KEY GAME INFORMATION
PORTLAND: GUARDS: DAMIAN LILLARD might be the most complete offensive point guard in the NBA. He's a legitimately great shooter, and quick enough off the dribble to get wherever he wants inside the paint . . . WESLEY MATTHEWS runs, runs and runs off the ball as a spot-up shooter . . . STEVE BLAKE is most likely to absorb Mo Williams' old sixth-man role. He can take some ball-handling duties, but at this point his value is as a spot-up shooter . . . He had his rookie season erased by injuries, and it's a crowded rotation, but C.J. McCOLLUM might be able to shoot his way into significant minutes . . . WILL BARTON is a practice player unless he develops a three-point shot . . . ALLEN CRABBE will likely bounce between Portland and the D-League again. FORWARDS: LaMARCUS ALDRIDGE's combination of length and mid-range shooting makes him virtually unguardable when he's on . . . NICOLAS BATUM often runs the offense with Lillard working off the ball. Batum can shoot, too. There's no real weakness in his game . . . He tore a thumb ligament during Summer League play, but THOMAS ROBINSON is already back on the court. He's a hustle guy off the bench, but has a limited offensive game and can't defend bigger 4's . . . DORELL WRIGHT will likely bounce in and out of the rotation again due to his streaky shooting . . . JOEL FREELAND's skill set is limited, but he can play the 4 and the 5 . . . VICTOR CLAVER will try to work his way back into the rotation as a defensive specialist. CENTERS: ROBIN LOPEZ proved a perfect complement to Aldridge, and should handle the bulk of the minutes at center again . . . CHRIS KAMAN gives Portland s a more offensive-minded option off the bench . . . It will be another developmental season for MEYERS LEONARD
CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: LANCE STEPHENSON started chucking and padding stats after missing the All-Star team last season, fueling Indiana's collapse. He's a potentially solid role player, but if he tries to be the alpha for the Hornets, it could be a long season . . . KEMBA WALKER has become a solid playmaker, though he'll lose some touches while playing alongside Stephenson . . . The Hornets seem to be done with GERALD HENDERSON, who will stay in the rotation, but see a reduced role with all the Hornets' offseason acquisitions . . . GARY NEAL can play both guard spots as a high-scoring sixth man . . . P.J. HAIRSTON needs to stay out of trouble off the court if he's to have any chance of becoming a three-point specialist off the bench . . . BRIAN ROBERTS steps in as a No. 3 point guard. FORWARDS: Charlotte reloaded in the frontcourt, but MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST will likely claim a starting job due to his defense. It's probably time to accept that MKG will never have much of an offensive game . . . CODY ZELLER will have every opportunity to grab a starting job early on. Unfortunately, his inability to score in traffic limits his effectiveness . . . MARVIN WILLIAMS will see major minutes at both forward spots. He's a capable defender who has added a three-point shot to his repertoire . . . He's still a teenager, so he may not carve out major minutes this year, but NOAH VONLEH has by far the most upside among their 4's and 5's. He's a potentially elite stretch-4 . . . JEFF TAYLOR's Achilles is close to 100 percent. He has a shot to re-claim a rotation spot. CENTERS: AL JEFFERSON is a flawed player, but he gives Charlotte exactly what the team is looking for: A low-post threat on the offensive end of the court. Like Walker, he'll also suffer a bit with Stephenson coming in, but he's still the focal point of this offense . . . He's not quite a bust because he can defend, but BISMACK BIYOMBO hasn't shown any semblance of an offensive game.

*Trail Blazers-Hornets Preview* ===============================

By JACK CASSIDY STATS Writer

Portland (11-3) at Charlotte (4-11), 7:00 p.m. EDT

Strong defensive play has helped key the Portland Trail Blazers' recent success, but they needed to rely on offense to extend the longest current winning streak in the NBA their last time out.

The Blazers seek their ninth straight victory when they visit the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday night.

Portland (11-3) came into its latest contest having allowed 88.8 points per game in its previous four victories, but suffered defensive lapses against winless Philadelphia and needed to rally from a two-point halftime deficit for a 114-104 victory Monday.

"Well, road wins are tough in this league," coach Terry Stotts said. "To be able to come back against a team that was really, playing with some desperation - it means a lot to get a win a like that. We weren't clicking on all cylinders."

LaMarcus Aldridge had 33 points and 11 rebounds for the Blazers, who had given up an average of 104.8 points in four contests Nov. 8-12 - a stretch that preceded their recent stingy four-game span.

Portland leads the league with 47.7 rebounds per game and ranks near the top with 104.4 points scored and 95.3 allowed.

"I think our defense has been the one constant throughout (the winning streak)," Stotts told the team's official website. "It's good to know that we have that."

The Blazers are looking for their second victory over the Hornets this month, having won 102-100 at home Nov. 11 behind 25 points and 14 rebounds from Aldridge and a game-high 29 points from Lillard.

Charlotte (4-11) has lost six straight, averaging 89.7 points and 42.6 percent shooting during that span.

Cody Zeller scored 17 points Monday, but Charlotte shot 2 for 20 from 3-point range and no Hornets player recorded more than nine boards in a 113-92 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. The Hornets were outrebounded 43-33.

Coach Steve Clifford still found positives in the performances of Kemba Walker, who scored 15 points with six assists, and Al Jefferson, who had 16 points - though Jefferson failed to reach the 20-point mark for the first time in four games, and Walker was 0 for 4 from beyond the arc and shot 4 of 11 overall.

"We can't lose our spirit," Clifford said. "To be a good team in this league it takes a lot of things but your best players have to be prideful and hard players. Al and Kemba tonight showed again they're going to fight for this and they're going to try hard to get this turned around."

Charlotte has allowed opponents to shoot 49.5 percent during its skid. Los Angeles went 15 of 32 on 3-pointers Monday.

"They shot the ball well," Clifford said. "But the next teams coming in here shoot the ball just as well or better. That's what's scary."

Portland is 35-14 all-time against the Hornets and has won nine of 11 matchups. The Hornets took the last home meeting 124-94 on March 22, but Aldridge didn't play.
