KEY GAME INFORMATION
MEMPHIS: GUARDS: So much for head coach David Joerger picking up the tempo. MIKE CONLEY has become a much better half-court player, a requirement on this team . . . COURTNEY LEE will likely be the offensive side of their 2-guard platoon, as he was late last season . . . He lost some minutes late last season, but there's still a part-time role for TONY ALLEN . . . VINCE CARTER will take over Mike Miller's old role, a floor spacer at both wing spots . . . The Grizzlies blocked NICK CALATHES' move back to Europe to keep him around for point guard depth. He is suspended for the first 13 games of the season . . . JORDAN ADAMS comes from UCLA with a strong statistical profile. He might not break into the rotation as a rookie, though . . . BENO UDRIH bought himself another season with strong postseason play. FORWARDS: ZACH RANDOLPH remains the go-to scorer in Memphis. And he's playing for what might be his last big NBA payday . . . TAYSHAUN PRINCE has faded fast, and his expiring contract might be his greatest asset right now . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER returns after missing most of last season with a stress fracture in his foot. He'll have to battle his way back into the rotation after the acquisition of Vince Carter . . . Second-rounder JARNELL STOKES has a football player's build and is quick around the basket, but he could be looking at a season spent mostly in the D-League . . . JON LEUER is still doing Jon Leuer things, shooting well from long range and grabbing occasional rebounds. CENTERS: MARC GASOL will earn a max contract if he keeps playing at this level. Along with very good defense, he's become a valuable facilitator for this team on the offensive end of the court . . . KOSTA KOUFOS is one of the league's better back-up centers. He fits well in the Grizzlies' slow-tempo system.
CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: LANCE STEPHENSON started chucking and padding stats after missing the All-Star team last season, fueling Indiana's collapse. He's a potentially solid role player, but if he tries to be the alpha for the Hornets, it could be a long season . . . KEMBA WALKER has become a solid playmaker, though he'll lose some touches while playing alongside Stephenson . . . The Hornets seem to be done with GERALD HENDERSON, who will stay in the rotation, but see a reduced role with all the Hornets' offseason acquisitions . . . GARY NEAL can play both guard spots as a high-scoring sixth man . . . P.J. HAIRSTON needs to stay out of trouble off the court if he's to have any chance of becoming a three-point specialist off the bench . . . BRIAN ROBERTS steps in as a No. 3 point guard. FORWARDS: Charlotte reloaded in the frontcourt, but MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST will likely claim a starting job due to his defense. It's probably time to accept that MKG will never have much of an offensive game . . . CODY ZELLER will have every opportunity to grab a starting job early on. Unfortunately, his inability to score in traffic limits his effectiveness . . . MARVIN WILLIAMS will see major minutes at both forward spots. He's a capable defender who has added a three-point shot to his repertoire . . . He's still a teenager, so he may not carve out major minutes this year, but NOAH VONLEH has by far the most upside among their 4's and 5's. He's a potentially elite stretch-4 . . . JEFF TAYLOR's Achilles is close to 100 percent. He has a shot to re-claim a rotation spot. CENTERS: AL JEFFERSON is a flawed player, but he gives Charlotte exactly what the team is looking for: A low-post threat on the offensive end of the court. Like Walker, he'll also suffer a bit with Stephenson coming in, but he's still the focal point of this offense . . . He's not quite a bust because he can defend, but BISMACK BIYOMBO hasn't shown any semblance of an offensive game.

*Grizzlies-Hornets Preview* ===========================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Memphis (1-0) at Charlotte (1-0), 7:00 p.m. EDT

The Memphis Grizzlies' Marc Gasol has earned a reputation as one of the NBA's best defensive players but he's shown some more skill at the other end of the court early this season.

Gasol will try to provide another high-scoring effort while leading the visiting Grizzlies to their first 3-0 start Saturday night against the Charlotte Hornets.

Gasol was the league's 2012-13 defensive player of the year and a knee injury that kept him out 23 games might have prevented him from another spot on one of the league's all-defensive teams last season. The Grizzlies went 40-19 with him on the floor in 2013-14.

The Grizzlies have won two more games this season with Gasol on the court and he scored a career-high 32 points on 12-of-17 shooting in Wednesday's opener, a 105-101 home win over Minnesota. The center, who has never averaged more than 14.6 points in his previous six seasons, followed with 20 in a 97-89 victory in Indiana on Friday.

Zach Randolph had 22 points and 13 rebounds as the Grizzlies opened 2-0 for the first time since 2000-01, their final season in Vancouver, and for just the third time ever. They outscored the Pacers 33-14 in the third quarter with Randolph scoring 11 points after trailing by eight at halftime.

Mike Conley chipped in 17 points despite missing 13 of 19 shots.

"Everyone contributed tonight, and it was a good game," Randolph said. "We've just got to keep playing. We've got a big one (Saturday)."

Memphis has won five of seven over Charlotte (1-0) but lost 92-89 in last season's lone trip to Time Warner Cable Arena on Feb. 22. The Grizzlies took the most recent matchup, 111-89 at home March 8.

Memphis will face a team with a new name in this game with the Bobcats era now over in Charlotte. The return of the Hornets' nickname to the city was followed by a 108-106 overtime victory over Milwaukee on Wednesday that featured the largest comeback in Charlotte's NBA history.

After agreeing to a four-year contract extension the previous day, Kemba Walker had 26 points while leading his team back from a 24-point deficit in the third quarter. He made a tying 3-pointer with 1.6 seconds left in regulation and the go-ahead shot with five seconds remaining in the extra period despite dealing with cramps in his right foot.

"To me, he's a core member. He's a leader of our group. I think that he has intangibles that are very rare in any league," coach Steve Clifford said. "He just has a natural competitiveness, a spirit about him, that other people draw on."

Charlotte had its only 2-0 start as the Bobcats in 2007-08 and the Charlotte Hornets won their first two games in 1999-2000 and 2001-02, their final season before leaving for New Orleans.

Walker had 31 points in the February win over the Grizzlies, his first in five games in the series, and helped Charlotte avoid a third consecutive home loss to Memphis.

Conley is averaging 19.2 points and shooting 50.7 percent in his last five matchups with Charlotte, and can help Memphis match its best road start in franchise history. The Grizzlies began 2-0 away from home for the only time in 2000-01.
