|
| | | GOLDEN STATE: GUARDS: STEPHEN CURRY is this offense's engine and a stat-stuffing machine, as long as he's healthy. His ankle should be healed, but his small frame hasn't proven to be up to the rigors of the NBA . . . KLAY THOMPSON is a pure shooter who played himself into a starting job last year. He's a bit one-dimensional, but this spread, up-tempo offense is right up his alley . . . JARRETT JACK will back up both guard spots and provide some insurance for the fragile Curry . . . BRANDON RUSH is going to push for a starting job, but he's never proven to be more than a second-unit talent . . . As a rookie, CHARLES JENKINS proved worthy of a roster spot during his late-season audition. But he'll be looking at a lot of DNP-CDs as long as Curry and Jack are healthy. FORWARDS: DAVID LEE's touches will drop alongside Andrew Bogut. The Warriors seem prepared to give him major minutes despite his defensive shortcomings . . . HARRISON BARNES should push for a starting job early. He's not a great iso player, but the Warriors' offense should set him up with catch-and-score opportunities . . . CARL LANDRY is active around the basket and should do some damage over 20 MPG . . . RICHARD JEFFERSON is going to be in a mentor role until his contract expires in two years . . . JEREMY TYLER is young and a borderline usable big off the bench . . . Second-rounder DRAYMOND GREEN isn't an athlete but does a bit of everything. He figures to have a limited role as a rookie. CENTERS: His fractured ankle is not quite 100 percent, but ANDREW BOGUT hopes to be healed enough when the season starts to be the centerpiece of the frontcourt. He can rebound and defend, and he'll get his share of easy scoring opportunities with so many shooters spreading the floor . . . The Warriors seem content to let ANDRIS BIEDRINS rot on the bench . . . Rookie FESTUS EZELI is too raw offensively to see significant minutes. | | CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: RAMON SESSIONS will have to adjust to a major downgrade in teammates, but he has the kind of versatile offensive skill set to be the focal point of this offense . . . The athletic GERALD HENDERSON has made strides the past two seasons. Realistically, his offensive skills are those of a No. 4 or 5 option . . . Coach Mike Dunlap is high on KEMBA WALKER, who was sometimes overwhelmed as a rookie. With a few new sets built in for him, he could thrive as a sixth man getting starter's minutes . . . BEN GORDON won't overtake Henderson, but should see big minutes as the Cats' only shooter . . . REGGIE WILLIAMS is a D-League talent . . . MATT CARROLL, in the final year of his $27 million deal, symbolizes everything that's gone wrong under Michael Jordan. FORWARDS: Drafting MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST was as much about changing the losing culture as it was adding a piece they needed. MKG's statistical output is a question mark, but he'll see big minutes as a defensive stopper and intangibles guy . . . This team is seriously lacking in the post, where they may have no choice but to play TYRUS THOMAS for significant minutes. The talented but uber-underachieving big man claims to have added 20 pounds of muscle in the offseason. If nothing else, they might showcase him in a desperate attempt to get some trade value . . . Rookie JEFFERY TAYLOR figures to make the team and has the versatility and athleticism to be a respectable second-unit guy. CENTERS: Charlotte sees BISMACK BIYOMBO as a franchise cornerstone. He can certainly rebound and block shots, but his offense is atrocious . . . BRENDAN HAYWOOD brings a veteran presence. At his age he can't go more than 15 or so minutes per night . . . BYRON MULLENS never saw a shot he didn't like. He'll get one more chance to prove he's an NBA rotation player, able to play the four or five . . . DeSAGANA DIOP is doing those things that DeSagana Diop does. |

*Warriors-Bobcats Preview* ==========================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Golden State (13-7) at Charlotte (7-12), 7:00 p.m. EDT
Along with David Lee, Stephen Curry has played a pivotal role in the Golden State Warriors' superb start to their longest road trip of the season.
When he returns to a familiar place Monday night, Curry will try to help the Warriors accomplish a rare feat and end their recent woes against the struggling Charlotte Bobcats.
After a 3-4 start to the season, Golden State (13-7) has found its stride with 10 victories in its past 13 contests, and that winning hasn't stopped so far on a seven-game trip against Eastern Conference foes.
The Warriors are 3-0 on that trek to tie their longest overall win streak of the season. They defeated Washington 101-97 in their latest stop Saturday.
Lee, averaging a team-best 24.7 points and 14.3 rebounds during the trip, led the way with 24 points and 17 boards. Klay Thompson had 23 points and Curry scored 22 for his seventh consecutive game with at least 20.
Curry has averaged 24.5 points on 50.7 percent shooting in four games against Charlotte, making 14 of 22 from 3-point range. The Warriors guard starred at Charlotte Christian High School and nearby Davidson University.
His father, Dell Curry, spent 10 seasons with the Charlotte Hornets and is now a Bobcats broadcaster.
He'll be watching as the Warriors try to start 4-0 on a road trip for the first time since sweeping a five-gamer Oct. 29-Nov. 4, 1978. They're also seeking to clinch their first winning record on a road trip of seven games or longer since going 4-3 from Dec. 7-15, 1970.
Golden State is are 7-4 on the road after going 37-119 outside of Oakland over the previous four seasons.
"We're trying to change the culture and overcome a lot of things that we're not used to," Curry said. "You've got to be able to perform at a high level night-in and night-out on the road and we're playing well."
The Warriors appear to have a good chance to keep rolling with Charlotte (7-12) having dropped seven in a row overall and five straight at home. Golden State, though, has dropped five of the last six meetings and was one of the few teams to lose to the 7-59 Bobcats last season.
Curry missed that 112-100 defeat in Charlotte on Jan. 14 because of an ankle injury. Lee had a team-best 24 points and 16 rebounds, but only one other Warriors player scored more than 12.
Gerald Henderson led the way for Charlotte with 26 points. Kemba Walker scored a season-high 23 and Byron Mullens added 20.
The Bobcats' recent woes have mainly been on defense. They've given up an average of 110.0 points during their skid and finished four shy of matching a franchise record for points allowed Saturday in a 132-102 loss to San Antonio.
The Spurs made a franchise-record 19 3-pointers and had seven players score in double figures. Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap benched Mullens and Brendan Haywood at the start of the game, but replacements Bismack Biyombo and DeSagana Diop totaled four points.
"It was to let everybody know that there is some live chairs," Dunlap said. "When you're going through this process it's important to live to the standard of how you want guys to play, and for us that's (playing) extremely hard."
