KEY GAME INFORMATION
CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: LANCE STEPHENSON started chucking and padding stats after missing the All-Star team last season, fueling Indiana's collapse. He's a potentially solid role player, but if he tries to be the alpha for the Hornets, it could be a long season . . . KEMBA WALKER has become a solid playmaker, though he'll lose some touches while playing alongside Stephenson . . . The Hornets seem to be done with GERALD HENDERSON, who will stay in the rotation, but see a reduced role with all the Hornets' offseason acquisitions . . . GARY NEAL can play both guard spots as a high-scoring sixth man . . . P.J. HAIRSTON needs to stay out of trouble off the court if he's to have any chance of becoming a three-point specialist off the bench . . . BRIAN ROBERTS steps in as a No. 3 point guard. FORWARDS: Charlotte reloaded in the frontcourt, but MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST will likely claim a starting job due to his defense. It's probably time to accept that MKG will never have much of an offensive game . . . CODY ZELLER will have every opportunity to grab a starting job early on. Unfortunately, his inability to score in traffic limits his effectiveness . . . MARVIN WILLIAMS will see major minutes at both forward spots. He's a capable defender who has added a three-point shot to his repertoire . . . He's still a teenager, so he may not carve out major minutes this year, but NOAH VONLEH has by far the most upside among their 4's and 5's. He's a potentially elite stretch-4 . . . JEFF TAYLOR's Achilles is close to 100 percent. He has a shot to re-claim a rotation spot. CENTERS: AL JEFFERSON is a flawed player, but he gives Charlotte exactly what the team is looking for: A low-post threat on the offensive end of the court. Like Walker, he'll also suffer a bit with Stephenson coming in, but he's still the focal point of this offense . . . He's not quite a bust because he can defend, but BISMACK BIYOMBO hasn't shown any semblance of an offensive game.
BROOKLYN: GUARDS: Even after Paul Pierce came to Brooklyn, JOE JOHNSON remained the clear-cut No. 1 option in Brooklyn. Their offense figures to feature Johnson backing down defenders frequently again this year . . . DERON WILLIAMS seems to be deteriorating rapidly, struggling to stay healthy and losing confidence . . . JARRETT JACK figures to take Shaun Livingston's old role, playing alongside Williams often to take ball-handling duties off his plate . . . ALAN ANDERSON will see time at both wing spots as a defensive specialist who shoots some corner threes . . . SERGEY KARASEV has some long-term upside, but will do little this year . . . MARQUIS TEAGUE figures to have the edge on MARKEL BROWN for the No. 3 PG job. FORWARDS: With Paul Pierce gone, MIRZA TELETOVIC has a chance to take on a bigger role. He held his own defensively last year and provides another deep threat to space the floor . . . There's no telling what, if anything, they'll get out of ANDREI KIRILENKO this season. He seems to be at a point in his career when he's just not going to be able to stay healthy . . . BOJAN BOGDANOVIC should give Brooklyn some additional offensive firepower off the bench. He'll likely be a regular in the rotation by midseason . . . KEVIN GARNETT figures to play a bit more at the 4 alongside Brook Lopez, but there's pretty much no gas left in the tank for this 38-year-old player . . . Second-round pick CORY JEFFERSON is likely ticketed for the D-League. CENTERS: The Nets desperately need a healthy BROOK LOPEZ if they're going to win the Atlantic Division, but they'll have to monitor his minutes closely after another season lost to injury . . . With Lopez healthy, MASON PLUMLEE will resume his natural role as an energy guy off the bench.

*Hornets-Nets Preview* ======================

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer

Charlotte (24-33) at Brooklyn (25-33), 7:30 p.m. EDT

The Brooklyn Nets and Charlotte Hornets share the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, but they're far from alone in the crowded race.

However, history favors the Nets in taking a slight advantage.

After beating one of the NBA's top teams in dramatic fashion, the Nets look to continue their dominance of the Hornets on Wednesday night at Barclays Center.

Brooklyn (25-33) and Charlotte (25-33) are one-half game back of Miami for seventh in the East, but there are several other teams in close pursuit. Indiana is one-half-game behind the Nets and Hornets, while Boston is lurking two games back with Detroit 2 1/2.

Brooklyn can gain sole possession of eighth with a win, which would be its 11th in the past 13 meetings and sixth in a row at home against the Hornets.

The Nets had little trouble at Charlotte on Dec. 13, hitting a season-best 16 of 23 3-pointers en route to a 114-87 victory.

They should also have some confidence after opening this five-game homestand with a 110-108 win over Golden State after Jarrett Jack connected on the go-ahead jumper with 1.1 seconds left. The guard's clutch shot came after Stephen Curry's 18 points in the fourth quarter rallied the Warriors to a tie in the final seconds.

"It's all about being ready," said Jack, who had nine points off the bench. "I didn't have a huge game shooting the ball. I think chasing Steph around probably had a big, big reason to do with that. But it's always staying ready."

Deron Williams had 18 points and 10 assists in Brooklyn's win in December, and is averaging 21.2 points in the last six at home. The guard enters this one after totaling 45 points while making half of his 32 attempts from the field in two games - both wins.

Charlotte has followed a five-game slide by winning three of four while shooting 47.7 percent from the field. The Hornets connected on 49.4 percent in a 104-103 victory over the Lakers on Tuesday.

The acquisition of Mo Williams is paying dividends for Charlotte, which has split six games since landing him in a deal with Minnesota last month. He's totaled 43 points and 24 assists in the past two games, and is averaging 22.8 and 8.0 since joining the Hornets.

Al Jefferson, who had 21 points and 16 rebounds Tuesday, credited Williams' shooting and passing with his success.

"That's one of the things I love about him being here," Jefferson said of Williams, a friend he knows from growing up in Mississippi. "When the game gets tight, people are going to double me. When you have a chance to kick it out to a knockdown shooter, it takes the pressure off me.

"I've played with him before and we already had a good understanding of each other. So I know how to make an easy pass for him."

Jefferson is looking for that familiarity to help him do better than the eight points and five rebounds he managed against Brooklyn in December. He was averaging 20.4 points over the previous 10 meetings.
