|
| | | MILWAUKEE: GUARDS: BRANDON JENNINGS benefitted from the arrival of Monta Ellis last year. He has the offense and system to thrive, and now needs to prove he can be efficient enough to be a star . . . MONTA ELLIS played second fiddle to Jennings last year, and really struggled to shoot the ball. The Bucks now play the kind of tempo he likes, but he'll have to adjust to playing off the ball more often . . . BENO UDRIH won't see a ton of action off the bench considering Jennings and Ellis play so many minutes. If a starter gets hurt, he could step in and hit a lot of threes . . . Second-rounder DORON LAMB has some upside as a future sixth man, but figures to ride the bench this year once his torn elbow ligament heals. FORWARDS: ERSAN ILYASOVA should finally get some respect from Skiles after starring down the stretch last year . . . MIKE DUNLEAVY re-emerged as a legitimate three-point threat, though he doesn't do much else . . . DREW GOODEN's role should shrink with Ilyasova stepping up and Sam Dalembert coming in . . . LUC RICHARD MBAH a MOUTE is coming off knee surgery, but he's improving as a rebounder and can play both forward spots off the bench . . . Rookie JOHN HENSON is a defensive stud and does enough as a screener to get decent minutes early . . . TOBIAS HARRIS was a Summer League star, but he's too much of a 'tweener to thrive in the NBA . . . EKPE UDOH provides defense and rebounding off the bench . . . LARRY SANDERS has potential, but this frontcourt is too crowded for him to make an impact. CENTERS: SAM DALEMBERT fell in and out of favor in Houston, but he's exactly what the Bucksneed as a defensive presence in the paint. Milwaukee has numerous players who can man the five in spots (Ekpe Udoh, Drew Gooden), but Dalembert is by far their best defensive option and should see big minutes . . . JOEL PRZYBILLA signed on in August to provide back-end depth on the pine. | | CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: RAMON SESSIONS will have to adjust to a major downgrade in teammates, but he has the kind of versatile offensive skill set to be the focal point of this offense . . . The athletic GERALD HENDERSON has made strides the past two seasons. Realistically, his offensive skills are those of a No. 4 or 5 option . . . Coach Mike Dunlap is high on KEMBA WALKER, who was sometimes overwhelmed as a rookie. With a few new sets built in for him, he could thrive as a sixth man getting starter's minutes . . . BEN GORDON won't overtake Henderson, but should see big minutes as the Cats' only shooter . . . REGGIE WILLIAMS is a D-League talent . . . MATT CARROLL, in the final year of his $27 million deal, symbolizes everything that's gone wrong under Michael Jordan. FORWARDS: Drafting MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST was as much about changing the losing culture as it was adding a piece they needed. MKG's statistical output is a question mark, but he'll see big minutes as a defensive stopper and intangibles guy . . . This team is seriously lacking in the post, where they may have no choice but to play TYRUS THOMAS for significant minutes. The talented but uber-underachieving big man claims to have added 20 pounds of muscle in the offseason. If nothing else, they might showcase him in a desperate attempt to get some trade value . . . Rookie JEFFERY TAYLOR figures to make the team and has the versatility and athleticism to be a respectable second-unit guy. CENTERS: Charlotte sees BISMACK BIYOMBO as a franchise cornerstone. He can certainly rebound and block shots, but his offense is atrocious . . . BRENDAN HAYWOOD brings a veteran presence. At his age he can't go more than 15 or so minutes per night . . . BYRON MULLENS never saw a shot he didn't like. He'll get one more chance to prove he's an NBA rotation player, able to play the four or five . . . DeSAGANA DIOP is doing those things that DeSagana Diop does. |

*Bucks-Bobcats Preview* =======================
By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer
Milwaukee (6-2) at Charlotte (4-4), 7:00 p.m. EDT
A matchup between the Milwaukee Bucks and Charlotte Bobcats looks a lot more intriguing than it did a year ago.
Two of the league's more surprising teams go head to head on Monday night as the Bucks visit the Bobcats looking for their first 4-0 road start in 11 years.
These clubs were a combined 56 games under .500 last season, with Charlotte finishing an all-time worst 7-59.
The Bucks (6-2) have given themselves an early lead in the Central Division with their best start since going 9-1 in 2001-02 - also the last time they won their first four away from Milwaukee. They hit a season-high 13 3-pointers Saturday in a 117-113 victory over New Orleans.
"We like where we're at record wise," said Mike Dunleavy, who scored 17 points off the bench. "We've got some things to shore up."
Milwaukee struggled to stop New Orleans, as the Hornets shot 53.2 percent from the floor - the best clip the Bucks have allowed. But six Milwaukee players scored in double figures, and Monta Ellis had six of his team high-tying 22 points in the final two minutes.
Despite the result, coach Scott Skiles called his team's defense "embarrassing."
"You want to stop the other team," Dunleavy said. "You want to keep them below 90 points. So when these games get high scoring, it's a little dangerous. You never know what could happen down the stretch."
The Bobcats (4-4) had their three-game winning streak snapped Saturday in a 94-87 home loss to the NBA-best Grizzlies. They've still won as many games as they won in last season's final 37 games.
Charlotte trailed by as many as 17 in the fourth quarter, but made it competitive as Kemba Walker scored 11 consecutive points. The Bobcats pulled to within five on several occasions.
"That's who we are and that's how we are going to be all season hopefully," said Walker, who is averaging a team-best 18.8 points. "When we are down, we are not going to put our heads down. We are going to try our best to close the game out and try to keep pushing. We don't want to give up."
Besides career-high scoring averages from Ramon Sessions (15.8) and Byron Mullens (12.1), pesky defense has also helped key Charlotte's improvement. The Bobcats have held their last four opponents to 36.7 percent shooting and 25.3 percent from beyond the arc after allowing 49.6 percent and 43.0 from long distance in their first four contests.
Charlotte dropped two of three to the Bucks last season, though Mullens scored a career-high 31 in a 95-90 loss at Milwaukee on April 6.
The Bobcats need to hope Walker is more disciplined in his shot selection against the Bucks this season. He averaged 14.7 points but shot 27.1 percent (13 of 48) in this series in 2011-12.
