|
| | | DETROIT: GUARDS: New head coach Stan Van Gundy's system is perfect for BRANDON JENNINGS, as it is heavy on high pick-and-rolls, which is where Jennings is most dangerous. He'll never be an efficient scorer . . . Detroit gave a good chunk of change to JODIE MEEKS, so he's likely to start as a spot-up shooter when he returns from a back injury in January . . . A Tskitishvili Award-winner as one of the stars of Summer League, KENTAVIOUS CALDWELL-POPE has a shot to carve out sixth-man minutes . . . After a mini-breakout with Chicago, D.J. AUGUSTIN is the insurance policy behind Jennings. He's also a great fit for Van Gundy's system . . . WILL BYNUM has been downright solid with the second unit, but he'll have to play his way back into the rotation . . . This is a redshirt season for SPENCER DINWIDDIE as he comes back from a torn ACL. FORWARDS: They'll keep shopping JOSH SMITH, who is miscast as a 3 on this roster . . . KYLE SINGLER will continue to see solid part-time minutes. He can play both wing spots and has become a good enough threat on corner threes . . . CARON BUTLER joins a crowded frontcourt. He's evolved into a three-point specialist in the latter part of his career . . . Van Gundy is a JONAS JEREBKO believer. The stretch-4 fell out of favor the past two seasons, but he has a chance to earn a big role off the bench . . . CARTIER MARTIN gives them another athletic wing who can shoot the three . . . Euro import LUIGI DATOME was a big disappointment last season. He'll have a tough time breaking into this rotation . . . TONY MITCHELL might be looking at another year in the D-League . . . GREG MONROE is an everyday double-double threat. He'll fill the stat sheet as he plays for a contract for next season. CENTERS: ANDRE DRUMMOND is a monster on the boards with Defensive Player of the Year upside once he improves in space. Offensively, he can dunk but not much else . . . AARON GRAY is here to fill out the roster once he's cleared to return from his heart problems. | | BROOKLYN: GUARDS: Even after Paul Pierce came to Brooklyn, JOE JOHNSON remained the clear-cut No. 1 option in Brooklyn. Their offense figures to feature Johnson backing down defenders frequently again this year . . . DERON WILLIAMS seems to be deteriorating rapidly, struggling to stay healthy and losing confidence . . . JARRETT JACK figures to take Shaun Livingston's old role, playing alongside Williams often to take ball-handling duties off his plate . . . ALAN ANDERSON will see time at both wing spots as a defensive specialist who shoots some corner threes . . . SERGEY KARASEV has some long-term upside, but will do little this year . . . MARQUIS TEAGUE figures to have the edge on MARKEL BROWN for the No. 3 PG job. FORWARDS: With Paul Pierce gone, MIRZA TELETOVIC has a chance to take on a bigger role. He held his own defensively last year and provides another deep threat to space the floor . . . There's no telling what, if anything, they'll get out of ANDREI KIRILENKO this season. He seems to be at a point in his career when he's just not going to be able to stay healthy . . . BOJAN BOGDANOVIC should give Brooklyn some additional offensive firepower off the bench. He'll likely be a regular in the rotation by midseason . . . KEVIN GARNETT figures to play a bit more at the 4 alongside Brook Lopez, but there's pretty much no gas left in the tank for this 38-year-old player . . . Second-round pick CORY JEFFERSON is likely ticketed for the D-League. CENTERS: The Nets desperately need a healthy BROOK LOPEZ if they're going to win the Atlantic Division, but they'll have to monitor his minutes closely after another season lost to injury . . . With Lopez healthy, MASON PLUMLEE will resume his natural role as an energy guy off the bench. |

*Pistons-Nets Preview* ======================
By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer
Detroit (5-22) at Brooklyn (10-15), 6:00 p.m. EDT
The struggling Brooklyn Nets have had a rough go without All-Star center Brook Lopez, and they could be in for an even bumpier road ahead without another key piece.
Deron Williams is listed as doubtful heading into Sunday's home matchup against the last-place Detroit Pistons.
Williams limped off the court in the second quarter of Friday's 95-91 loss at Cleveland with a strained right calf and didn't return. The three-time All-Star, averaging 15.6 points and a team-high 6.8 assists, has appeared in all 25 games for Brooklyn (10-15) after missing 18 last season due to ankle issues.
Williams' absence could prove especially costly for a Nets team that's averaged 89.5 points in dropping three straight and six of eight. Brooklyn has played its last seven games without Lopez, who has already been ruled out for Sunday.
The Nets figure to lean on Joe Johnson all the more if Williams can't go. The 14-year veteran finished with 26 points against the Cavaliers for his second-highest mark this season, but Brooklyn was outscored 24-8 at the foul line.
"We have to stop fouling," coach Lionel Hollins said. "It's always the little things. ... When you break it down into the little parts, you see it's the little things that haunt you."
Johnson went off for 34 points in a 102-90 victory at Detroit on Nov. 1 in Brooklyn's second game of the season. Kevin Garnett added season highs of 18 points and 14 rebounds as the Nets improved to 6-3 in the series since 2012-13.
The Pistons (5-22) are still trying to right the ship after losing three straight and 16 of 18. Detroit is one of the NBA's lowest scoring teams with 94.0 points per game and ranks 29th with a free-throw percentage of 69.7.
"We don't expect things to come overnight," center Andre Drummond said. "Nobody likes to lose. We're going to continue to work hard each and every night. We're just going to keep fighting."
The Pistons' woes continued with Friday's 110-100 loss to Toronto. Brandon Jennings broke out of his slump with 22 points and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 18, but Detroit gave up a season-high 60 in the paint.
"The story of this game is that we showed absolutely no defensive will or resolve whatsoever," coach Stan Van Gundy said. "We didn't show any inclination to stop them. Our last three games have been against good teams, and it is very accurate to say our defense has been exposed."
The Pistons have allowed a combined 340 points during their skid for their worst three-game stretch this season.
Jennings had been limited to an average of 5.8 points on 24.6 percent from the floor over an eight-game stretch before shooting 8 of 18 against the Raptors. He's scored a combined 23 points on 5-of-21 shooting in his last two visits to Brooklyn.
Drummond is averaging 18.8 points on 67.4 percent shooting and 15.3 boards over a four-game stretch against the Nets. He'll try to help contain fellow center Mason Plumlee, who's averaging 17.4 points on 64.3 percent shooting in his last five games for Brooklyn.
Plumlee is shooting an NBA-worst 43.0 percent at the foul line, just ahead of Drummond's mark of 44.9. Pistons forward Josh Smith has also struggled, shooting 46.7 percent.
