KEY GAME INFORMATION
DENVER: GUARDS: TY LAWSON is the facilitator in Denver's up-tempo offense. Durability is a concern, as he missed 15-plus games for the third time in five career seasons during the 2013-14 campaign . . . ARRON AFFLALO is what the Nuggets need. He'll be a No. 3 scorer and, more importantly, gives them a big defensive upgrade . . . Denver can't afford to play RANDY FOYE so many minutes. He's a serviceable reserve, but they won't win games if he's playing 30-plus minutes . . . The Afflalo acquisition blocks him, but GARY HARRIS is tough-nosed on defense and a solid deep threat . . . NATE ROBINSON might unseat Foye for the sixth-man role by midseason, but first he'll have to work his way back from a torn ACL . . . Combo guard ERICK GREEN will pick up garbage-time minutes. FORWARDS: KENNETH FARIED is one of the few bright spots in Denver. He can't generate his own offense, but he's effective filling lanes and picking up garbage points in this system . . . If he's ever 100 percent healthy again, DANILO GALLINARI will be the go-to scorer on this team. But he's a question mark after missing all of last season with a torn ACL . . . WILSON CHANDLER won't be relied on as heavily this season, but he's going to get major minutes as a floor spacer who can play the 2-guard or either forward spot . . . Stretch-4 DARRELL ARTHUR is a solid rotation guy when he's shooting well, but he was laying bricks last season . . . QUINCY MILLER has intriguing athleticism, but remains a raw project . . . Even if he wasn't coming off a torn ACL, J.J. HICKSON would not make this rotation. CENTERS: TIMOFEY MOZGOV may have grabbed the lead in this center-by-committee group with his strong finish to last season . . . A stress fracture cost JaVALE McGEE his chance to secure a full-time role last season. The tantalizing, but consistently disappointing, big man should make the rotation, but has an uphill battle to earn minutes . . . JUSUF NURKIC is a high-upside project as a 7-footer with a legit NBA offensive skill set.
CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: LANCE STEPHENSON started chucking and padding stats after missing the All-Star team last season, fueling Indiana's collapse. He's a potentially solid role player, but if he tries to be the alpha for the Hornets, it could be a long season . . . KEMBA WALKER has become a solid playmaker, though he'll lose some touches while playing alongside Stephenson . . . The Hornets seem to be done with GERALD HENDERSON, who will stay in the rotation, but see a reduced role with all the Hornets' offseason acquisitions . . . GARY NEAL can play both guard spots as a high-scoring sixth man . . . P.J. HAIRSTON needs to stay out of trouble off the court if he's to have any chance of becoming a three-point specialist off the bench . . . BRIAN ROBERTS steps in as a No. 3 point guard. FORWARDS: Charlotte reloaded in the frontcourt, but MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST will likely claim a starting job due to his defense. It's probably time to accept that MKG will never have much of an offensive game . . . CODY ZELLER will have every opportunity to grab a starting job early on. Unfortunately, his inability to score in traffic limits his effectiveness . . . MARVIN WILLIAMS will see major minutes at both forward spots. He's a capable defender who has added a three-point shot to his repertoire . . . He's still a teenager, so he may not carve out major minutes this year, but NOAH VONLEH has by far the most upside among their 4's and 5's. He's a potentially elite stretch-4 . . . JEFF TAYLOR's Achilles is close to 100 percent. He has a shot to re-claim a rotation spot. CENTERS: AL JEFFERSON is a flawed player, but he gives Charlotte exactly what the team is looking for: A low-post threat on the offensive end of the court. Like Walker, he'll also suffer a bit with Stephenson coming in, but he's still the focal point of this offense . . . He's not quite a bust because he can defend, but BISMACK BIYOMBO hasn't shown any semblance of an offensive game.

*Nuggets-Hornets Preview* =========================

By BRETT HUSTON STATS Senior Editor

Denver (12-15) at Charlotte (8-19), 7:00 p.m. EDT

The Charlotte Hornets can't seem to find an offer acceptable enough to make Lance Stephenson go away for good, but his temporary absence certainly appears to have given Steve Clifford's club a spark.

With Stephenson still sidelined due to a sprained pelvis, the Hornets look for a season-high third straight win Monday night against the visiting Denver Nuggets.

Reports over the past week suggested that Charlotte (8-19) has put Stephenson on the trade block just five months after signing the former Pacers swingman to a three-year, $27 million deal.

They apparently haven't been impressed with any offer and have for now decided to keep Stephenson, who's shooting 38.6 percent overall, 15.1 percent from 3-point range and reportedly clashing with teammates.

Stephenson hasn't been on the court to disagree with anyone for the last two - Clifford says he's out until after Christmas - and the Hornets have looked better. After winning just twice in 16 games, Charlotte forced 24 turnovers in a 109-91 win Friday at Philadelphia, then held Utah to 38.3 percent shooting Saturday in a 104-86 victory.

"Our defense was a lot better both games," Clifford said. "We're trying a lot harder on defense."

Kemba Walker, who was shooting 36.0 percent for the season through Dec. 10, has connected on 51.3 percent of his field-goal attempts in his last four games. After putting up 30 against the 76ers, he had 20 points, six assists without a turnover and a season-high four steals on Saturday.

"I'm not saying he's at an entirely different level, but his defense, his organizational skills as a point guard and his pick and roll game all year is better," Clifford said. "He did so much in the summer that he's a totally different player."

The Hornets are hoping a mild groin strain won't make Al Jefferson a different player after he left Saturday's contest with six minutes remaining. Jefferson had 19 points and 10 rebounds - his third straight game with at least 19 and 10 - and said he could have returned had the score been closer.

Denver (12-15) certainly wouldn't mind seeing Jefferson take a night off Monday, though he's considered probable. The big man put up 61 points and 24 rebounds as Charlotte swept last season's series - winning one of those with Walker sidelined.

The Nuggets are dealing with some key injuries heading into this one, including another potentially devastating blow for Danilo Gallinari. Just a day after watching him score a season-high 19 points off the bench in a 76-73 win over Indiana, Denver announced Sunday that Gallinari tore the meniscus in his right knee and will undergo surgery, though he could miss as few as three weeks.

It was an ACL tear in Gallinari's left knee that cost him all of last season.

Randy Foye (quad) and JaVale McGee (leg) are still out with long-term injuries. Darrell Arthur is questionable for Monday's game with a leg injury.

Though the Nuggets will be short-handed as they begin a two-game, two-day trip that ends in Brooklyn with their fourth in five nights, coach Brian Shaw isn't thinking past Monday's contest.

"Charlotte's a team that swept us last year," Shaw said. "It's still fresh in my mind, even if our guys haven't remembered that."

Timofey Mozgov gave Denver a lift Saturday, grabbing 15 rebounds and matching a career high with five blocks as the Nuggets outscored the Pacers 48-18 in the paint.

The Nuggets are 9-6 when they outscore their opponent in the lane, but they lost both meetings with Charlotte last season despite a 102-64 edge.
