KEY GAME INFORMATION
MIAMI: GUARDS: The regular season goal for DWYANE WADE is to just stay healthy. Even following knee surgery, he's still good enough to pile up numbers, but the minutes won't be there in the regular season . . . That's why the Heat brought in RAY ALLEN. He and Wade will share the floor at times, but Allen should primarily play off the bench. His role will be to knock down the wide-open threes Wade and LeBron James create . . . After all the big plays he made in the postseason, MARIO CHALMERS is entrenched as the starting point guard, despite being plagued by a bad hammy in the preseason . . . Super-quick NORRIS COLE looks like he'll become one of the NBA's better backup point guards . . . If he doesn't retire, the absurdly brittle MIKE MILLER will see limited regular-season minutes . . . TERREL HARRIS will likely make the team because he's willing to play defense. FORWARDS: While another title is their No. 1 priority, LeBRON JAMES has shown no need to rest during the regular season. He'll play full-time minutes and be in the thick of the MVP race . . . CHRIS BOSH remains integral to the offense with his ability to pull opposing bigs away from the basket. His stats don't reflect his actual value . . . SHANE BATTIER will continue to be a defensive specialist whose offensive role is limited to shooting open threes . . . UDONIS HASLEM is another guy who will get held back in the regular season. He should lead their low-post rotation . . . RASHARD LEWIS' knee problems have robbed him of athleticism . . . But Lewis should beat out fellow shooter JAMES JONES for a rotation spot . . . JARVIS VARNADO is a shot-blocking force with little to no offensive game. CENTERS: JOEL ANTHONY will continue to tag-team with Haslem in the middle. Anthony is an absolute negative on the offensive end, but he brings more size and shot-blocking than Haslem . . . DEXTER PITTMAN will be battling for a roster spot. Sexy Dexy has shown no signs of being an NBA-caliber player so far in his career . . . MICKELL GLADNESS is a better alternative than Pittman on both ends of the floor.
CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: RAMON SESSIONS will have to adjust to a major downgrade in teammates, but he has the kind of versatile offensive skill set to be the focal point of this offense . . . The athletic GERALD HENDERSON has made strides the past two seasons. Realistically, his offensive skills are those of a No. 4 or 5 option . . . Coach Mike Dunlap is high on KEMBA WALKER, who was sometimes overwhelmed as a rookie. With a few new sets built in for him, he could thrive as a sixth man getting starter's minutes . . . BEN GORDON won't overtake Henderson, but should see big minutes as the Cats' only shooter . . . REGGIE WILLIAMS is a D-League talent . . . MATT CARROLL, in the final year of his $27 million deal, symbolizes everything that's gone wrong under Michael Jordan. FORWARDS: Drafting MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST was as much about changing the losing culture as it was adding a piece they needed. MKG's statistical output is a question mark, but he'll see big minutes as a defensive stopper and intangibles guy . . . This team is seriously lacking in the post, where they may have no choice but to play TYRUS THOMAS for significant minutes. The talented but uber-underachieving big man claims to have added 20 pounds of muscle in the offseason. If nothing else, they might showcase him in a desperate attempt to get some trade value . . . Rookie JEFFERY TAYLOR figures to make the team and has the versatility and athleticism to be a respectable second-unit guy. CENTERS: Charlotte sees BISMACK BIYOMBO as a franchise cornerstone. He can certainly rebound and block shots, but his offense is atrocious . . . BRENDAN HAYWOOD brings a veteran presence. At his age he can't go more than 15 or so minutes per night . . . BYRON MULLENS never saw a shot he didn't like. He'll get one more chance to prove he's an NBA rotation player, able to play the four or five . . . DeSAGANA DIOP is doing those things that DeSagana Diop does.

*Heat-Bobcats Preview* ======================

By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer

Miami (58-16) at Charlotte (18-57), 8:00 p.m. EDT

With the playoffs fast approaching, the Miami Heat are being extremely cautious with their most important assets.

LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Mario Chalmers and reserve Ray Allen could all be held out Friday night as the visiting Heat go for a 12th consecutive win over the NBA-worst Charlotte Bobcats.

While James (hamstring) and Chalmers (ankle) went through some on-court work during Thursday's non-contact practice, Allen (ankle) and Wade (ankle) were mostly limited to stretching and conditioning. All four injuries are considered minor, but the Heat (58-16) want to make sure they're healthy come the playoffs as they set out to defend their title.

All four players will be evaluated again Friday.

"This was a good step, but it was a minor step also. So I don't anticipate those guys playing. We'll see," said coach Erik Spoelstra, whose team has already clinched the Eastern Conference's top seed.

"We still have time to work on our game. We want our guys to get rhythm. But they have to deal with these minor injuries right now. We're being very proactive and very aggressive. We're going to take care of them."

Chalmers has missed the last three games while Wade and James missed the last two. Allen, meanwhile, was hurt during Tuesday's 102-90 loss to New York.

"We want to get those guys back as soon as possible," Udonis Haslem said. "But we have some time, eight games left? We have some time to get them back."

If James, Wade, Chalmers and Allen can't play, Miami would likely start Norris Cole and Mike Miller in the backcourt, Haslem and Rashard Lewis at forward and Chris Bosh at center. Bosh, averaging 16.7 points, has scored 23 in each of the last two games.

"The No. 1 thing, obviously, is try to get as healthy as we can," Spoelstra said. "Obviously, that's a priority. From there, we have time to still try to improve - not just stay in rhythm, but to improve, and also get these guys an opportunity that haven't been getting minutes to play in these meaningful minutes."

Even without its top players, Miami should still have a good chance against Charlotte (18-57). The Heat have outscored the Bobcats by average of 14.7 points during their run in the series, including a 109-77 rout March 24.

James had 32 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds that day while Wade sat out due to knee troubles. James has combined for 63 points on 24-of-28 shooting (85.7 percent) in his last two matchups versus Charlotte.

Although the Bobcats average 93.5 points to rank 27th in the league, they have posted 103.2 in winning five of six at home. Charlotte, though, used a stifling defensive display to beat Philadelphia 88-83 on Wednesday, holding the 76ers to 35.1 percent shooting.

"We rotated, we helped, we talked and we were together," said Kemba Walker, who had 17 points, 10 assists and five steals. "That's what it's all about. If a guy gets beat, he expects a teammate to help him. That's what we did."

Gerald Henderson also came up big again with 24 points and Josh McRoberts added 12 and a career-high 16 boards. Henderson is averaging 23.6 points - 8.2 more than his season mark - on 52.4 percent shooting over the last 12 games.

Despite the Bobcats' offensive improvements in Charlotte, they'll likely be tested by the Heat, who have limited opponents to 90.8 points per game in winning 15 of 16 on the road.
