| |  | OKLAHOMA CITY: GUARDS: RUSSELL WESTBROOK can do whatever he wants inside the arc and will continue to be a shoot-first point guard . . . JAMES HARDEN will likely keep coming off the bench, but he'll also keep playing starter's minutes . . . THABO SEFOLOSHA is OKC's best perimeter defender. But his role won't become more prominent until the postseason . . . ERIC MAYNOR should be just about all the way back from his torn ACL. When healthy, he's one of the league's best backup point guards . . . DAEQUAN COOK will see limited minutes as a three-point specialist . . . REGGIE JACKSON's role will shrink to near nothing if Maynor is healthy. FORWARDS: KEVIN DURANT continues to do it all, and has done nothing but steadily improve each season . . . SERGE IBAKA is obviously an elite shot-blocker, but he continues to get lost in space. He's made some strides as a pick-and-roll defender, but that weakness is why he doesn't play 30 minutes per night . . . NICK COLLISON will continue to steal a lot of Ibaka's minutes because he defends the pick-and-roll better, and because he draws so many charges, he's almost as good in help situations . . . PERRY JONES III is an incredible athlete, but needs a year or two to learn the game . . . LAZAR HAYWARD is back as a 12th man. CENTERS: KENDRICK PERKINS will continue to start, but is a part-time player. The Thunder are often better with a small lineup. While Perkins is a bruiser he is too easy to exploit as a defender in space . . . COLE ALDRICH could be ready for a slightly bigger role off the bench . . . HASHEEM THABEET is a reclamation project. There's a sliver of long-term hope, but he won't help this year. | | CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: RAMON SESSIONS will have to adjust to a major downgrade in teammates, but he has the kind of versatile offensive skill set to be the focal point of this offense . . . The athletic GERALD HENDERSON has made strides the past two seasons. Realistically, his offensive skills are those of a No. 4 or 5 option . . . Coach Mike Dunlap is high on KEMBA WALKER, who was sometimes overwhelmed as a rookie. With a few new sets built in for him, he could thrive as a sixth man getting starter's minutes . . . BEN GORDON won't overtake Henderson, but should see big minutes as the Cats' only shooter . . . REGGIE WILLIAMS is a D-League talent . . . MATT CARROLL, in the final year of his $27 million deal, symbolizes everything that's gone wrong under Michael Jordan. FORWARDS: Drafting MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST was as much about changing the losing culture as it was adding a piece they needed. MKG's statistical output is a question mark, but he'll see big minutes as a defensive stopper and intangibles guy . . . This team is seriously lacking in the post, where they may have no choice but to play TYRUS THOMAS for significant minutes. The talented but uber-underachieving big man claims to have added 20 pounds of muscle in the offseason. If nothing else, they might showcase him in a desperate attempt to get some trade value . . . Rookie JEFFERY TAYLOR figures to make the team and has the versatility and athleticism to be a respectable second-unit guy. CENTERS: Charlotte sees BISMACK BIYOMBO as a franchise cornerstone. He can certainly rebound and block shots, but his offense is atrocious . . . BRENDAN HAYWOOD brings a veteran presence. At his age he can't go more than 15 or so minutes per night . . . BYRON MULLENS never saw a shot he didn't like. He'll get one more chance to prove he's an NBA rotation player, able to play the four or five . . . DeSAGANA DIOP is doing those things that DeSagana Diop does. |

The Oklahoma City Thunder's last game went down to the wire.
There was far less drama the last time the Northwest Division leaders faced the Charlotte Bobcats.
Oklahoma City goes for a fifth consecutive victory in this series on Friday night in Charlotte.
Looking for a sixth victory in seven games since a season-worst 0-3 stretch, the Thunder (45-16) hung on to defeat the host New York Knicks 95-94 on Thursday.
Oklahoma City moved within 2 1/2 games of idle San Antonio for the top spot in the Western Conference after Knicks guard J.R. Smith missed a turnaround jumper right before the final buzzer.
"We've been hurt on those game-winners a couple of times this year and we didn't want that to happen again," said Kevin Durant, who scored 34 points to lift his league-high average to 28.7. "So we just had to lock in and get a stop."
The Thunder, 4-3 in the second game of back-to-backs, might not face as much of a test in their stop in Charlotte, where the league-worst Bobcats (13-48) have lost 21 of 23.
Charlotte's 114-69 loss in Oklahoma City on Nov. 26 was its worst in franchise history.
All of the Thunder's starters were pulled less than five minutes into the third quarter of that contest after building a 64-24 halftime lead, the fifth-biggest in the league's shot clock era and the largest since Golden State set the record (47 points) against Sacramento on Nov. 2, 1991.
Oklahoma City has won the last four in this series by an average of 26.8 points, and Charlotte has done little of late to show it's capable of stopping that trend Friday. The Bobcats have lost by an average of 22.0 points during their eight-game skid.
They're scoring 86.4 points per game on 39.6 percent shooting during this stretch after scoring 25 second-half points in Wednesday's 99-78 loss to Brooklyn.
"It felt like a darn lid was on the rim," said Gerald Henderson, whose sprained left foot sidelined him in the earlier loss to the Thunder. "You know you can't win in this league if you can't score."
That being said, the Bobcats could be in for another rough two- to four-week stretch after learning that second-leading scorer Ramon Sessions will be out with a second degree MCL sprain in his left knee. The team said Thursday that he will not require surgery.
A rare positive for Charlotte has been the play of rookie forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who has hit 16 of 24 shots while scoring 17 points in back-to-back games.
"It's been fun to see him play that way," coach Mike Dunlap said.
Kidd-Gilchrist may be hard-pressed to continue that production if he's matched up with Durant. The All-Star forward, who had a team-high 18 points in less than 27 minutes on Nov. 26, finished with 32 in Oklahoma City's last visit to Charlotte, a 99-81 victory on Dec. 21, 2010.
The Bobcats had posted three consecutive victories with the Thunder franchise in town.
