KEY GAME INFORMATION
ORLANDO: LAST SEASON: 42-40, lost 4-1 in first round to Toronto
COACH: Steve Clifford (second season with Magic; seventh season overall, 238-254).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Evan Fournier (15.1 ppg), G D.J. Augustin (11.7), F Aaron Gordon (16.0), F Jonathan Isaac (9.6), C Nikola Vucevic (20.8).
KEY LOSSES: None.
KEY ADDITIONS: F Al-Farouq Aminu, G Markelle Fultz (acquired in February from Philadelphia but didn't play).
PLAYERS TO WATCH: There isn't a lot of mystery to the Magic entering this season, since they bring back basically the same team and will be adding a former No. 1 overall pick in Fultz who has worked for months to fix his shoulder and shooting issues. Vucevic is coming off a season where he set career-bests in points, rebounds and assists per game. When Gordon scored big, the Magic were really good; they went 16-8 in the 24 games where Gordon reached the 20-point mark. Terrence Ross is basically a sixth starter for Orlando, needing only 26.5 minutes per game to average 15.1 points last season in an instant-offense role coming off the bench.
OUTLOOK: The Magic improved by 17 wins last season and reached the playoffs for the first time since 2012, doing all that without the burden of expectation. They won't have that same luxury this year, not after bringing back virtually every part of a team that didn't just get into the playoffs but did so by going 22-9 down the stretch of the regular season. Getting to the foul line more would be a major help, after the Magic ranked last in free throws made and free throws attempted last season. The biggest challenge for Clifford may be finding ways for his team to replicate the same get-into-the-playoffs hunger it had a year ago.
BROOKLYN: LAST SEASON: 42-40, lost in the first round of the playoffs.
COACH: Kenny Atkinson (fourth season).
PROJECTED STARTING FIVE: G Kyrie Irving (23.8 ppg), G Caris LeVert (13.7 ppg), F Joe Harris (13.7 ppg), F Taurean Prince (13.5 ppg), C Jarrett Allen (10.9 ppg).
KEY LOSSES: G D'Angelo Russell, F DeMarre Carroll, F Jared Dudley, F/C Ed Davis, G Allen Crabbe, G Shabazz Napier, F Rondae Hollis-Jefferson
KEY ADDITIONS: F Kevin Durant, G Irving, C DeAndre Jordan, F Prince, F Wilson Chandler, G/F David Nwaba, G/F Garrett Temple PLAYER TO WATCH: Irving. An undeniable All-Star talent who now has to show he has the temperament to handle New York. He asked to be traded from Cleveland, then changed his mind after originally saying he planned to remain in Boston, where the Celtics were a disappointment last season and he acknowledged doing a poor job leading the team. He grew up in New Jersey and wanted to come back home, and now he has to perform.
OUTLOOK: The Nets don't expect Durant to play this season, so they remain a bit weak at the forward spot compared to the top teams in the Eastern Conference. That means it's possible they won't even improve off last season's surprising sixth-place finish. But even if they don't, they appear well set for the future.
PREVIEW
Short-handed Nets set for opener vs. Magic

The Brooklyn Nets' firing of Kenny Atkinson on March 7 appeared to be one of the biggest surprises of the NBA season. Four days later, the idea a coaching change could provide a seismic shock was forever rendered quaint when the NBA suspended the season after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for COVID-19.

The Nets will still be dealing with the reverberations from the news that shut sports down when they face the Orlando Magic on Friday afternoon, as each team begins the NBA's restart at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando.

Both teams went 1-2 in three exhibition games in Orlando. The Nets finished their schedule by falling to the Utah Jazz 112-107 on Monday, the same night the Magic ended on a victorious note with a 114-110 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

Both teams also won their pre-shutdown finales on the road back on March 10, when the Nets edged the Los Angeles Lakers, 104-102 in their second game with Jacque Vaughn at the helm, and the Magic beat the Memphis Grizzlies, 120-115.

Days later, the Nets became one of the first teams most impacted by the coronavirus. Brooklyn announced March 17 that four players -- including forward Kevin Durant, who is sitting out the season as he recovers from a torn Achilles -- tested positive.

Four more players -- guard Spencer Dinwiddie, forwards Michael Beasley and Taurean Prince and center DeAndre Jordan -- all tested positive in late June or early July. The quartet will sit out the restart, along with Durant and star guard Kyrie Irving (shoulder). The Nets were so starved for additional players that Jamal Crawford, who sat out the regular season and turned 40 in March, was signed for depth on July 9.

All this for a team that enters the restart in a precarious playoff position. The Nets (30-34) are in seventh place in the Eastern Conference, a half-game ahead of the Magic (30-35), who are 5 1/2 games ahead of the ninth-place Washington Wizards (24-40).

The top seven teams in each conference will be guaranteed a playoff spot. The eighth-place team would clinch a spot if it finishes at least four games ahead of the ninth-place team. Otherwise, a two-game mini-series would be played to determine the last playoff squad.

After facing the Magic, the Nets will battle the Wizards on Sunday.

"These first two games are huge," Nets forward Joe Harris said. "I think the scrimmages were great to work over a lot of new stuff, bring in some new guys that are new to the organization, get familiar with one another. We're all ready to go, we're ready to compete and we realize how important these first two games are."

While the Nets lost multiple players during the shutdown, the Magic will return to action with more depth than they had in March. Forward Jonathan Isaac, who hadn't played since suffering a left knee injury Jan. 1, returned to the court Monday and finished with 13 points and seven rebounds in seven minutes against the Nuggets.

He'll join a core that features Orlando's leading scorer and rebounder, Nikola Vucevic, who had 36 double-doubles in the 54 games before the shutdown.

"It's really fun to be back out there," Isaac said. "I think one of the biggest parts about just getting back out there was just being with my teammates and being able to put my jersey on and kind of just having it come full circle with all the work that's been put in."

The Magic and Nets will meet again on Aug. 11.
