bryant over the years. He could be a year or two away from contributing . . . STEVE NASH is out for the season with a back injury. He's likely played his last game as a member of the Lakers. FORWARDS: You know it's been a rough offseason when CARLOS BOOZER, who no contending team wanted, is your prize. He's still a zero at the defensive end, but Boozer can shoot from mid-range and could see more minutes in a thin L.A. frontcourt . . . WESLEY JOHNSON gives them a spot-up shooter on the wing who brings some defensive versatility . . . They'll probably pair Boozer and teenager JULIUS RANDLE together often. The rookie has drawn comparisons to Zach Randolph . . . RYAN KELLY is a serviceable stretch-4 for the second unit. CENTERS: JORDAN HILL will see time at the 4 and 5 spots. His per-minute rates are strong, but his stamina is not . . . C'mon, who doesn't like ED DAVIS? . . . The Lakers will likely use Boozer, Hill and Davis as undersized centers, because entering the year they only have lead-footed ROBERT SACRE as a true 5. He's not a candidate to play more than 20 minutes per night.
CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: LANCE STEPHENSON started chucking and padding stats after missing the All-Star team last season, fueling Indiana's collapse. He's a potentially solid role player, but if he tries to be the alpha for the Hornets, it could be a long season . . . KEMBA WALKER has become a solid playmaker, though he'll lose some touches while playing alongside Stephenson . . . The Hornets seem to be done with GERALD HENDERSON, who will stay in the rotation, but see a reduced role with all the Hornets' offseason acquisitions . . . GARY NEAL can play both guard spots as a high-scoring sixth man . . . P.J. HAIRSTON needs to stay out of trouble off the court if he's to have any chance of becoming a three-point specialist off the bench . . . BRIAN ROBERTS steps in as a No. 3 point guard. FORWARDS: Charlotte reloaded in the frontcourt, but MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST will likely claim a starting job due to his defense. It's probably time to accept that MKG will never have much of an offensive game . . . CODY ZELLER will have every opportunity to grab a starting job early on. Unfortunately, his inability to score in traffic limits his effectiveness . . . MARVIN WILLIAMS will see major minutes at both forward spots. He's a capable defender who has added a three-point shot to his repertoire . . . He's still a teenager, so he may not carve out major minutes this year, but NOAH VONLEH has by far the most upside among their 4's and 5's. He's a potentially elite stretch-4 . . . JEFF TAYLOR's Achilles is close to 100 percent. He has a shot to re-claim a rotation spot. CENTERS: AL JEFFERSON is a flawed player, but he gives Charlotte exactly what the team is looking for: A low-post threat on the offensive end of the court. Like Walker, he'll also suffer a bit with Stephenson coming in, but he's still the focal point of this offense . . . He's not quite a bust because he can defend, but BISMACK BIYOMBO hasn't shown any semblance of an offensive game.

*Lakers-Hornets Preview* ========================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

Los Angeles (16-42) at Charlotte (24-33), 7:00 p.m. EDT

The Charlotte Hornets' acquisition of Mo Williams has helped them recapture the scoring punch they've missed since losing Kemba Walker.

Williams will look to take advantage of one of the league's worst defenses Tuesday night when Charlotte hosts the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Hornets (24-33) averaged 89.1 points in their first eight games after losing Walker to a torn meniscus. He had been averaging a career-high 18.8 points while Charlotte was at 95.2 per game.

The Hornets are averaging 95.6 in five games since Williams' arrival from Minnesota. He is scoring 23.4 points per game on 42.2 percent 3-point shooting with his new team, which had been shooting an NBA worst 30.8 percent from beyond the arc.

Williams scored 23 and was 4 of 7 from deep in Sunday's 98-83 win at Orlando. Though the 12th-year guard has averaged 18.2 shots per game with Charlotte after never averaging more than 15.4 in a season, he's also averaging 7.0 assists and recorded 11 against the Magic as the Hornets shot at least 50.0 percent for only the third time.

After dropping their first two with Williams, the Hornets have won two of three and seem to playing more cohesively.

"I certainly didn't expect him to score like this so consistently," coach Steve Clifford said. "I thought he would play smart ... and he's very verbal, good with his teammates. But he's been so efficient offensively."

Williams has proven to be more than a viable stopgap in Walker's absence for the Hornets, who are one of six Eastern Conference teams likely vying for the seventh and eighth seeds. Walker, who had surgery on Jan. 28, is set to be evaluated Wednesday.

Williams scored 25 and hit 6 of 8 3-pointers versus Los Angeles in a Nov. 28 road win with Minnesota.

Charlotte lost 107-92 in Los Angeles on Nov. 9, however. The Hornets have dropped six of seven in the series, averaging 87.8 points in the defeats.

The Lakers (16-42), who allow an NBA-high 106.1 points per game, lost 108-101 at home Sunday to Oklahoma City, which was without Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant. They held Oklahoma City to 41.2 percent shooting but surrendered a combined 32 points to D.J. Augustin and Jeremy Lamb.

"We fought hard and still made a push at it, but just came up short," said Wayne Ellington, who scored 12. "They didn't have K.D. and they didn't have Russ, so it was time for other guys to step up for them."

Los Angeles gave up 16 offensive rebounds leading to 20 second-chance points for the Thunder. Over the last six games, opponents have averaged 13.8 offensive boards - 3.0 more than their season average.

While the Hornets are one of the league's least threatening offensive rebounding teams with 10.1 per game, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist has recorded three straight double-doubles for the first time in his career. He has averaged 13.6 points while shooting at least 50.0 percent in 10 straight games.

The Lakers have been without Nick Young (13.4 ppg) for three games due to a sore left knee, though Jeremy Lin is averaging 17.0 points in his last five games. He has averaged 15.7 points in his last three meetings with Charlotte while shooting 68.0 percent.

Los Angeles had dropped a franchise-worst 11 consecutive road games before winning last Wednesday at Utah. The Lakers have taken the last two in Charlotte, and earned a 107-92 home win over the Hornets on Nov. 9, their sixth victory in seven meetings.
