KEY GAME INFORMATION
HOUSTON: GUARDS: Houston has gutted its roster, and this is JEREMY LIN's team now. Coach Kevin McHale will use the same pick-and-roll offense he used with Goran Dragic, and Lin should do what he did in New York a year ago . . . KEVIN MARTIN is on the trade block. As long as he's in Houston, he'll be in and out of McHale's doghouse, especially seeing that he's not in the long-term plans . . . JEREMY LAMB should push Martin for minutes early. Lamb will have some defensive issues, but he's a cagey scorer who should mesh well with Lin . . . CARLOS DELFINO replaces Chase Budinger as the team's most reliable marksman from three-point range . . . TONEY DOUGLAS' defensive ability puts him in the running for a rotation spot . . . SHAUN LIVINGSTON can give them 12 to 15 minutes a night . . . Rookie SCOTT MACHADO, an outstanding passer, will back up Lin . . . GARY FORBES will have trouble finding minutes. FORWARDS: CHANDLER PARSONS was a nice surprise a year ago. He's a fifth option offensively but does the hustle/energy thing well . . . 2011 first-rounder DONATAS MOTIEJUNAS is a skilled 7-footer who fits with Lin. Expect him to grab a starting job by midseason, but he can also play center when required . . . This might be the year PATRICK PATTERSON makes an impact. His game is limited, but he can rebound and score around the basket . . . ROYCE WHITE is a 270-pounder with point guard skills. He needs the ball in his hands though, which is why he's not a great fit with Lin in the starting lineup . . . TERRENCE JONES has a tweener skill set. At this point, he's better suited for the second unit . . . Speaking of 'tweeners, MARCUS MORRIS looks to be nowhere near contributing. CENTERS: OMER ASIK earned his reputation as a defensive stud in Chicago, and he'll get a little more offensive freedom in Houston. He is quite foul-prone though, and he'll be tested on the free-throw line early and often . . . His backup, GREG SMITH, has more fouls (17) than points (14) in his 69-minute NBA career.
CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: RAMON SESSIONS will have to adjust to a major downgrade in teammates, but he has the kind of versatile offensive skill set to be the focal point of this offense . . . The athletic GERALD HENDERSON has made strides the past two seasons. Realistically, his offensive skills are those of a No. 4 or 5 option . . . Coach Mike Dunlap is high on KEMBA WALKER, who was sometimes overwhelmed as a rookie. With a few new sets built in for him, he could thrive as a sixth man getting starter's minutes . . . BEN GORDON won't overtake Henderson, but should see big minutes as the Cats' only shooter . . . REGGIE WILLIAMS is a D-League talent . . . MATT CARROLL, in the final year of his $27 million deal, symbolizes everything that's gone wrong under Michael Jordan. FORWARDS: Drafting MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST was as much about changing the losing culture as it was adding a piece they needed. MKG's statistical output is a question mark, but he'll see big minutes as a defensive stopper and intangibles guy . . . This team is seriously lacking in the post, where they may have no choice but to play TYRUS THOMAS for significant minutes. The talented but uber-underachieving big man claims to have added 20 pounds of muscle in the offseason. If nothing else, they might showcase him in a desperate attempt to get some trade value . . . Rookie JEFFERY TAYLOR figures to make the team and has the versatility and athleticism to be a respectable second-unit guy. CENTERS: Charlotte sees BISMACK BIYOMBO as a franchise cornerstone. He can certainly rebound and block shots, but his offense is atrocious . . . BRENDAN HAYWOOD brings a veteran presence. At his age he can't go more than 15 or so minutes per night . . . BYRON MULLENS never saw a shot he didn't like. He'll get one more chance to prove he's an NBA rotation player, able to play the four or five . . . DeSAGANA DIOP is doing those things that DeSagana Diop does.

*Rockets-Bobcats Preview* =========================

By MATT BEARDMORE STATS Writer

Houston (21-21) at Charlotte (10-30), 2:00 p.m. EDT

The Houston Rockets have dropped to .500 after a disastrous, road-heavy stretch.

There's no venue that's been less intimidating for opponents than Charlotte's Time Warner Cable Arena.

Houston will try to avoid an eighth straight loss on Monday when they look to hand the Bobcats a franchise-record 15th straight home loss.

Since a 12-3 surge lifted it to seven games above the break-event point and into sixth in the Western Conference, Houston (21-21) has gone winless to fall into a tie for the eighth spot with Portland.

The Rockets are second in the league with 104.5 points per game, but they're averaging 93.3 through this slide following Saturday's 92-79 loss at Minnesota - their sixth road game during the skid.

Houston committed 20 turnovers to raise its league-high average to 16.6.

"We're so out of character right now," said coach Kevin McHale, whose team last dropped eight in a row during a 15-game skid early in the 2001-02 season. "We have turnovers, when guys are open we're not hitting them and we take the extra dribble.

"Right now, we're really in a funk and we've got to get ourselves out of it. That's the bottom line. And we will."

James Harden knows he needs to improve as he's hitting just 25.0 percent from the field and scoring 18.3 points per game - 7.5 less than his season average - during the first three stops of a trip that ends Monday.

"I'm not playing to the best of my ability," said Harden, who'll face Charlotte for the first time since pouring in 33 points for Oklahoma City in a 122-95 win March 10. "I'm not making shots, I'm not making plays. I think we're kind of in a fog right now. We've got to find a way to get out of this fog."

Visiting a Bobcats team that hasn't won at home since Nov. 21 might be the perfect solution.

Charlotte (10-30) opened its four-game homestand Saturday with a 97-93 loss to Sacramento. The Bobcats also dropped 14 straight on their home floor at the end of last season.

"We've just got to come out ready to play next time," said leading scorer Kemba Walker, who shot 6 of 17 and finished with 14 points with 10 assists on Saturday. "It's tough. We've been losing some pretty close games, and we definitely need a home win."

Facing the high-scoring Rockets seems like the last thing Charlotte needs. The Bobcats have allowed 106.2 points per game during their home skid, letting opponents shoot 41.3 percent from 3-point range.

Charlotte is 1-17 this season when its opponent hits 10 or more 3s, and Houston averages a West-best 10.0 makes from beyond the arc.

The Rockets, who have lost by an average of 9.1 during their slide, have won three straight in this series and have held Charlotte to 82.7 points per game while winning 11 of the last 13 meetings.
